Watch Toy Factory Project Make Live Debut at Telluride Bluegrass Fest
Image
This past weekend, under a canopy of stars in the depths of the San Juan Mountains in Colorado, Marcus King stepped up to the microphone and tore into a rendition of the Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See” at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

“I’m gonna take a freight train, down at the station, Lord,” King howled, his voice echoing out into the box canyon. “I don’t care where it goes.”

By the time King came around to the chorus, Charlie Starr, lead singer and guitarist for Blackberry Smoke,...

Marcus King, Charlie Starr Are Keeping Toy Caldwell’s Legacy Alive With New Supergroup
Image
Paul T. Riddle knows that he’s prone to shed a tear or two when the right moment strikes. He’s the first to admit he gets choked up during soft-hearted TV advertisements or when “Silent Night” comes across grocery store speakers during the holiday season.

So, on a Monday morning when Riddle, a longtime drummer and co-founding member of the Marshall Tucker Band, called to talk about his late bandmate Toy Caldwell, he got a little misty-eyed.

“Mine and Toy’s thing was the music,” says Riddle, a soft-spoken...

All-Star Allman Brothers Band Tribute Set to Return to New York

MusiCares Grateful Dead Tribute Is Big on Laughs (Thank You, Woody Harrelson), Love and Vibes
Image
A hollow, lifeless conference hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center is just about the last place you would expect to find a Grateful Dead tribute concert on a Friday night. But it was there that MusiCares put on a show for the ages, honoring the band at its Persons of the Year gala with founding members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart in attendance (drummer Bill Kreutzmann could not make the trip and delivered a message by video) and a slew of acolytes who understood the assignment.

Typically, the MusiCares dinner is a polite affair, with guests seated respectfully for most of the performances, save the all-star finale, a staple of the event. And that’s not to say that previous Person of the Year recipients — which include Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Barbra Streisand — didn’t have their own rabid fanbases in attendance. But the Deadheads just do things differently.

Alanis Morissette, Black Pumas, and Dawes will perform at the upcoming virtual charity concert, Set Break, which aims to bring awareness to mental health issues in the music industry, especially one year after Covid-19 brought the live entertainment sector to a halt.

The non-profit Backline, which connects those in the music industry with mental health professionals, is hosting the event, which will air April 10th on the Relix Channel on Twitch. The show will feature a mix of performances, public service announcements, and conversations about mental health, and interactive sessions involving yoga and meditation.

How a Digital Music Festival Without Major Headliners Made $100,000
Live From Out There — a subscription-based digital music festival — didn’t have superstars on the bill for its first weekend near the end of March. There were no special discount codes, no merchandise bundles, no particular gimmicks to draw attendees in. It still raked in $100,000 in one weekend.

Event organizer 11Eleven Group, an artist management company in Denver, Colorado, put on the fest with the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, a charitable foundation offering aid to musicians, after the coronavirus pandemic started shutting down live events. Artists who played in the...

Derek Trucks on Playing Live Before and After the Coronavirus Shutdown
Derek Trucks
As one of the few musicians to perform in New York just before and just after the coronavirus effectively shut down live music in the city, Derek Trucks witnessed the impact of the pandemic firsthand. On March 10th, the guitarist joined fellow former members of the Allman Brothers Band, including co-founder and drummer Jaimoe, for a 50th-anniversary tribute at Madison Square Garden. Billed as “The Brothers,” the lineup, which also featured guitarist and singer Warren Haynes and bassist Oteil Burbridge from the last Abb, ripped through nearly four hours of classic Allmans material,...

Allman Brothers Survivors Honor the Band’s Legacy at Fiery Tribute Show
Warren Haynes
At Madison Square Garden last night, Al and Mitch from Saratoga Springs, New York, came prepared. Both longtime Allman Brothers Band fans who had first seen the group in the Seventies, they had their tickets in hand for “The Brothers: Celebrating 50 Years of the Allman Brothers Band.” Yet like everyone around them, they knew this would not be a normal night for music. Al, a Labor Department employee, pulled out a baggie his wife had stuffed with wipes, which he was planning to use to dab his seat.

“Gregg was...

How Dead & Company Craft the Perfect Set List
GRATEFUL DEAD JERRY GARCIA PERFORMING AT BILL GRAHM'S WINTERLAND IN SAN FRANCISCO JAN.1979 © 1979 GUNTHER
Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir planned out only two things before each of the thousands of concerts they played together in the Grateful Dead: The song they would begin with and the song they would end with. Everything else was decided in the moment. “While Jerry was singing, I had plenty of time to think about the next tune that I was going to do,” says Weir. “And while I was singing, he had plenty of time to think about what tune he was next going to do. We developed a feel for that.

The Allman Brothers Band to Celebrate 50th Anniversary With Tribute Show
Warren Haynes
In 2014 — when the Allman Brothers Band decided the time had come to stop touring — the band briefly discussed a show at New York’s Madison Square Garden. In the end, the group opted for a series of farewell performances at another Manhattan venue, the Beacon Theatre, where they had long done residences.

But on March 10, about six years after the band’s goodbye, that dream of a Garden event will become a reality. To pay tribute to the band’s 50th anniversary year, the surviving members of the last Allmans lineup — drummer Jaimoe Johanson,...

Dead & Co. Raise Record $1.1 Million at Oceana Benefit; Stars Sing the Praises of John Mayer
John Mayer
“This is the third year and it’s kind of becoming a thing,” said manager and environmentalist Keith Addis, surveying the annual backyard benefit concert for Oceana, the seawater conservation organization, held at his home in the Los Feliz hills. “Sting was the first. [Don] Henley was the second. They’re all guys who have supported Oceana in the past so they’re pre-enrolled in the cause.”

This year’s talent? Dead & Company, who performed a seven-song set — perhaps the smallest (only 260 guests) and shortest in the band’s legendary history — on Sunday night (July 8) that included such favorites as “Dark Star,” “Shakedown Street” and “Franklin’s Tower.” Among the revelers in the crowd were Shiri Appleby, Kelly Lynch, Eli Roth and Rodger Berman, husband of fashion designer Rachel Zoe.

“Their manager, Bernie Cahill, is a really good friend of mine,” Addis said. “Normally, it takes me a couple of months to lock down the talent.
