- In the original script of Les Guerriers de la nuit (1979), he was supposed to play a Dingo gang member along with Kevin Bacon, but this was ultimately cut. John instead played the gas station man in the final version.
- Portrayed the role of Sid Vicious in the original play, which inspired the movie Sid & Nancy (1986). John was given a role in the film, although a bit part and not the lead.
