Comedy Legend Mel Brooks Secretly Produced One Of David Lynch's Best Movies
Image
By the late 1970s, Mel Brooks was a worldwide star noted for his hilarious comedy classics. He had already won an Oscar for writing "The Producers" and had released both "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles" in the same year. After that, he moved on to the ambitious 1976 film "Silent Movie," an actual silent movie, before working on "High Anxiety," a surgically pointed spoof of Alfred Hitchcock's work. Both of those films earned well over $30 million at the box office against a $4 million production budget. Brooks was riding high.

While Brooks was rolling in dough as a Hollywood hotshot, an up-and-coming art student from Missoula, Montana was turning heads at the American Film Institute with his audacious, surreal, and nightmarish films and sculptures. He had already made a few notable shorts, and he graduated with a grant, hoping to make his first feature film. For several years, this ambitious young...

Review: ‘Rampo Noir’ J-Horror Anthology on Arrow Video Limited Edition Blu-ray
Image
Japanese author Hirai Tarô took his pen name, Edogawa Rampo, as an homage to the American writer Edgar Allan Poe. Like his idol, he produced numerous stories that incorporated mystery and horror elements in various admixtures, and exhibited a similar fascination with mental abnormalities and (perhaps more so in Rampo’s case) sexual perversities. The term that came to be associated with Rampo’s work starting in the late 1920s was “erotic grotesque nonsense,” delineating a sensibility that outrageously mixed together sex, violence, and a dark sense of humor in ways that bring to mind the surrealist movement percolating to a boil in Paris at around the same time.

Rampo Noir was the unholy brainchild of producer Miyazaki Dai, who had unleashed Miike Takashi’s Ichi the Killer on the world a few years earlier. He hand-selected the four stories to be adapted and then recruited the directors: two industry...

Terrifier 3's Most Shocking Moment Deserves A Deep Dive
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Terrifier 3."

Damian Leone's "Terrifier" movies may be the most improbable slasher franchise of all time. On the surface, a string of films based around the homicidal hijinks of Art the Clown, a slovenly man in a baggy clown suit, sounds like par for the viscera-shredding course, but Leone and his merry ban of fiends have imbued their now three-film saga with a pure love for splatter f/x and a deepening narrative lore that's daringly unrushed. Think two-hours-plus is too long for a slasher film? The growing legion of "Terrifier" devotees declare otherwise.

The magic, so to speak, of the "Terrifier" movies is their ability to hit Jörg Buttgereit levels of gore without provoking mass walkouts. Obviously, the sight of Art (David Howard Thornton) carving up a victim while his female sidekick (and one-time victim) Vicky pleasures herself to spewing completion is going to get some folks tapping out,...

In Search of Darkness 1990 – 1994 trailer: documentary series leaves the ’80s behind and dives into a new decade
Image
Over the course of three In Search of Darkness documentary films, all of which were over four hours long (with one of them nearly reaching the six hour mark), director David Weiner did an incredible job of digging into the many great (and some not-so-great) horror movies that were released in the 1980s. There were still so many movies left uncovered that Weiner could circle back and continue looking into ’80s movies for years to come – but instead, he has decided to move forward into the ’90s with the upcoming documentary In Search of Darkness: 1990 – 1994. At the time, fans considered the horror genre to be in a lull, a downswing from the heights it reached in the ’80s. But with this movie, Weiner aims to point out that we did still get a lot of good horror movies during that time period. You can get a sample of the...

The Correct Order To Watch The Fifty Shades Of Grey Movies
Image
E.L. James' original "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy is undoubtedly the most successful piece of fanfiction ever published. James turned the teen-friendly romance between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen in Stephenie Meyer's wildly popular "Twilight" franchise into an erotic reverie explored by the mysterious (and quite wealthy) entrepreneur Christian Grey and college journalist Kate Kavanaugh. It was a Bdsm gateway drug that opened up a healthy portal for kink-curious young adults. You didn't have to feel like a freak for wanting to do what conservative society deemed freaky.

Was it good literature? Does it matter? James' novels have sold hundreds of millions of copies and been translated into 52 different languages. They are adored by people who never knew they wanted to see Bella and Edward engage in consensual sadomasochism. I am happy they have these stories in their lives. What matters, at least when it comes to my bailiwick,...

Sound And Vision: Richard Bates Jr.
Image
In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at White Lung's Below, directed by Richard Bates Jr. Richard Bates Jr. made an impressive debut with Excision, a gory coming-of-age horror with a powerful central performance for AnnaLynne McCord. In it, a young woman who has an obsession with blood and bodies, goes very far to get back at the people who hurt her and save her sister. It plays like a mix between John Hughes and Jörg Buttgereit, and is exactly as fucked-up as that sentence seems to imply. While Richard Bates Jr. never really fulfilled the promise of Excision, films like Tone-deaf, Trash Fire and King Knight...

Five Doomed Horror-Romance Movies to Stream This Week
Image
Happily ever after isn’t a concept often found in horror, which makes for a perfect antidote to the saccharine sentimentality of Valentine’s Day. Since love is in the air this week, this week’s streaming picks highlight the downside to romance: the brutal heartbreaks.

Because it’s horror, it’s never as straightforward as a breakup. Psychosis, body horror transformations, and death are some of the causes behind this week’s doomed romance titles.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

The Fly – HBO Max

Screambox’s ‘The Anchor’ and 5 More Psychological Horror Movies to Watch
Image
Horror movies that feature an intense and probing study of its characters’ minds can often be the most terrifying. An external dilemma is scary all on its own, but learning what makes dangerous people tick is something else entirely. The protagonist of Screambox‘s latest release, The Anchor, has her own encounter with an unpredictable person when she receives a disturbing phone call at work. TV newscaster Se-ra (Chun Woo-hee) gets a “tip” from a mother claiming a man has broken into her house. She insists the intruder will kill her after having murdered her daughter. Se-ra, believing this is a sick prank, then doesn’t help the caller. Later, she realizes the grave mistake she’s made.

Jung Ji-yeon‘s first movie isn’t as straightforward as the plot makes it sound. In fact, The Anchor is a twisty thriller full of genuine jolts and pleasant surprises. It’s also confidently made,...

Living in the Muck: A Conversation with Kier-La Janisse
Image
Canadian author, director, festival programmer, and publisher Kier-La Janisse is a true renaissance woman when it comes to film, having sculpted a unique career focusing on cult, horror, and exploitation cinema. Through her small press, Spectacular Optical, she has published books on French fantastique director Jean Rollin, the satanic panic craze, Christmas horror, and bizarre children’s films, among other fantastically niche topics. In recent years her directorial debut, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021), won Best Documentary at several festivals, inspired folk horror film screenings in theaters and on Shudder, and was released as part of a massive, fifteen-disc box set through Severin Films. And now, ten years after its initial publication, Fab Press is releasing a new edition of her essential tome, House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films. Romance is dead! Messed Up Puzzles and Cult Epics bring you the first ever series of jigsaw puzzles for necrophiles. Nekromantik and Nekromantik 2: The Return Of The Loving Dead join the Messed Up family as Nos. 7 and 8 respectively. Each one features 1000 corpse-riding pieces cut from the original art by Andreas Marschall.

For the uninitiated, Nekromantik concerns the ménage a trois between Rob, his girlfriend, and the corpse he brings home from his job cleaning up after grisly accidents. This doesn’t end as well as one might think. In Nekromantik 2, a beautiful, grave-digging nurse explores her necrophilia and has to choose between the living and the dead with regard to her love life. Banned in Germany upon their release,...

Stars: Lola Gove, Axel Holst, Anika Strauss, Matthan Harris, Denis Lyons, Milton Welsh, Désirée Giorgetti, Kristina Kostiv, Rüdiger Kuhlbrodt | Directed by Jörg Buttgereit, Michal Kosakowski, Andreas Marschall

Whenever a new underground horror film gets announced; I can get instantly overtaken by doubt. I have had too many underwhelming and tedious experiences. Every now and then, a film comes around that isn’t a throwback, isn’t a generic slasher or an extreme gorefest with no actual weight. When I first found out that Jörg Buttgereit was teaming up with other creatives to make an anthology, I was pretty damn excited! I have followed the project on and off since I first caught wind of the it and now the film has been screened as part of this years Mayhem Horror Film Festival And Grimmfest, as well as being released in Germany on DVD and Blu-Ray. Naturally, I felt obliged to check it out.

The Bottom Shelf: The Return Of Swamp Thing, Creepozoids, Nekromantik 2
Nick Aldwinckle Jul 20, 2017

Our latest round up of genre DVDs and Blu-rays is here, with Wes Craven, Creepozoids, Dario Argento and more...

With the DC cinematic universe currently riding high on the coattails of Wonder Woman, Patty Jenkins’ megahit antidote to the miserablism of messrs Bats and Soops, it would seem churlish to point out that company’s past failures. Things being as they are, though, with the recent release of a camp classic on Blu-ray, it’s time to do precisely that.

The sequel to Wes Craven’s 1982 superhero effort that was more Toxie than Alan Moore, Jim Wynorski’s 1989 adaptation of the tale of scientist turned mutant bog creature Alec Holland, slyly monikered The Return Of Swamp Thing, cranks the ridiculousness dial right up to 'comedy horror' level. As Swampy meets the love of his life, Abigail – Heather (Locklear) be thy name – and battles the evil Anton Arcane (Louis Jourdan,...

‘Lock the Doors’ Review (Black Lava)
“Trügerische Sicherheit”

When it comes to splatter and gore, there’s one country that is infamous for it’s underground scene: Germany. I’m guessing that if you’re a cult film fan, you may have sat through a couple. Whether you like them or not, visionaries like Jörg Buttgereit (Nekromantik), Andreas Schnaas (Violent Shit) and Olaf Ittenbach (The Burning Moon) – to name just a few – have not only carved out a macabre living for themselves, but have also marvelled and inspired plenty of filmmakers the world over. From arthouse to shithouse, from Diy to moderately budgeted – there is a vast amount of films from Germany’s bloody and gruesome underground film scene for you to discover. Fast forward to today and it’s a bit more of a scarce landscape. Thankfully, Austrian based label Black Lava Entertainment are one of the distributors giving this often crude art form and...

21 Nights with Pattie | 2016 Rendez-Vous with French Cinema Review
Carnal Knowledge: The Larrieu Bros.’ Strange Depiction of Summer Lovin’

Directing duo Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu create oddly distinct pieces of bizarre cinema, yet remain relatively unknown outside of France even though they’ve been regularly presenting new features over the past decade. Their latest is a necrophilic inspired sexual awakening comedy, blasting away at the usual sort of conventions we’re accustomed to in similar provincially mannered fare. Reteaming with a few ensemble players who’ve populated their last features, 21 Nights with Pattie is an enigmatic pattern of elements both unpredictable and borderline grotesque. Delightfully strange, and featuring an excellent ensemble of familiar French faces, this is certainly a more inventive take on the sexual awakening portrait—sort of like a romantic comedy version of Georges Bataille with just a dash of Jorg Buttgereit.

Caroline (Isabelle Carre) travels to a small village in the Pyrenees to bury her mother,...

How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2015?Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2015—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2015 to create a unique double feature. All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2015 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...

Review: Nekromantik 2 (Blu-ray)
When Jorg Buttgereit unleashed Nekromantik on the world in 1987 he set his stall out as being both a controversial and fascinating director, the film crossing several lines of taste and decency and climaxing with one of the most outrageous and bold scenes that I’d seen, and I was a student of the BBFC’s infamous 72 title list of films banned under the Video Recordings Act 1984.

Four years later, he served up the sequel, Nekromantik 2, which not only opened by revisiting the final few minutes of the first one as part of the credit sequence, but further cemented his reputation as a true horror cinematic maverick.

Nekromantik 2 is a bizarre film, part shock fest and part fairy tale, as it tells the story of Monika (Monika M), a pretty grave robber who digs up the corpse of the first movie’s protagonist Rob in order to carry on a relationship with it.

Pretty Packaging: Nekromantik 2 Need Not Be Called A Sloppy Second
(But... but... who said I wanted more of this?!) Last year, Arrow UK shocked everyone by announcing a pimped edition of Nekromantik, Jörg Buttgereit's grungy art-horror film about a necrophiliac, his hobbies and his dreams. In fact, that edition was so well done, and included so many great extras about Why the film was made, that it overwon my distaste and I made a gallery about it last year. And of course this year I actually met Jörg Buttgereit, interviewed him as part of the directors of German Angst, and he is an interesting and intelligent guy with interesting and intelligent ideas about cinema, of the horror kind and otherwise. When I congratulated him with the stellar treatment Arrow had given Nekromantik, he said: "I...

‘Nekromantik 2′ Blu-ray Review (Arrow Video)
Stars: Monika M, Mark Reeder, Lena Braun, Carola Ewers, Astrid Ewerts, Eva-Maria Kurz, Daktari Lorenz, Beatrice Manowski | Written by Jörg Buttgereit, Franz Rodenkirchen | Directed by Jörg Buttgereit

After the Arrow Film release of Nekromantik it was only a matter of time before Nekromantik 2 made its way onto Blu-ray. Another banned movie featuring people with an infatuation with the dead, this one takes things a little more extreme, if that was even possible.

When Monika (Monika M.) meets Mark (Mark Reeder) they soon become lovers, but this causes problems for the nurse. While Mark is handsome and trustworthy, the corpse is a better lover. How can she decide between the two?

Nekromantik 2 feels very much like the first film but with a bigger budget. This time though there is a satirical edge to the film which makes fun of the art film style with which it actually embraces at the same time.

Mayhem 2015: ‘German Angst’ Review
Stars: Lola Gove, Axel Holst, Anika Strauss, Matthan Harris, Denis Lyons, Milton Welsh, Désirée Giorgetti, Kristina Kostiv, Rüdiger Kuhlbrodt | Directed by Jörg Buttgereit, Michal Kosakowski, Andreas Marschall

Regular readers may know that whenever a new underground horror film gets announced; I can get instantly overtaken by doubt.

The Definitive Foreign Language Horror Films: 30-21
What is it about foreign horror films that makes them more interesting than so many English language horror films? You would have to think that the language barrier makes it more terrifying; people screaming is already difficult, but speaking a language you don’t understand can only make it worse. So, why are the remakes typically so bad? On this portion of the list, we are treated to a few of the more upsetting films in the canon – one movie I wouldn’t wish for anyone to see, a few that blazed the trail for many more, and one that I would elevate above the horror genre into its own little super-genre.

30. Janghwa, Hongryeon (2003)

English Title: A Tale of Two Sisters

Directed by: Kim Ji-woon

Another excellent Korean horror film America had to remake to lesser results. 2003’s A Tale of Two Sisters is just one of many film adaptations of the folktale,...

The Interview With All Directors Of German Angst Continues! Marschall! Kosakowski! Buttgereit! Part 2!
This weekend, the Berlin-based horror anthology German Angst can be seen at Fantasia. It had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and the next day I was allowed to speak with all three directors. In the picture above (taken during the world premiere's introduction) they are, from left to right: Andreas Marschall, Michal Kosakowski, and Jörg Buttgereit. We published the first half of the interview back in May (read it here), and now that it has landed in the Us, here is the second and last part. Note that in this part, we speak about the stories in the segments, so there are mild spoilers ahead... TwitchFilm: How did the German Angst project as a whole come about? Did you all...

German Angst Comes To North America, Courtesy Of Artsploitation
Here's some news for North America's edgier horror fans: the Berlin-based horror anthology German Angst has been picked up for distribution by Artsploitation, as Variety reported first. German Angst tells three loosely interlinked stories taking place in present-day Berlin, concerning abuse, right-wing extremism, and addiction. Its writer-directors are Michal Kosakowski, Andreas Marschall and Jörg Buttgereit. These three are not exactly known for pulling punches, and you can rest assured the episodes all reside on the far end of the sex-and-violence spectrum. After its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam earlier this year (where I saw and reviewed it), the film has had its general domestic release, and is currently touring festivals worldwide. The curious and impatient can check it out tomorrow already at...
