Can Live Event Celebrity Group Chats Take Over the Second Screen?
Image
Earlier this month, Lakers star LeBron James took to the group chat to react to the NFL Draft, and expressed a distinct lack of enthusiasm for the choice made by his hometown Cleveland Browns (defensive tackle Mason Graham).

But this group chat wasn’t just for his buddies (though friend and business partner Maverick Carter was in it), it was for “The Chat,” a new effort from WhatsApp and sports culture brand OffBall to engage sports fans in a place they, quite frankly, are already talking about sports.

“There’s no question that the second screen experience is a huge part of how people watch sports and we think there is a real opportunity around the group chat experience as people seek out more intimate and direct engagements with their favorite follows – it’s how friends, family, and communities want to watch sports,” says Jennie Morel, the head of marketing for WhatsApp.

Prior to next week’s NBA trade deadline, stars like Jimmy Butler, De’Aaron Fox, and Zach Lavine were oft-mentioned on the marketplace, but no one — front-office execs, beat writers, and fans — could have fathomed that a player with the magnitude...

Here’s everything you need to know about why Abbott Elementary won’t be back on your screen until December, and what’s on the cards for next year.

So, why are we left in the cold for a bit? Well, one of the big reasons is the 58th Annual CMA Awards, which aired on November 20. These award shows take up a lot of primetime real estate, and of course, Abbott had to make room for that.

5 Moments in NBA Doc Series 'Starting 5' That Prove Basketball Gods Are Simply Mere Mortals

Starting 5 takes basketball fans into uncharted territory, showcasing the relentless effort professional athletes put forth to compete for a championship while also prioritizing their families and mental well-being. Showrunner Peter Scalettar says that revealing the core motivations for LeBron James, Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, Domontas Sabonis, and Jayson Tatum gives fans a never-before-seen perspective on the biggest players in basketball.

“Every part of it is illuminating,” Scalettar tells Tudum. “Whether it’s being in the locker room or a living room, it all feels new and fresh. The NBA has not provided this type of access before.”

Scalettar handled that access with care, ensuring his team didn’t hinder the athletes’ efforts. “We don’t want to get in the way of their main objective, so the first hurdle is finding spots where we can fit in and not be a distraction,” he says. “Being with a player on...

What to watch this weekend October 11, 2024: TV awards contenders
Image
School is finally back in session! ABC’s Emmy-winning comedy “Abbott Elementary” returned for its fourth season this week, and even though we’re getting a full 22 episodes once more, the show thankfully didn’t wait too long to confirm the state of TV’s cutest union. In the premiere, which is now streaming on Hulu, Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory’s (Tyler James Williams) relationship takes center stage, and while it’s clear the two still have some things to figure out, the change in their romantic status leads Ava (Janelle James) to call in a district Hr rep to ensure that everything is above board. Meanwhile, the construction of a nearby golf course leads to some interesting changes for the school and our favorite teachers. As charming and funny as ever, “Abbott Elementary” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

‘Starting 5’ Boss on Capturing Jayson Tatum’s Championship Run: “You Couldn’t Script it”
Image
When Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum stepped foot on the sidewalk in front of Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre for the world premiere of Netflix’s Starting 5, an announcer’s voice cut through the music to announce the arrival of a “world champion” over the loud speakers. Yes, there was an announcer and a deejay at the high-energy Sept. 23 premiere, which featured a hardcourt in place of a traditional red carpet and rows of basketballs to set the scene.

“It’s a hell of a feeling, man,” Tatum told The Hollywood Reporter minutes later of being introduced to the crowd in that way, thanks to his Boston Celtics winning the NBA championship last season, a victory followed by a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. “We accomplished something that’s almost impossible to do, something we worked very hard to do. I’m glad we made it happen.”

LeBron James NBA Docuseries ‘Starting 5’ Is a Mediocre Ode to Excellence: TV Review
Image
In the fourth episode of “Starting 5,” the Netflix docuseries tracking the 2023-2024 season of the National Basketball Association through a handful of star players, LeBron James lets off some post-game steam by teasing his wife, Savannah. “Stop!” she says, laughing. “We’re on camera!”

“That’s my camera,” James replies. The subtext is clear: Nothing will make the final cut if he doesn’t want it to.

James’ production company, Uninterrupted, is the primary backer of “Starting 5,” which juxtaposes the guiding light of the Los Angeles Lakers with four colleague-rivals: Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat, Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics, Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Domantas Sabonis of the Sacramento Kings. For the 10-episode season, Uninterrupted partnered with two other outfits associated with public figures: Omaha Productions, the shingle of ex-NFL quarterback Peyton Manning, and Higher Ground, the Hollywood venture of Barack and Michelle Obama.

Under terms of the deal, Mediawan and SpringHill Co. will develop and co-produce original film and TV projects.

The alliance with SpringHill Co. gives Mediawan another entry point into the U.S. market alongside Plan B (of which it acquired a majority stake in 2022). The Paris-headquartered television and film production group is backed by Kkr and was founded in 2015 by producer Pierre-Antoine Capton, telco billionaire Xavier Niel and financier Matthieu Pigasse.

Going forward, SpringHill Co. and Mediawan also plan to collaborate on adapting their intellectual properties, including on a local basis, and look at potential new international distribution. The partnership already has several projects in the works — including the basketball-themed “Weekend Warriors,” which will be produced by SpringHill Co.

Google borrows creators’ credibility for Pixel phone launch
Image
because here we are

The keynote address at the 2024 Made by Google showcase was a typical tech demo, but the event’s “After Party” popped off. That’s the name Google gave to a post-keynote stream that featured appearances from a diverse group of YouTubers, actors, sports stars, drag queens, and product execs.

The Made by Google keynote doubled as the coming-out party for the Google Pixel 9, the latest smartphone line to come out of Mountain View. Launch events like that are typically dry by design, with the onstage execs paying more attention to the technical specs of their devices than to the color and character of their remarks.

The After Party immediately presented a different vibe. Actor Keke Palmer emceed the stream and set the tone right from the opening moments. “The keynote is done now,” she said. “It’s time for the Keke now.”

Grant Ellis in The Bachelor (2002)
The Bachelor viewers celebrate Lea Cayanan exit in Montreal
Grant Ellis in The Bachelor (2002)
Lea Cayanan could have been a Bachelor Nation fan favorite.

She started strong on Season 28 of The Bachelor when she burned her special power, which was to take a one-on-one date from someone else.

Joey rewarded Lea with the first impression rose for what she did, but it seems she made an even bigger impression — and not in a good way — later in the season.

Despite starting out strong and being one of the liked Bachelor women, Lea took a turn when it came to fan support when she turned on Maria.

It was after Sydney was sent home during the two-on-one date with Maria in Malta.

When Maria returned, and Sydney was sent packing, Lea questioned Madina’s loyalty because she welcomed Maria back.

Then, Lea went too far with the hate when she complained about having to be with Maria on a group date, and we’re still scratching our heads,...

How Actor Kevin Miles Became “Jake From State Farm”
Image
Kevin Miles feels he has nothing to offer. The actor lets that slip less than five minutes after we meet when I ask him why he doesn’t do many interviews. We’re walking to a sports bar a dozen blocks south of Radio City Music Hall, where he’s about to go see comedian Matt Rife, his old neighbor and friend, perform. Miles is dressed in a light gray Alo overcoat, a black Fear of God tee and black Jordans. A pearl necklace with a buskin charm, a replica of one worn by his actress great-grandmother, swings around his neck. It’s all very Los Angeles-guy-in-New York, which he is.

“Right now, I don’t have a lot of other things” — as in roles, projects — “that I feel like are what I want,” the 33-year-old says, with a small, ultra-white smile. “Besides Jake.”

“Jake” is Jake from State Farm,...

Image
As Miami’s 2024 Pegasus World Cup drew to a close with a $3 million win by champion thoroughbred National Treasure and a DJ set by Calvin Harris, the post-race buzz was about how the event will spin off into a West Coast version at Santa Anita racetrack this fall. The California Crown, taking place Sept. 28, will be the first entertainment-driven thoroughbred racing event at the historic grounds with The h. wood Group and track-owner 1/St partnering.

“You’ll see some things that are similar to what we do at Pegasus. We will bring together music, entertainment and fashion, but it’ll be more of a vintage Hollywood vibe,” says Belinda Stronach, chairwoman and CEO of 1/St, a technology, entertainment and real estate development company centered around thoroughbred racing and pari-mutuel wagering. 1/St also owns Miami’s Gulfstream track and Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, home of the Triple Crown’s Preakness Stakes.
