10 Horror Movies From The 1990s That Unintentionally Became Hilarious Cult Classics
Image
The 1990s was a fun decade for the horror genre, with many productions turning into unintentionally hilarious films years later. The '80s saw a peak in the horror genre, and by the time the '90s had rolled around, far less inspired films were being released. The '90s are considered a transition period in the horror genre, allowing filmmakers to play around and experiment, which ultimately produced a lot of films that were less than innovative.

Many of these films are considered rip-offs of the decades' accomplished releases, or they were simply unable to concoct a unique and compelling story of their own. Though the critical and commercial response to these films wasn't the best at the time of their original release, they went on to garner a cult following, being appreciated for their unintended campy tones. Films like Ticks, The Dentist, and Troll 2 have a pleasant...

February Lineup from Severin Films Includes ‘Hot Spur,’ ‘Scavengers’ and Time Travel Mind Bender ‘Lola’
Image
The year’s shortest month gets the biggest bang as Severin Films today announced their February 27th releases featuring uncensored 4K restorations of the infamous 1960’s western ‘roughies’ from the depraved minds of exploitation legends Bob Cresse and Lee Frost, Hot Spur and Scavengers.

‘“The Kings of esoteric boutique companies” (Video WatchBlog) are also proud to release – because Severin co-founder/president David Gregory considers it one of the best films he saw as a jury member at the FrightFest and Sitges Film Festivals – the North American disc premiere of director/co-writer Andrew Legge’s time-travel mind-bender, Lola.

Previous limited edition title Spider Labyrinth also enters wide release.

Here’s everything you need to know about Severin’s February 2024 lineup…

Hot Spur

Having struck gold with shockumentaries like Ecco and Mondo Bizarro, producer Bob Cresse and writer/director Lee Frost applied their distinctive sleaze aesthetic to a revenge western they advertised as “91 minutes of Freudian fury!

Child’s Play (1988) vs. Dolly Dearest (1991) – Horror Movie Rip-Off
Image
The episode of Horror Movie Rip-Off covering Child’s Play and Dolly Dearest was Written by Paul Bookstaber, Narrated by Ryan Cultrera, Edited by Ryan Cultrera, Produced by John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Intro

Dolls, dolls, and more dolls! The horror genre is an ever-twisting blade that goes in deep when a good, and original concept is copied, replicated, and beaten over the head until it’s nothing more than a watered-down caricature. They say imitation is the biggest form of flattery, but are we so sure about that? Today I have an interesting Horror Movie Rip-off between two evil entities covered in rubber that cherish their higher gods and massacring anyone and everyone in their path. One that spawned countless sequels, tv shows, a cemented horror legacy, and worldwide notoriety, while the other I may have glanced at on the racks of my local blockbuster back in the day.

I, the Jury (1953) 4K + 3-D
Image
Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer hit the big screen early in the 3-D craze, in a much tamed-down adaptation. The camera legend John Alton handled the lighting and likely called the shots on the camera setups as well. As a detective noir it’s definitely flat-footed, with a bum script, weak direction and a miscast Biff Elliot as the vengeful tough-guy hero. But compensating are the seductive Dran Hamilton, Margaret Sheridan and especially Peggie Castle — the key ‘dame’ in the pulp fiction finale. The United Artists release has been mostly Mia for decades, and this release presents it three ways: flat in both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray, plus a beautiful restored 3-D Blu-ray encoding.

The Qualifiers 4 episode of “America’s Got Talent” aired Tuesday, August 30 on NBC with 11 acts performing live on the big stage. One of those acts was ventriloquist Jack Williams. A year ago he was working a retail job and struggling to pay his rent, which is when he decided to go on social media. Who’s performing tonight on “America’s Got Talent“? The Season 17 live shows continue August 30 on NBC with the Qualifiers 4 group. Among this week’s contenders are metal singer Harper, a 10-year-old girl with an eye-popping voice, and ventriloquist Jack Williams, who is angling to join the winners list alongside Darci Lynne Farmer and Terry Fator. Remember, this year the live shows have gotten a major facelift. Gone are the days of Quarter-Finals followed by Semi-Finals. Instead, there will only be five Qualifiers rounds, with two out of 11 acts advancing from each group — yes, that means nine acts will go home each week.

This lineup notably includes Heidi Klum‘s Golden Buzzer act Lily Meola, a 27-year-old singer from Hawaii who previously sang an original song about losing her mother. So far on Season 17, Golden Buzzer acts have had a noticeable advantage when it comes to America’s votes. Indeed, all...

‘America’s Got Talent’: Is Sofia Vergara really a ventriloquist?
Image
Ever since Sofia Vergara became a judge on “America’s Got Talent” in 2020, there have been several remarks about her being a ventriloquist — or, as she adorably pronounces it, “ventriquolist.” But is Sofia Vergara really a ventriloquist? To answer that question, we need to go back to her former job as one of the stars of “Modern Family.”

During her 11-year run on the ABC family comedy, the Colombian-American actress earned four Emmy nominations for playing Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, the wife of Jay (Ed O’Neill) and the mother of Manny (Rico Rodriguez). Obviously, over the span of 250 episodes, the show’s characters would occasionally venture outside of their normal comfort zones and do wild things for entertainment purposes, and one such story line involved Gloria becoming, yep, a ventriloquist.

Dolly Dearest Comes to Blu-ray for the First Time Ever from Vinegar Syndrome
Ed Gale in Dolly Dearest (1991)
90s horror VHS maniacs, rejoice! The bonkers straight-to-video, Dolly Dearest is coming to blu-ray for the very first time, thanks to Vinegar Symdrome. The sole horror feature directed by veteran exploitation crew-woman and actress, Maria Lease, and produced by Dan Cady (Grave of the Vampire), Dolly Dearest, takes a thematic nod from Child's Play while upping the weirdness. Starring Denise Crosby (Pet Sematary), Sam Bottoms (Apocalypse Now), and featuring a memorable supporting performance from Rip Torn (Men in Black), Vinegar Syndrome brings this early 90s cult favorite to Blu-ray for the very first time, in a brand new 2K restoration.

In Dolly Dearest, American family Elliot and Marilyn Wade, along with their young children Jessica and Jimmy, have just relocated to Mexico, where Elliot has taken over a doll factory. As they settle into their fresh surroundings, Jessica forms a special bond with her new doll, spending hours with it in her large playhouse.

All the Sins of Sodom / Vibrations
What is this? Sex-oriented movies with believable psychodramatics, made by a committed artist with taste and talent? Joe Sarno’s pictures still aren’t suitable for grandma, but he’s way, way above the exploitation grindhouse competition of his day. His ’60s B&W pictures are not only watchable, they’re involving. Restored to pre-print condition, they’re — how can I best put this? — artistically respectable.
