1 Line from The Hobbit Inspired One of Thorin Oakenshield's Most Notable Features in the Films

Quick LinksThorin's Short Beard Was an Act of SolidarityDwarves Were More Important in The Hobbit Than in The Lord of the Rings

Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy established what the Dwarves of Middle-earth looked like. Those present in the prologue of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and at the Council of Elrond were all similar in appearance to Gimli; they had long hair, exaggerated facial features achieved through the use of prosthetic makeup, and most famously, large, bushy beards. They represented the classic, stereotypical image of fantasy Dwarves. Yet when Jackson returned almost a decade later for The Hobbit trilogy, he and the artists at Wētā Workshop broke the typical Dwarven mold. Some members of Thorin's Company, such as Balin and Glóin, would have fit right in alongside The Lord of the Rings' Dwarves, but others looked quite unusual by Dwarven standards.

The Only Actor Who Has Appeared In Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit & The Rings Of Power
Image
There are a lot of crossovers and connections within Middle-earth media. Even with completely separate projects, like Prime Video's "The Rings of Power" series and Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies, you can see the throughlines. Some are obvious, like the similarities in Balrog design between Jackson's movies and Prime Video's show. Others are more subtle, like the ways "The Rings of Power" tries to recapture the magic of Jackson's Middle-earth movies. And then there is the human link.

Overall, there isn't too much personnel crossover between the Warner Bros. and Prime Video Middle-earth universes. However, there is one actor who has managed to pop up in both of them: Jed Brophy. Even more impressive? He managed to land full-blown character roles in all six of Jackson Middle-earth films and has since shown up on "The Rings of Power." He's even developed a...

The 15 Most Well-Known Orcs in the Lord of the Rings Franchise, Ranked
Image
The Lord of the Rings is the most popular fantasy franchise of all time for its loving endeavor into the lives and cultures of many fantastical creatures, including Hobbits, Elves, and Dwarves. However, one of the races of Middle-earth that is pictured in a very different light is the Orcs, the vicious army that Sauron and Saruman use to spread darkness throughout the world.

Orcs are selfish and sadistic brutes presumably created by Melkor (Morgoth) in the First Age by corrupting Elves into dark and twisted versions of their former selves. The race bred amongst themselves at a rapid pace, giving rise to multiple populations spread across Middle-earth. Ever since their creation, the Orcs have served the Dark Lords Morgoth and Sauron for thousands of years. During that time, several Orcs have risen in infamy.

Updated on January 30, 2024, by Ajay Aravind: The creation of the Orcs lent itself to much academic debate,...

One The Lord of the Rings Actor Appeared in All Six Films and The Rings of Power
Image
Quick Links Jed Brophy Started With Small Roles in The Lord of the Rings Jed Brophy Was a Star of The Hobbit Trilogy Jed Brophy Returned to Middle-earth Almost a Decade Later

Though Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has made some allusions to Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, it takes place in a separate continuity and is not officially connected to Jackson's version of Middle-earth. As such, it has not carried over any actors from the films, instead recasting characters like Galadriel, Elrond, and Isildur. That does not mean that no actors from Jackson's films were involved in The Rings of Power -- they simply played different roles. For example, the three Nmenrean workers who brawled with Halbrand in the episode "Adar" were portrayed by Jason Hood, Mana Hira Davis, and Winham Hammond, who served as...

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Finale Review: Amazon Needs To Let Tolkien's Story Magic Do The Work
Image
Warning: This review contains spoilers for The Rings of Power's season 2 finaleThe Rings of Power is playing the long game. That's been clear since reports first emerged about creators Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne's five-season, billion-dollar plan for J.R.R. Tolkien's masterworks. To tell a story at this scale with this level of production value, planning is vital. But, part of what makes television so great is improvisation. Sure, it can lead to less-than-stellar results. But improvisation, or lack of a detailed map, has led to some of the best television ever created.

Why Sauron Doesn't Kill Galadriel In The Rings Of Power Season 2 Ending Explained By Lotr Star
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 finale.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power star Charlie Vickers explains why Sauron chooses to spare Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) in the season 2 finale. Created by Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, the hit Prime Video Lord of the Rings show returned for its sophomore outing in August, chronicling Sauron's rise to power during the Second Age. Sauron and Galadriel finally face off again in The Rings of Power season 2 finale in an epic duel, before which Sauron tries one last time to get her to join him as a ruler of Middle-earth.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Vickers delves into why Sauron didn't immediately kill Galadriel in The Rings of Power's season 2 finale, despite having the opportunity to. According to the actor, Sauron still saw a potential to get Galadriel on-side. After the events of the finale,...

Where The Hobbit's Dwarves Are During Lord Of The Rings (Are Any Alive?)
Image
Given that they were the heroes of The Hobbit movies, many fans wonder where the dwarves were during The Lord of the Rings. The prequel trilogy of Hobbit movies followed Bilbo Baggins on his first adventure out of The Shire as he joined a band of dwarves looking to reclaim their lost fortune. Given their history with the previous ring-bearer Bilbo Baggins, it may seem odd that none of The Hobbit dwarves lend Frodo a hand in The Lord of the Rings.

The dwarves are shown to be one of the prominent races in Middle-earth as they receive the Rings of Power alongside the elves and the race of man. However, Gimli is the only representation of the dwarves in the Lord of the Rings movies. Some of the heroes die during the journey in The Hobbit, but there are a lot of questions about what becomes to the ones...

‘M3GAN’ – The Most Interesting Things We Learned from the Blu-ray
Image
Every bit as outrageously entertaining as horror fans would expect from Housebound director Gerard Johnstone, Malignant writer Akela Cooper, and producers James Wan and Jason Blum, M3GAN danced into theaters the first week of January.

With a persuasive marketing campaign led by a buzzy trailer and a strong social media presence, the film performed beyond expectations, grossing $173.4 million worldwide on a $12 million budget. A sequel, M3GAN 2.0, was swiftly put into development for a January 2025 release.

Until then, viewers can now enjoy both the theatrical and unrated cuts of M3GAN on Blu-ray. The release also carries three making-of featurettes: “New Vision of Horror,” “Bringing Life to M3GAN,” and “Getting Hacked.” Despite running a scant 14 minutes in total, they pack in soundbites from a wide array of cast and crew members.

In addition to Johnstone, Cooper, Wan, and Blum, participants include actors Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Amie Donald, Ronny Chieng,...

M3GAN Actor Amie Donald Did Her Own Creepy Stunts, Including Running On All Fours
Image
Bringing the titular killer doll from "M3GAN" to life was a labor of love that combined puppeteering, animatronics, and a human actor in a doll mask, but it's that human performance that really takes the creation from mildly creepy to terrifying. (Read our review!) Actor Amie Donald, who was 11 years old at the time of filming, portrays the high-tech toy with a perfect mix of inhuman grace and jerky, robotic movements, and it turns out that much of M3GAN's physicality came directly from Donald, who did her own stunts and helped co-choreograph the dance sequence that has since gone viral on TikTok.

In interviews with the Los Angeles Times detailing the work that went into creating M3GAN, director Gerard Johnstone revealed that some of the most horrifying moments from the trailer were all Donald, who used her training as a gymnast to bring a unique physicality to her inhuman character.

The Latest Rings Of Power Episode Has A Game Of Thrones Connection
Image
You may have heard that there's a war currently brewing between two polar opposite fantasy juggernauts. Though (mercifully) airing new episodes on two different days of the week, "House of the Dragon" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" have been duking out for the last few weeks over the ongoing pop culture conversation. As much as some may draw interesting parallels between the two, many others can't help but focus on how one series is approaching its material far differently than the other. Genre fans enjoying both shows in equal measure get the last laugh here, but there's at least one other party serving as a bridge between both properties.

In addition to acting as prequels to much more well-known media, both share yet another indirect connection in the form of actor Joseph Mawle.

Initially cast back in the first season of the original "Game of Thrones,...

One Rings Of Power Actor Has Appeared In Every Live-Action Tolkien Adaptation — But You May Not Recognize Him
Image
When it comes to the most entertaining Easter eggs and tidbits sprinkled throughout "The Lord of the Rings," there are a handful of time-honored traditions that fans have passed down and made sure to turn into endearing memes. Did you know that Viggo Mortensen broke his toe after kicking a helmet? How about the fact that Sir Christopher Lee was the only cast member to actually know J.R.R. Tolkien? Oh, and then there are all the various cameos by director Peter Jackson throughout the trilogy.

But even the most knowledgeable viewers may have missed a specific fun fact that has linked every single live-action Tolkien adaptation together. Of all the talent that have participated in various Middle-earth stories over the last two decades, only a sole individual has left their fingerprints on each and every one on-camera. No, it's not mo-cap actor extraordinaire Andy Serkis or even director Peter Jackson,...

Orc Actor Has Beef with One Lord of the Rings Line He Wishes Was Off the Menu
Image
There are few movie franchises as iconic as Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings series. As beloved as the films are, they suffer from a certain number of inconsistencies that have baffled fans for years. One such inconsistency occurs during a scene in which Merry and Pippin have been captured by the Orcs, who debate over whether they should eat the little hobbits right on the spot.

An argument leads to the Orc Ugluk cutting off another orc's head, declaring, "Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!" Stephen Ure, who played the Orc Grishnakh, who first proposed eating the hobbits, admitted in an interview with Thrillist that while the scene has garnered an immense following within the Lotr fandom and through internet memes, the word "menu" makes no sense in the context of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth.

"There's a lot of stuff that doesn't really make sense.

The Hobbit Actor Blames Studio Interference for Trilogy's Poor Performance
Image
To this day, Peter Jackson's cinematic take on The Lord of the Rings trilogy of novels is considered one of the greatest adaptations of all time. Unfortunately, Jackson's follow-up offering from the land of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, in the form of The Hobbit trilogy, did not meet with the same success. Jed Brophy, who played the role of two orcs in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the dwarf Nori in The Hobbit films, weighed in on how the issue of studio interference ended up sinking the latter franchise.

"They [studios] get in the way... I may be speaking out of turn here, and probably if those people ever find me I'll get slammed, but I think that Warner Brothers kind of got in the way of Peter and The Hobbit... None of them are people that can actually look at a script and in their head imagine...

The Hobbit Star Admits That Studio Interference Affected The Trilogy
Image
The Lord of the Rings was, is and always will be viewed as a monumental achievement in cinema, one that will never likely even be replicated never mind bettered.

New Line Cinema took a massive gamble in giving the green light to three blockbuster movies shot simultaneously at a combined cost of over $280 million, especially when the books had long been deemed unfilmable and the fantasy genre itself had been struggling for decades. Almost $3 billion at the box office and seventeen Academy Awards later, though, including Best Picture and Best Director for closing chapter The Return of the King, the Middle-earth adaptations had blown any doubts so far out of the water that they’d hit the stratosphere as the trilogy cemented a place in history, and it’s now lauded as the apex of big budget filmmaking.

Unfortunately, however, lightning didn’t strike twice when it came to The Hobbit.

‘Killer Sofa’ Review
Stars: Jed Brophy, Sarah Munn, Stacey King, Harley Neville, Jim Baltaxe, Hamish Boyle, James Cain, James Dunlop, Sean Fleming, Michael Fowler, Grant Kereama, Adrienne Kohler, Angelica Thomas | Written and Directed by Bernardo Rao

The horror genre has produced all sorts of killers. And I don’t mean the Freddy’s and Jason’s of this world. What I am talking about is the rubber tyres, the snowmen, the drone, the beds and the several other strange objects and beings that kill people. Killer Sofa is the latest of this type of movie and I couldn’t wait to watch it.

First off, Killer Sofa really does live up to the hype I had given it myself. There are plenty of movies that know exactly what they are. They know they are silly, they know their audience and they know that aren’t making a movie that most people would consider a classic.

My Lover, My Lazy Boy Offers a Front Row Seat in 2019: A Preview
My Lover, My Lazy Boy is an upcoming horror comedy. From the twisted mind of director Bernie Rao (The Badlands), this film envisions a serial-killing armchair. A movie clip was released for the film a year ago. Currently, director Rao is completing production on the film, which is slated to show in film markets later this year. This is a New Zealand production. And, My Lover, My Lazy Boy stars: Jed Brophy (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies), Harley Neville (I Survived a Zombie Holocaust), Grant Kereama, Piimio Mei and many others. An unofficial trailer, for the film, is available here - along with a few other details. The official plot mentions a Dybbuk-possessed reclining chair. This chair becomes infatuated with its new owner (no seriously?!). Now, this recliner will do whatever it takes, including murder, to have her. Not even a Jewish Rabbi, nor a Voodoo sorceress can help.

The Dead Room Review
Given how easy it is to dramatize ghost encounters, the paranormal subgenre has become horror’s deepest mixed-bag of results. A good zombie movie requires flesh-rotting makeup, and slasher flicks demand artistically grotesque gore, but any average Joe or Jane can string together a few spiritual scares.

Slam some doors, shut some windows, make objects fly around a room – you know, that Paranormal Activity knock-off garbage – and finito! Just look at Jason Stutter’s The Dead Room. Costs are low because one rickety shack acts as the film’s single setting, and only three actors have to pretend something nasty is chasing them. Paranormal Activity made a cool profit doing the same, so why not The Dead Room?

Well, because it’s weightless, derivative, recycled genre boredom that makes even 75 minutes feel like a horror fan’s personal Hell.

When a spooked family flees their isolated New Zealand farmhouse, three...

Martin Freeman in Le Hobbit : La Bataille des Cinq Armées (2014)
Back in August, Warner Bros. announced an R-rated Extended Edition of The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies, which debuted on Digital HD last month and will be available on Blu-ray and DVD November 17. No details were given as to why this version was R-rated, but Youtube user Joshalots has posted a 15-minute video with new scenes from this edition, which helps illustrated why this was given the restrictive rating.
