    Was diagnosed with cancer of the mouth in 1992 and surgery for the condition left him unable to speak properly and with an impediment. Nevertheless, he resumed his acting career. A stroke suffered in 2000 left him further impaired but he persevered again and returned to the screen in the Irish comedy "Sweet Dancer".
