    Italian writer-director, a former law student. Began as assistant to Augusto Genina and became best known for a series of light sentimental comedies in the 1930's, often starring a young Vittorio De Sica. His films (set in working class or lower middle class milieus) were commercially very popular, appealing especially to mainstream viewers.
