Daft Punk Drummer Confirms Existence of Unreleased Studio Album
Image
One of Daft Punk’s collaborators during the Random Access Memories sessions has confirmed that the defunct French house duo are sitting on a bunch of unreleased studio material that would have served as the follow-up album to their 2013 opus.

Quinn, the mononymous drummer who performed on the majority of the tracks on Ram, spoke about his experience recording with Daft Punk in a recent video interview for the student-run media organization alt.news 26:46. “On Ram, I was pretty much the last person to come in on the record,” he said. “The next record [Daft Punk] were working on, I was the very first person.”

And so Quinn had the unique experience of getting to watch Daft Punk in some of their earliest songwriting and recording stages. “Thomas [Bangalter] had this keyboard, and actually had a computer program, and he was just experimenting,” he explained. “He was just hitting things. We were...

Daft Punk Announce Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition)
Image
Daft Punk are still keeping the good times rolling as they celebrate the 10th anniversary of their final studio album. After sharing an extended deluxe version of it earlier this year, the French house duo have announced Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition), a track-by-track reimagining of the record without a single drum beat.

While it’s hard to imagine most Daft Punk songs drumless, Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition) should pique interest in fans wanting to delve deeper into the layers of the band’s compositions. Pre-orders are ongoing now before the album is out in full November 17th.

See the artwork and tracklist for Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition) below.

Earlier this year, Daft Punk released a deluxe edition of Random Access Memories, featuring 35 minutes of previously unreleased music. In an interview corresponding with its release, Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter said he was “relieved” that the duo disbanded,...

Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories Returns to No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Albums Chart
Image
Daft Punk are getting lucky again: The French duo’s fourth and final studio album Random Access Memories has returned to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart, and now sits at No. 8 on the all-genre Billboard 200.

Per Luminate, Random Access Memories saw a 1,046% spike in equivalent album units in the US, in the week ending May 18th. The revived buzz comes thanks to Daft Punk’s new 10th anniversary edition of the album, which has now spent a grand total of 22 weeks at No. 1 including its original stint on the chart in 2013. Billboard adds that since 2001, only six albums have spent more time at No. 1 on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart — with the gold medal going to Lady Gaga’s 2008 album The Fame, with 175 weeks at the top.

The re-released edition of Random Access Memories includes nine previously unreleased tracks, including “Infinity Repeating (2013 Demo)” with Julian Casablancas + The Voidz,...

Davido Joins Konshens on Slippery Single ‘Boom Bang’
Image
The parade of collaborations between Jamaican dancehall acts and Nigerian afrobeats singers continues with “Boom Bang,” a sugary single from Konshens and Davido. The sticky core of this track is a sing-song jumble — “boom bum ba-dum bum bum ba-da-bum” — that descends in conjunction with a pinging bass line.

In recent years, these cross-Atlantic team-ups have become increasingly common: Try Vybz Kartel and Wizkid, Popcaan and Davido, Devin Di Dakta and Niniola, Kranium and Wizkid, Konshens and DJ Neptune and Joeboy, Konshens and Afro B, Popcaan and Runtown, and the Haitian artist Michael Brun and Mr.

Song You Need to Know: Michael Brun, ‘Baby Who’
Image
Shay Lia promises to pull off a stealthy seduction in “Baby Who,” a new track from the Haitian producer Michael Brun. Lia pushes her voice around in breathy gusts, ending her lines in sharply exhaled “ooohs”; the beat is unadorned and sneakily effective, sometimes just cracking, staggered percussion and melodic bass, with a maybe of shard of wah-wah-like guitar thrown in. Lia addresses her words to a potential partner who thinks she is “introverted” and “too shy.” “Baby,” she sighs, almost feeling sorry for the guy, “you don’t know who’s playin’ who.

Michael Brun Is Going on a National ‘Tour’ From One Single Concert Stage
Image
Since Covid began, artists have widely experimented with the livestreaming formula, trying to get their shows to stand out in an oversaturated ecosystem. Travis Scott, The Weeknd, and John Legend have gone the augmented reality route, taking to platforms like Fortnite and Wave to give gamified animated concerts, while shows like Verzuz are airing song battles. Now, Edm DJ and record producer Michael Brun is trying yet another new tactic — by limiting who can tune into his upcoming shows to specific cities.

For the first paid shows Brun is putting on since the pandemic started,...

Michael Brun Helps J Balvin Connect to the World on ‘Colores’
J Balvin
There are three immediate standouts on J Balvin’s new album Colores: “Azul,” with its relentlessly hummable hook written in part by the formidable Justin Quiles, “Gris,” which weaves pinprick guitar lines around a gnawing beat, and “Arcoíris,” which transforms Buena Vista Social Club’s classic “Chan Chan” into a modern dancefloor killer.

All three tracks feature contributions from the Haitian-born, New York-based artist-producer Michael Brun. Brun has been working with Balvin intermittently since 2018; he also introduced the Colombian superstar to Mr. Eazi, leading to their essential collaboration “Como un Bebe.

J Balvin and Mr. Eazi’s ‘Como Un Bebé’ Brings the ‘World to Africa’
J Balvin
On a visit to New York City last week, the Nigerian star Mr. Eazi visited a shisha bar in midtown Manhattan and heard “Como Un Bebé,” his recently released collaboration with J Balvin and Bad Bunny, three different times.

“They were playing the same thing when I went out to Montreal,” the singer says happily, lounging on a couch in the courtyard of his midtown motel. “I’m seeing videos on YouTube from [fans in] Panama, Colombia, Spain, Argentina. I feel this is the first time there is pure Afrobeats from Nigeria in the pop scene.

Michael Brun Is Taking Haitian Rhythms Global
In the early 2010s, during the heady days when Edm was clobbering its way into the global pop mainstream, you could have found Michael Brun holding down a set at any number of rave-centric festivals. But when he toured the U.S. in 2017, he was pedaling a very different kind of propulsion: Brun’s Bayo tour brought block-party flair and homegrown talent from his native Haiti to American listeners.

These shows were a creative reintroduction of sorts — the stony dance music that fills Anglo arenas receded, giving way to the more complicated,...

Walshy Fire Is Known for Dancehall. On ‘Abeng,’ He Turns Toward Afrobeats
Five years ago, Walshy Fire, the Jamaican producer known for the global-club-mishmashes he makes with the group Major Lazer, funded his own solo tour of Africa. In Kenya at one point, “the driver had fallen asleep and nobody could find him,” Walshy Fire recalls. “When they finally saw him, the first thing they said was, ‘you’re kimbo.’ I know that word in Jamaica to mean lazy — you’re asleep and spread out. It means the exact same thing in Kenya.”

“Those similarities made me begin to really think of...

Xoxo Review
Nightlife has notoriously been tricky for Hollywood to capture on film. Lean too hard into the chaos of it all, and you wind up with a nonsensical mess that barely hangs together as a coherent narrative. Steer too clear of the debauchery that it entails, and the resulting film is a toothless, flaccid imitation. More than most, Xoxo – the latest “Netflix original film” to hit the streaming service – tows that delicate line, delivering a fun (albeit lightweight) ensemble comedy/drama.

Like an Edm version of Love Actually, the film follows a disparate group of strangers as they make their way to Xoxo, the nation’s biggest festival devoted entirely to electronic dance music. Though a disclaimer at film’s end declares that its production is not affiliated with the real-life Portland-held event, it’s clear that this atmosphere was likely the inspiration for filmmaker Christopher Louie’s directorial debut.

TomorrowWorld 2015 Releases Official Aftermovie
TomorrowWorld will not be returning for another outing this year, and here to remind us of just how much that sucks is the official aftermovie from 2015’s edition.

Showcasing the 3-day event in all its glory, we’re treated to footage of many of the artists who played the fest back in September as well as the requisite crowd and scenery shots. While it doesn’t break the mold as far as aftermovies go, it does remind us of what a good time the festival is and how unfortunate it is that it won’t return in 2016.

You can check out the TomorrowWorld aftermovie in full above along with the tracklist below. Once you’ve done so, let us know if you had the chance to attend last year.

Exclusive: Euphoric Guest Mix From Luke Bond, Plus Listen To His Soldier Remix
2015 has been a big year for Luke Bond, and we’re only in March. After being nominated for “Beat Trance Track” at the IDMAs, he’s currently gearing up to release a new song on Garuda and also has a collab with Omnia coming soon on Armind. The British DJ is certainly on the rise, and with a new remix out today of Gareth Emery’s “Soldier,” we have much reason to sit up and take notice of him.

And that’s exactly what we here at We Got This Covered did. As big fans of the producer, we got in touch with him and asked about his work on “Soldier” and what he was going for with the remix.

Here’s what he had to say:

“I was really excited to remix Soldier because I had already fallen in love with the original and had a blast working with...

Are You Ready For The Veld Music Festival?
The sun has set on Bud Light Digital Dream Festival, but fear not Edm fans – the third incarnation of Veld Music Festival is set to hit Downsview Park in just over a week’s time. This year’s festival is primed to be bigger than any of its predecessors, too, with 2014′s line-up placing a huge focus on variety.

Smaller in scale than the expansive grounds of Ontario Place, Veld’s set-up brings forth two stages: the Main Stage and the Bacardi Stage. The Main Stage features a dazzling array of EDMs most prominent forces, inclusive of Dannic, Bingo Players, Tommy Trash, Dvbbs and W&W. The festival’s Main Stage also welcomes a plethora of the world’s top headliners to this year’s outing.

Martin Garrix makes his return to Toronto after destroying Uniun Nightclub earlier in the year, while Knife Party – two years removed from their last...
