- Paul Calinescu was born on August 23, 1902 in Galati, Covurlui, Romania. He was a director and writer, known for Pe raspunderea mea (1956), Immortelle des neiges (1946) and Titanic vals (1965). He died on March 25, 2000 in Bucharest, Romania.
- Romanian film maker, a graduate of the University of Bucharest. He directed his country's first documentary România (1934). The ethnographic film Tara Motilor (1939) ("The Land of the Motzi") won the Best Documentary Prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1939.
