Supergirl's Dreamer is Teased as DC's Next Top Sorcerer
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Lazarus Planet: Omega #1After making her DC Universe debut last summer, Dreamer is quickly becoming one of the most important characters in the Dcu. Though she began as a supporting character in the Supergirl television program, Dreamer is now a DC Comics hero in her own right, and the publisher is teasing the major impact she might have in the Dcu's magical corners.

DC Comics teases Dreamer's continued importance in Lazarus Planet: Omega #1 by Mark Waid, Riccardo Federici, Mike Perkins, Brad Anderson, and Steve Wands. This one-shot issue is the action-packed conclusion to the Lazarus Planet event, and it follows Damian Wayne as he primarily observes the showdown between the Justice League, DC's magic users, and their enemy, King Fire Bull.

The "good guys" triumph, of course, and the aftermath promises more Lazarus-induced chaos, as both magic and the Dcu at large have been seriously changed.

Superman Unleashes the Ultimate Insult Against His Lifelong Nemesis
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Action Comics #1050!The alien hero Superman and billionaire villain Lex Luthor have been rivals for almost a hundred years, maintaining a rivalry every bit as iconic as Batman and the Joker. But recently, Lex Luthor learned Superman's true feelings towards him, and this revelation left him shaken to his core.

Readers got to see exactly what Superman thinks about Lex Luthor in Action Comics #1050 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Tom Taylor, Joshua Williamson, Mike Perkins, Clayton Henry, and Nick Dragotta. While Lex Luthor is preparing for Project Blackout, psychic antihero Manchester Black taunts the businessman, stating that he knows what Superman's true feelings are about Lex after working as a mole on his most recent team. Intrigued, Lex demands Manchester elaborate, and Manchester tells Lex that Superman never mentions him at all. Despite Lex's obsessive hatred for the Kryptonian, Superman doesn't think about him except for when they actually clash.

Superman's Secret Identity Has Been Reversed, For The Better
Image
Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Action Comics #1050

Setting the tone for the new Dawn of the Dcu era, Superman's secret identity has been restored (and it's likely for the better). Having returned to Earth after an extended campaign in space against Mongul and Warworld, Kal-El is back in Metropolis as the Man of Steel, joining his son Jon who became the new Superman in his absence. However, Lex Luthor successfully made the majority of the world forget that Clark Kent was Superman, undoing Superman's public identity reveal back in 2019. While there will no doubt be fallout that Superman and his family will have to reckon with, it may not be such a bad thing going forward.

As seen in Action Comics #1050 from Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Tom Taylor, Joshua Williamson, Mike Perkins, Clayton Henry, and Nick Dragotta, the groundbreaking issue sees Superman facing off with Lex Luthor. Co-opting the hypnotic...

DC Confirms Superman Didn't Need His Powers To Accomplish The Impossible
Image
Warning: Contains spoilers for Action Comics #1050!DC just confirmed that Superman did not need powers to accomplish what might be his most impressive feat ever: converting Manchester Black, who had been one of his biggest haters, to a true believer. In Action Comics #1050, Lex Luthor manages to kidnap Black, who recently joined Superman’s new incarnation of the Authority, and uses Black’s powers for horrifying ends. As Black taunts Luthor, one thing becomes apparent: Manchester Black is now Superman’s biggest fan–and the Man of Steel didn’t need powers to convince him.

The issue, written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Tom Taylor and Joshua Williamson, illustrated by Mike Perkins, Clayton Henry and Nick Dragotta, colored by Frank Martin and lettered by Dave Sharpe, opens with Black in Luthor’s clutches. Luthor intends to use Black’s powers as the touchstone for his “Project: Blackout,” which will erase the...

Superman Admits His One Major Regret About Revealing His Secret Identity
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Action Comics #1050Years after telling the world his secret, Superman has finally admitted his one regret about revealing his secret identity. Superman has always believed in telling the truth, but so has his wife, celebrated investigative journalist Lois Lane. By revealing his identity as Clark Kent to the world, he accidentally reduced Lois to "Superman's wife" in the eyes of the public.

Superman's secret identity as Clark Kent has been an essential component of his story and character from his very first appearance in 1938's Action Comics #1 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. He has revealed that secret to a few people over the years: his parents, of course, as well as the Justice League and its affiliates. Lois Lane was also eventually let into the secret shortly before she married Clark Kent. But both Superman and journalist Clark Kent wholeheartedly believe in the power of the truth,...

Superman's Powers Get A God-Like Upgrade In Action Comics
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Action Comics #1050 ahead!Superman's time on Warworld has left him noticeably stronger than before, but his latest fight against Lex Luthor reveals his new strength to border nigh-on godhood. Although authors have toyed with giving Superman wild arrays of power before, his current strength level places him at the highest echelons of the DC Universe. Lex's latest scheme is to have Earth look to himself and Superman as gods, but it seems Superman has again beaten him to the punch.

Although Superman's original power set was fairly simple (speed and strength), subsequent publications added to his repertoire throughout the years until the Silver Age of Comics had him boasting an increasingly unlikely array of abilities, with "Super Ventriloquism" and "Super Hypnosis" being among the most ludicrous. Modern-day Superman's powers have been largely defined as strength, speed, flight, enhanced senses, heat vision, and cold breath, but events leading...

Superman Fixes Spider-Man's Worst Storyline With One Change
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Action Comics #1050!A new Superman storyline takes a moment to take a jab at a Spider-Man storyline and in the process manages to vastly improve it. The Spidey story in question is none other than the much-maligned and controversial Spider-Man: One More Day. For those who haven't read it, One More Day arrived at comic book stands in 2007 at a point where Peter Parker was in the middle of a loving marriage to Mary-Jane Watson, as well as the fallout of Civil War where he reveals his secret identity to the world.

As a result of the latter, he and his loved ones are immediately put on the radar of Spidey's rogue's gallery, including the Kingpin who sends a henchman to shoot Peter dead, only to hit Aunt May by mistake. Image
Warning: Spoilers for Action Comics #1050As the Dawn of DC vastly approaches, the Superman of Earth-2, Val Zod, returns at the end of the latest issue of Action Comics to tease a team-up with Jon Kent. For those unfamiliar with the character, Val Zod is the Superman of Earth-2. Introduced back in 2014 under the Earth-2 comic series, Val Zod in his world was one of only four Kryptonians to survive Krypton's destruction. Initially raised to be a pacifist, Val Zod was recruited and trained to take on an evil clone of Kal-El, beginning his path to becoming a hero and the new Superman of his world.

Now, Val Zod looks to do some recruiting of his own in the wake of a mysterious plot teased at the conclusion of Action Comics #1050 by Tom Taylor, Joshua Williamson, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Nick Dragotta, Clayton Henry, and Mike Perkins. There, Val Zod...

Superman's Secret Identity Reveal Has Officially Been Reversed In The DC Universe
Image
Spoilers for Action Comics #1050 by DC Comics

Lex Luthor has made the world forget Superman's secret identity as the villain has reversed one of the more shocking storylines in recent DC Comics history. In Action Comics #1050, Luthor reveals that he's telepathically erased the world's memory of Clark Kent being Superman, as he admits that the world needs the Man of Steel but that they need to believe he's a god, not a man who walks among them.

In Action Comics #1050 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Tom Taylor, Joshua Williamson, Mike Perkins, Clayton Henry, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, and Dave Sharpe from DC Comics, Lex Luthor is revealed to have captured and killed Manchester Black, using his telepathic powers to unleash a powerful signal across the world. Superman's New Nickname Should Replace 'The Man of Steel'
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Action Comics #1049As one of the most iconic superheroes, Superman has gone by many nicknames over the years—but his newest should absolutely replace "Man of Steel" as his most important nickname. Given to him by an entire society of people he has saved, "Unblooded Sword" is a far more meaningful name for Superman than anything that has come before.

Considered the dawn of the superhero genre, Superman's debut came in Action Comics #1 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and his nickname "Man of Steel" came not long after in Action Comics #6 by the same iconic team. The "Man of Steel" name has become almost as famous as the hero himself; the 2013 Zack Snyder-directed Superman film is even named Man of Steel. The name emphasizes Superman's strength and invulnerability. Clark Kent is quite literally a man made of something steel-like, as bullets bounce off of him,...

Superman Has Finally Restored Krypton's House of El After 84 Years
Image
Warning: spoilers for Action Comics #1049 ahead! One of the greatest tragedies of the DC Universe - the destruction of Superman's home planet of Krypton - sees its greatest spark of redemption in years with the rebirth of his ancestral family, the House of El. Rather than any kind of retcon or time-travel contrivance to bring back long-dead Kryptonians, the House of El instead sees a true renewal, with Superman inducting every survivor of Warworld into its ranks. It's a truly touching moment, and a reclamation for Superman that's been 84 years in the making.

For all of Superman's vast powers, it's easy to forget that the strength of old Krypton wasn't in a super-powered citizenry (as Krypton's red sun precluded the development of a Kryptonian's empowered physiology), but in their scientific and technological prowess. Forsaking a military past, Krypton became a bastion of learning, particularly accomplished in medical and cloning sciences,...

DC Is Finally Giving Superman Enemies Worthy of His Power
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Action Comics #1049!A war is brewing between Superman and the residents of New Genesis–finally giving the Man of Steel adversaries worthy of his power. In Action Comics #1049, Orion, Kalibak and other Fourth World denizens come to Earth looking to claim the Fire of Olgrun for themselves–but run smack into Superman, who is not letting it go without a fight; when the dust settles, a new feud has been born. The issue is on sale now in print and digital.

The past year of the Man of Steel’s life has been some of the most eventful. Assembling a new incarnation of The Authority, Superman took it upon himself to liberate Warworld, a hellish, artificial planet where numerous species from across the galaxy were forced to fight in gladiatorial games, often to the death; Warworld was ruled by the tyrannical Mongul, who easily beat Superman when he first arrived.

Superman Permanently Redefines His Symbol With New Meaning
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Action Comics #1049!The iconic Superman symbol has just gotten a powerful new meaning in the wake of Clark's liberation of Warworld. Action Comics #1049 shows how the Man of Steel's sigil has evolved from one of hope to one of revolution and collective strength.

The shield of Superman is nearly as iconic as the hero himself. Everyone knows that the hero bears a large red 'S' on his chest, but more dedicated fans of Clark Kent know that this symbol is actually the family crest of Kal-El's family, the House of El. While it's gone through a few changes, the meaning of Superman's symbol is one of hope, as established in the retelling of Superman's origin story, Superman: Birthright. Considering that many people in the DC Universe look up to Superman as an inspirational figure, it makes sense that the hero's emblem be intrinsically associated with hope.

Superman's Secret Identity is Officially Being Restored in DC Comics
Image
It looks like some bells can be unrung, and that's some seriously good news for Superman. It's been revealed that both Clark and his son Jon are both going to have the privilege of a secret identity once more.

Superman fans more than likely have the image of mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent responding to trouble and ripping off his shirt and jacket, revealing the Man of Steel's emblem underneath. For the longest time, the status quo for the hero was that he had a civilian and a superhero life that he kept separate. However, in a press conference, Superman revealed his identity, and since then he's lived his life with both halves merged into one. This extended to Clark's son, the newest Superman, who never exactly had the dichotomy his father embraced for so long. The shift was a radical change to Superman's lore, and its consequences were felt for some time.

Superman Has Unlocked His Strongest Form With A White Star Upgrade
Image
Warning! Contains preview pages from Action Comics #1049!The future is bright for Superman thanks to a powerful upgrade from a hot, new star. A preview for Action Comics #1049 sees the Man of Steel make a bold claim regarding his strength, and the facts may just support his argument.

Things have been rough for Superman as of late. After exposure to a rift in space, Superman began suffering from radiation poisoning that began harming his Kryptonian cells, which led to a slow weakening of the hero. However, in spite of his condition, Superman ventured to Warworld to liberate the planet from their oppressor, the alien dictator, Mongul. Clark was captured and spent a considerable time on Warworld, but eventually inspired an uprising that ended with Warworld's red sun generators being converted to produce white sun energy. The new bursts of power reinvigorated Clark and gave him exactly what he needed to see his mission through.

DC Finally Redeems Superman's Worst Mistake As A Father
Image
Spoilers for Action Comics #1048 ahead!Superman is one of the kindest and greatest heroes in all the DC Universe, but even he can make mistakes, especially when it comes to raising his son Jonathan Kent. However, a recent comic has finally given Superman a chance to redeem what fans often consider his worst parental mistake of all time.

Superman and Lois have had a few different attempts at being parents, first with Lor-Zod, also known as Chris Kent, then later with their son Jonathan Kent, and currently, it seems they have two new adopted children, Osul-Ra and Otho-Ra. Clark and Lois haven't had the best track record of keeping kids, having lost both Chris and Jonathon in different ways, but a recent comic has given Superman a chance to finally fix his past mistakes in regard to his parenting.

Superman Has Accidentally Started DC’s Infinity Gauntlet Saga
Image
It looks like Superman may have begun the equivalent of the Infinity Gauntlet saga for the DC Universe. After plundering a cosmic artifact, the Man of Steel is now coming to terms with what his actions may have done.

Superman's time on Warworld was a harrowing experience, and it forced the hero to confront some very real issues. After attempting to liberate the planet from the clutches of Mongul, Superman and his allies in the Authority found themselves enslaved to fight for Mongul's amusement. However, Superman heard of a power that could possibly turn the tide. Nestled in the heart of Warworld's Necropolis was something known as the Fire of Olgrun, one of seven aspects of an ancient and powerful deity. Clark retrieved the Fire, only to use it to resurrect Osul-Ra, a young Phaelosian slave who now lives on Earth with his sister, Otho-Ra.

Superman vs Darkseid's Son Is DC's Epic Battle of Gods
Image
Spoilers for Action Comics #1048 by DC ComicsWhile Superman's most intense mission on Warworld might have just ended, upon returning to Earth he's being immediately tested by Darkseid's son Orion, who has arrived to question what the Man of Steel has done on the planet. In Action Comics #1048, an encounter with Orion and Darkseid's minions leads to a fight between god-tier-powered forces in the DC Universe, as the supervillain's son wants Superman to answer for potentially waking up a deadly Old God.

Darkseid has a handful of children in the DC Universe, with the mighty New God helping create many minions and fighters that help his evil cause on Apokolips. Darkseid's children include the god-killing Grail, the warrior Kalibak, and Orion, his only offspring not to be raised on the Hellfire planet he ruled. Superman's Most Underrated Ally Returns In New Preview
Image
Warning: contains a preview of Action Comics #1048!Perhaps Superman’s most underrated ally Bibbo makes his grand return in a preview for Action Comics #1048. Bibbo was a staple of Superman comics in the early to mid-1990s, but has made only sporadic appearances since. Now, with the Man of Steel needing as many allies as he can get, Bibbo steps up to help.

Suicide Slum is one of the roughest areas of Metropolis, and Bo “Bibbo” Bibbowsky calls it home. A bartender by trade, Bibbo first appeared in 1987’s Adventures of Superman #428, created by Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway. Bibbo is one of Superman’s biggest fans, referring to the Man of Steel as his “fav’rit.” Bibbo has even come to Superman’s aid at times. Bibbo was a huge presence in the Superman comics of the 1990s, sometimes referred to as “The Triangle Era,” but as it began to wind down,...

Wolverine & Sabretooth's First Rivals Were Heroes, Not Each Other
Image
The rivalry between Wolverine and Sabretooth is one of the most storied in all comics, worthy of mention alongside Batman and the Joker, Spider-Man and the Green Goblin, and Superman and Lex Luthor. While the two nigh-immortal mutants have been at each other's throats for more than 30 years, this wasn't always the case. Before Wolverine and Sabretooth became some of the most well-established archenemies in comic history, they were first pitted up against two different Marvel heroes.

Wolverine entered the Marvel Universe in 1974, with Sabretooth following shortly behind in 1977. More than a decade would pass until the two mutants finally crossed paths in Uncanny X-Men #212 by Chris Claremont and Alan Davis, though it and the subsequent issue would waste no time establishing that Logan and Victor had a history off the pages. While Chris Claremont always intended the two men to be connected, both had to prove themselves elsewhere in Marvel Comics first.

Halloween 2017: 11 Movies You Should Watch on Shudder
We’re in the last remaining days of October, meaning many of us will be trying to cram in as many horror movies as possible between now and Halloween. For my last round of Shudder picks this month, I thought I’d go with a much looser theme: there’s nothing that ties these titles together except that they’re really good movies I think you should watch. Some you may recognize, others may be less familiar to you. All of them are worth streaming on Shudder.

The Bride of Frankenstein (1935, dir. James Whale) It’s not officially October without the Universal Monsters, so big thanks to Shudder for adding most of the big ones to their expanding library of streaming options. There’s no wrong choice when it comes to the classics, but I’ll make the case that Universal never got better than The Bride of Frankenstein, James Whale...

Marvel definitely don’t miss a trick when it comes to a bit of cross-media promotion. With the immortal Iron Fist having just landed on Netflix in his own solo series, Marvel are rebooting the character’s adventures on the page with Iron Fist #1, from creators Ed Brisson and Mike Perkins. Cleverly, the new comic shifts the character to be slightly more aligned with the version played by Finn Jones on the screen – though don’t let that put you off if you had mixed feelings about the series.

Though he isn’t the young ingenue as seen on Netflix, Iron Fist #1 sees Danny Rand likewise without his traditional costume and ripped from his adoptive home of K’un-Lun, the mystical city from where he draws his powers. The issue finds Rand at a loose end...

Check Out An Amazing Variant Cover For Iron Fist’s New Comic Book Series
Iron Fist is set to premiere on Netflix on March 17th, so it makes sense that the character is getting a new comic book series to celebrate that fact during the same month. It won’t be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though; instead, the comic takes place in the regular Marvel Universe and will further delve into the character’s past. Written by Ed Brisson with art by Mike Perkins, Marvel has today released a new variant cover by the latter which offers up a very cool look at Danny Rand doing his thing.

Set to pick up where Kaare Andrew’s Iron Fist: The Living Weapon left off, this new series will also delve into some of the elements which were added to the mythos by Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction and David Aja’s critically acclaimed Immortal Iron Fist series. For more on what to expect, here...
