Trademarks

  • A great jazz musician with his innovations in unusual musical times for the genre.

Trivia

  • "Take Five" (1959) was his biggest selling single. However, contrary to popular belief, he did not write it; that was done by his longtime musical partner and sax player Paul Desmond (who plays on the record).
  • In 1954, Brubeck was the second jazz musician to appear on the cover of Time Magazine. Brubeck found that embarrassing considering he considered Duke Ellington more worthy and was convinced that he himself was featured because he was white and told Ellington that.
  • Dedicated two album tracks to his children: "Kathy's Waltz" (from "Time Out" 1959) was inspired by his only daughter Catherine, and "Charles Matthew Hallelujah" (from "Time Further Out" 1961) was inspired by son Matthew. His record label, Columbia, misspelled Catherine as "Kathy" but the typo was left unaltered.
  • His father was a cattle rancher and his mother was a piano teacher.
  • Studied with composer Darius Milhaud. Brubeck's son, Darius Brubeck, in named for him.

Quotes

  • I'm beginning to understand myself. But it would have been great to be able to understand myself when I was 20, rather than when I was 82.
  • [about his most famous work,"Take Five"] There's a certain piece that if we don't play, we're in trouble.
  • One of the reasons I believe in jazz is that the oneness of man can come through the rhythm of your heart. It's the same anyplace in the world, that heartbeat. It's the first thing you hear when you're born--or before you're born--and it's the last thing you hear.
