Marina Sirtis' Deanna Troi Was Scrapped From A Key Star Trek: Tng Episode

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Enemy", the Enterprise investigates a crashed Romulan vessel on a radioactive, storm-wracked planet called Galorndon Core. Several Enterprise crew-members are able to beam down and rescue one Romulan survivor, but the storms and radiation prevent everyone from returning. Geordi (LeVar Burton) is left behind, as is a second Romulan survivor named Bochra (John Snyder). At first, the injured Bochra claims Geordi as his hostage, but Geordi explains that the radiation will soon make them sick and that it would be wiser for them to work together to escape.

The bulk of "The Enemy" is devoted to their rescue. Up in orbit, Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) has to do some clever negotiating with a Romulan Commander (Andrea Katsulas), while Geordi and Bochra find ways to survive below. It's an okay episode.

It seems,...

Romulans Stopped Being Star Trek Villains In Tng
Image
Star Trek: Tng showed the Romulans' complexity: not all were villains, and some were sympathetic. Captain Picard's judgment of Romulans is continually challenged, and he eventually fought for their rescue decades later. In Tng, Romulans are portrayed as multi-dimensional characters.

The Romulans may be considered one of the United Federation of Planets' greatest enemies, but Star Trek: The Next Generation showed that not every Romulan is a villain. The Romulans made their debut in the excellent Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "Balance of Terror," which set them up as conniving villains, although the Romulan Commander (Mark Lenard) had honor. Since their introduction, the Romulans have been incredibly secretive and earned a reputation for being duplicitous. And while many Romulans have fallen into this category over the years, Tng showed that Romulans could be just as complex and nuanced as humans.

A Great Geordi Star Trek: Tng Episode Redeems One Of His Worst
Image
Geordi La Forge's romance mishap in "Booby Trap" is cringe-worthy but Geordi is redeemed in "The Enemy". "The Enemy" showcases Geordi's resilience and leadership while Picard and Worf make tough decisions. Star Trek: Tng delves into complex interpersonal dynamics with self-contained episodes and overarching plots.

Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) has one particularly embarrassing storyline on Star Trek: The Next Generation, but this great episode redeems him. As the Chief Engineer on the USS Enterprise-d, Geordi knows his way around a warp core, but he sometimes has trouble with interpersonal relationships. It's a bit telling that Geordi's best friend is the android Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner), who isn't exactly known for his social skills. Although La Forge plays a major role in many Tng episodes, only a handful of episodes give him center stage and reveal more about Geordi as a person.

Geordi La Forge's cringe-worthy "romance...

“It’s a problem with a lot of female characters, that a lot of them are guy-oriented or what they’re expressing or emoting is based on a guy’s position and a guy’s story.”

Florida Bill Would Stop Social Media Companies From Permanently Deplatforming Political Candidates
Image
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has a bill ready for signature that would stop social media companies from permanently kicking people off their platforms in the state.

The bill was passed Thursday by the Florida House 77-38 in favor of the bill, the Senate, 23-17. It makes it a crime to remove state political candidates from social media sites like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

Doing so would subject the companies to fines of $250,000 per day for statewide candidates. Local candidate removal would merit a fine of $25,000 per day.

The Florida bill may serve as a prototype for other states that will force the courts into a new evaluation of free speech on social media.

Under the Florida bill, seven days notice is required, warning users that they are about to be banned, offering them time to correct any issues. Suspensions of up to 14 days would still be allowed.

“What this bill...

‘Nw’ Teaser Trailer: Zadie Smith’s Epic Novel Gets Raw BBC Two Adaptation
NW (2016)
Beloved British author Zadie Smith has already seen one of her novels — the lauded 2000 offering “White Teeth” — turned into a television version, and now her “Nw” is getting similar treatment. The 2012 Women’s Prize for Fiction nominee will soon hit BBC Two as a 90-minute telepic that weaves together the stories of four childhood friends who are all struggling to overcome their past as they make their way through adulthood.

The story’s four protagonists — Leah Hanwell, Natalie (née Keisha) Blake, Felix Cooper and Nathan Bogle — all grew up together in North-West London (the “Nw” of the title) on the fictional Caldwell council estate, and have endeavored (in some very different ways) to break free of the world they first knew. While Natalie (Nikki Amuka-Bird) has managed to turn herself into a wealthy, successful barrister, her childhood pal Leah (Phoebe Fox) still struggles with both money and ambition. Chance encounters rule in the story,...
