In Memoriam: Richard Chamberlain in Words & Exclusive Portraits
Image
Chicago – When I heard of the passing of actor Richard Chamberlain on March 29th, 2025, I immediately flashed back to our interview in 2010. It was the first comprehensive celebrity interview in my career, and it was a whirlwind of show biz history and reveals. And Joe Arce took Exclusive Portraits of him then and in 2017.

Richard Chamberlain was born in Beverly Hills, attended Pomona College and served in the U.S. Army in the late 1950s. He was a founding member of the Los Angeles theater group “Company of Angels,” and started doing guest roles in various television shows.

A Florid Career: Richard Chamberlain in 2010

His breakthrough came in 1961, when he portrayed Dr. James Kildare in the popular series “Dr. Kildare,” which catapulted him into superstar status for the time. This led to a smaller but successful singing career – his rendition of the “Theme from Dr.

Adam Sandler Won a Razzie for Just Go with It Based On an Oscar-Winner
Image
More often than not, a film's remake doesn't live up to the original. Add Adam Sandler's comedy into the mix of a remake, and it will certainly be a stinker. Sandler's 2011 film Just Go with It marked a low point for the actor's career, winning the actor a Razzie for his performance, even though it was based on an Oscar-winning film.

The plot of Just Go with It focuses on Adam Sandler's character, Dr. Danny Maccabee when he gets caught in a lie while wooing a girl. Danny still owns a wedding ring from a marriage that never lasted past the wedding day, and as he's flirting with a teacher, she finds his ring. She thinks he's using her to cheat on his wife, but he tells her he's going through a divorce. He convinces his assistant, played by Jennifer Aniston, to pretend to be his wife, so he can keep up the lie.

Why Just Go With It's Reviews Are So Bad
Image
The romantic comedy Just Go With It was not well received by critics upon its initial release in 2011. Directed by Dennis Dugan, the movie depicts a plastic surgeon who pretends to be in an unhappy marriage to seduce women. When his lies threaten a potential new relationship, his office assistant and her kids reluctantly agree to pose as his family; a weekend getaway to Hawaii ends up complicating matters for everybody.

The movie was a modern remake of the 1969 comedy Cactus Flower, which, in turn, was adapted from the 1965 play by Abe Burrows. The cast of Just Go With It is led by Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston and was one of several movies produced by Sandler's company, Happy Madison Productions. However, upon initial release, Just Go With It was negatively received by critics, with many citing it as a disappointing remake of an underrated classic comedy movie.

Rob Marshall at an event for Tony Bennett: An American Classic (2006)
Academy Award nominee Rob Marshall is rolling the dice on a remake of Guys and Dolls. Many attempts have been made over the years to get a new movie adaptation of Guys and Dolls off the ground, but according to Variety, a lucky hand might have been dealt as filmmaker Rob Marshall has now signed on to the latest effort. Sonys TriStar Pictures will produce the film as they acquired the remake rights from MGM, the original short stories, and the Broadway musical.

Based on two short stories by Damon Runyon titled "Blood Pressure" and "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown," Guys and Dolls was a hit Broadway musical that debuted in 1950 that follows the story of gamblers Sky Masterson and Nathan Detroit,...

Peter Marshall, Host of ‘The Hollywood Squares,’ Dies at 98
Image
Peter Marshall, the velvety-voiced host who presided over NBC’s celebrity-filled game show The Hollywood Squares for 16 years, died Thursday. He was 98.

Marshall, an accomplished singer who also was a leading man on Broadway and one-half of a popular comedy team before embarking on his game-show gig, died of kidney failure at his Encino home, his family announced.

The pride of West Virginia hosted some 6,000 episodes of The Hollywood Squares from 1966 through 1981, winning four Daytime Emmy Awards. Marshall often worked just one day a week, when he taped five shows. “It was the easiest job I ever had, and I never rehearsed,” he said.

Soon after starring in the Tony-nominated Broadway musical comedy Skyscraper opposite Julie Harris, Marshall was offered the job as host of The Hollywood Squares, created by Merrill Heatter and Bob Quigley. An earlier version of the show, hosted by Bert Parks, had been turned down.

‘The Bear’ is the latest in a long line of workplace comedy series
Image
FX’s “The Bear” has been the series equivalent of a three-star Michelin, James Beard Award-winning restaurant since its premiere in 2022. Created by writer/director/product Christopher Storer, the hit show revolves around Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), a chef from the fine dining world in New York, who returns to his home in Chicago to run the family’s sandwich shop after the suicide of his brother. The first season won 10 Emmys including best comedy series and actor in a comedy series for White. Besides earning a Peabody, “The Bear” also performed well at the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes. The second season is a strong Emmy contender and the third season which just dropped will probably follow suit in 2025.

Since the early days of TV, restaurants, nightclubs, coffee shops, bars and diners have played an important role in countless series including the beloved multi-Emmy Award-winning 1982-93 NBC sitcom “Cheers”. In fact,...

Breaking Baz: Daniel Mays Talks On-Set Sing-Alongs With Michael Douglas, ‘Guys & Dolls’ Olivier Nom & “Horrendous” Treatment Of ‘Romeo & Juliet’ Star Francesca Amewudah-Rivers
Image
Daniel Mays remembers Michael Douglas and Timothy Van Patten, the respectively star and director of new Apple TV drama Franklin, bursting into song whenever he appeared on set.

It came about because during the Franklin shoot in Paris, director Nicholas Hytner asked Mays to star at London’s Bridge Theatre as good old reliable Nathan Detroit in an immersive production of the classic Broadway fable Guys & Dolls by Frank Loesser, Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling.

Upon hearing this news, Douglas insisted, ”You’re doing it, Danny — no question about it.”

The adaption of Damon Runyon’s tales was Van Patten’s father’s favorite musical, “so then within the hour, more like a whole bloody second, every time I came on set, they kept playing ‘The Oldest Established [Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York], and Michael and Noah Jupe would join in.”

Even the French crew got in the swing of it.

Kelsey Grammer Talks Future For ‘Frasier,’ Possible ‘Cheers’ Crossover, ‘Girlfriends’ Reboot & More: The Deadline Q&a
Image
Nearly four decades after playing Frasier Crane in the third season of Cheers and thirty years since Frasier Crane got his own show, Kelsey Grammer is back with a Frasier revival, currently streaming on Paramount+.

The series takes fans on a new adventure with the titular Frasier, older and wiser with hopes of fixing his relationship with his grown-up son Frederick “Freddy” Crane, played by Jack Cutmore-Scott, whom he shares with his ex-wife Lilith Sternin (Bebe Neuwirth). Oh, and all of this is taking place in Boston, a change from Seattle where the original spinoff series was set but where everything began for Frasier.

Grammer spoke to Deadline about why the new series’ focus was the perfect next chapter, reuniting with both Neuwirth and director James Burrows, and more.

L-r: Jess Salgueiro as Eve, Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, Jack Cutmore-Scott as Freddy Crane, Kelsey Grammer as Frasier and Nicholas Lyndhurst...

James Burrows Has ‘Attended the Death of Multi-Camera Sitcoms in Every Decade,’ but He’s Not Done Making Studio Audiences Laugh
Image
It’s Frasier Week at IndieWire. Grab some tossed salad and scrambled eggs, settle into your coziest easy chair, and join us. We’re listening.

Every true “Frasier” fan knows that kitchens are soundproof havens for covert plotting. Whenever Frasier, Martin, Niles, or Daphne needed the rest of the family to help them convince guests that they were Jewish, gay, married, single, or an entirely different person, they’d craft an excuse to sidebar in the kitchen. And despite the apartment’s open floor plan, nobody ever caught a peep of the screaming matches that ensued while plating Camembert.

So it’s fitting that the first episode of the new Paramount+ revival features plenty of kitchen scheming. When Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane attempts to reconnect with his adult son Freddy (now played by Jack Cutmore-Scott), an impromptu dinner party at his Boston apartment quickly devolves into a game of telephone.

Bo Goldman, Oscar-Winning Screenwriter on ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ and ‘Melvin and Howard,’ Dies at 90
Image
Bo Goldman, the late-blooming guru of screenwriting who received Academy Awards for his work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Melvin and Howard, has died. He was 90.

Goldman died Tuesday in Helendale, California, his son-in-law, director Todd Field, told The New York Times.

Goldman’s first screenplay was, years after he wrote it, directed by Alan Parker for Shoot the Moon (1982), which featured Diane Keaton and Albert Finney in a raw, seriocomic drama about a disintegrating marriage.

He also co-wrote the Mark Rydell-directed rock drama The Rose (1979), starring Bette Midler in an Oscar-nominated turn, and Martin Brest’s Scent of a Woman (1992), which netted him his third Academy Award nom (and Al Pacino the best actor Oscar, too).

Goldman was one of the handful of screenwriters — Paddy Chayefsky, Francis Ford Coppola, Horton Foote, William Goldman, Billy Wilder and Joel and Ethan Coen among them — to win Academy...

Ed Ames, ’50s Pop Singer With Ames Brothers And ‘60s TV Star In ‘Daniel Boone,’ Dies At 95
Image
Ed Ames, the youngest member of the popular 1950s singing group the Ames Brothers, who later became a successful actor in television and musical theatre, has died. He was 95.

The last survivor of the four singing brothers, Ames died May 21 from Alzheimer’s disease, his wife, Jeanne Ames, said Saturday.

“He had a wonderful life,” she said.

On television, Ames was likely best known for his role as Mingo, the Oxford-educated Native American in the 1960s adventure series “Daniel Boone” that starred Fess Parker as the famous frontiersman. He also was the centre of a bit on “The Tonight Show” that — thanks to his painfully uncanny aim with a hatchet — became one of the show’s most memorable surprise moments.

Ames had guest roles in TV series such as “Murder, She Wrote” and “In the Heat of the Night,” and toured frequently in musicals, performing such popular songs as “Try to Remember...

Tony Awards flashback to 1963: A not so funny thing happened to Stephen Sondheim
Image
What do the 76th annual Tonys have in common with the 17th annual awards?

Stephen Sondheim.

The late, great influential composer is represented in this year’s Tonys with the acclaimed, popular revivals of his 1979 classic “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Street” earning eight nominations and 1987’s “Into the Woods” receiving six.

Sixty years ago, it was Sondheim’s musical comedy “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” which dominated the Tony Awards with six wins: best musical, best producer for Harold Prince, best director for George Abbott, best author for Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, leading actor for Zero Mostel and featured actor for David Burns. Ironically, Sondheim failed to earn a nomination for best original score (music and/or lyrics) written for the theater. He would not win for his tunes until “Company” in 1971. Vying in that category were “Stop the World I Wanted...

‘American Masters: Groucho & Cavett’ Explores Special Relationship Between Comedy Greats
Image
Dick Cavett can still picture the exact moment and location in New York City when he first met the man who would become one of his most cherished pals. It was 1961 and Cavett, then a 25-year-old writer for Jack Parr on The Tonight Show, met the legendary Groucho Marx after they both attended the funeral for playwright George S. Kaufman.

“He was walking east up 81st Street toward Fifth Avenue flanked by Art Carney on one side and Abe Burrows on the other,” recalls Cavett to Deadline. “And then when they left him, I moved to the corner of Fifth and 81st. And in one of my great inspired uses of the English language, I said the terribly witty ‘I’m a big fan of yours, Groucho.’ And he said, ‘well, if it’s gets any hotter, I could use a big fan.'”

After exchanging a few pleasantries, Marx,...

Back in that age we call golden, Broadway marquees were frequently set ablaze by long-running plays that producers looking to turn a profit lovingly referred to as boulevard comedies. These were typically middlebrow laugh machines expertly crafted by the likes of Mary Chase, Neil Simon or Abe Burrows Think Harvey, The Odd Couple or Cactus Flower, involving contemporary everyday characters in realistic situations containing just enough sentiment to make you care about what happens next, while maybe even wrapping up with an uncontroversial, heartwarming message.

Thomas Kail’s Incredible Journey From Directing Sitcoms to Winning Awards to ‘Fosse/Verdon’
Thomas Kail
Nearly every director of note has some surprising stuff on their resume — after all, the path to success often includes some unusual detours. But Thomas Kail’s path to winning a Tony, an Emmy, and yet again becoming an Emmy contender for his work on FX’s “Fosse/Verdon”? It included a period of time hanging out on the set of CBS’s six-season multi-camera sitcom “2 Broke Girls.” Not an obvious point of entry into the awards scene, but a place where Kail told IndieWire “you take a lot of the skills that you’ve cultivated in the theater.”

Kail is currently an executive producer and director on the FX limited series, another project on which he’s collaborating with “Hamilton” mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda. “Hamilton” is, of course, the Broadway blockbuster show Kail directed, which won 11 Tony awards (including one for Kail for direction), and in 2016, the Fox production of...

Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons, and Vivian Blaine in Blanches colombes et vilains messieurs (1955)
“Guys and Dolls,” the venerable Broadway musical, is set to return to the big screen.

TriStar Pictures has purchased remake rights to the original Damon Runyon short stories about gamblers and gangsters that inspired the shows, as well as the rights to the Broadway musical with its book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows and its music by Frank Loesser. The studio has also acquired remake rights to the previous 1955 film adaptation from the Samuel Goldwyn company. That version of “Guys and Dolls” starred Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra, and Vivian Blaine, and was directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, who also wrote the screenplay.

Movie musicals have been robust box office performers in recent years. Hit adaptations of stage shows include “Hairspray,” “Chicago,” and “Les Miserables,” and original musicals such as “The Greatest Showman” and “La La Land” have also been successes. In the case of “Guys and Dolls,...

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
Broadway’s delightful — but wickedly accurate — satire of big business was brought to movie screens almost intact, with the story, the stars, the styles and dances kept as they were in the long-running show that won a Pulitzer Prize. This is the place to see Robert Morse and Michele Lee at their best — it’s one of the best, and least appreciated movie musicals of the 1960s.

Actress Martha Stewart May Still Be Alive Despite Two-Year-Old Reports to the Contrary
Martha Stewart: Actress / Singer in Fox movies apparently not dead despite two-year-old reports to the contrary (Photo: Martha Stewart and Perry Como in 'Doll Face') According to various online reports, including Variety's, actress and singer Martha Stewart, a pretty blonde featured in supporting roles in a handful of 20th Century Fox movies of the '40s, died at age 89 of "natural causes" in Northeast Harbor, Maine, on February 25, 2012. Needless to say, that was not the same Martha Stewart hawking "delicious foods" and whatever else on American television. But quite possibly, the Martha Stewart who died in February 2012 -- if any -- was not the Martha Stewart of old Fox movies either. And that's why I'm republishing this (former) obit, originally posted more than two and a half years ago: March 11, 2012. Earlier today, a commenter wrote to Alt Film Guide, claiming that the Martha Stewart featured in Doll Face, I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now,...

'Guys and Dolls' Gets a New Re-Release Poster
The film adaptation of Guys and Dolls directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz has never been a film that has sat right with me. I adore the musical with music and lyrics by the great Frank Loesser and book by Abe Burrows and Jo Sterling, yet there are many things about the film that bother me. Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra are both fit for the role of Sky Masterson, and having one of them step over into Nathan Detroit's shoes feels weird. They are two of the coolest guys around. Nathan is not cool. Nathan is a schlub who is in over his head. Sinatra is the epitome of cool. I can see why he was upset he was not cast as Sky. Also, the omission of quite a few of the songs causes problems for me. I can understand one or two being gone, but fivec "I've Never Been...
