‘Ghost Story’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: Craig Wasson, Alice Krige, Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., John Houseman, Patricia Neal, Jacqueline Brookes, Miguel Fernandes, Lance Holcomb, Brad Sullivan | Written by Lawrence D. Cohen | Directed by John Irvin

Four elderly gentlemen form The Chowder Society, a group in which they meet up to smoke cigars and tell chilling ghost stories in an attempt to scare each other. Hiding from a dark secret of their past, they use their stories to push it from their memories. When one of the member’s sons dies in strange circumstances though, it seems that their past transgressions have come back to haunt them in a soul that refuses to let go of her vengeance.

Ghost Story is based on Peter Straub’s novel, and we get to hear plenty from the author on this Blu-ray release. This gives a good insight into an eighties movie that feels very original.

The Gambler | Review
Kens and Dolls: Wyatt Revamps Toback Prose for the Plastic Age

Working steadfastly against the success of Rupert Wyatt’s up-do of The Gambler, which was originally a 1974 film starring James Caan, directed by Karl Reisz, and written by James Toback (based on semi-autobiographical elements), are two distinctive flaws. Firstly, Wyatt and screenwriter William Monahan fail momentously to live up to the gritty, unpleasantly self-sabotaging believability astutely evidenced in the original. Second, Mark Wahlberg’s overly determined performance careens ungraciously into flaunting bourgeoisie privilege in a role that doesn’t quite sit right on the shoulders of a celebrity still shadowed by his ridiculous early 90s persona. While Monahan wrote the role for which Wahlberg scored an Oscar nod eight years ago (2006’s The Departed), his hyper-intelligent, well-bred, successful novelist turned consummate gambler is more often than not unbelievable with Wahlberg in breathy, demure mode, rambling through a series of nicely written bits of misanthropy.

Jessica Lange Signs On For The Gambler
After lighting up the small screen on three seasons of FX’s freaky horror anthology series American Horror Story, acclaimed actress Jessica Lange has landed a supporting role in a remake of the 1974 James Caan-starring drama The Gambler. The film, which is also set to star Mark Wahlberg and Brie Larson, centers on a NYC English professor (Wahlberg) with a severe gambling addiction who gets in deep with villainous gangsters and ends up on the run. Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) will helm the remake, working from a script by The Departed writer William Monahan.

Lange will play the protagonist’s mother, a character described by Deadline as “rich and ostentatious.” It’s always a blast to see Lange sink her teeth into juicy, glamorous roles, as she’s been doing so excellently of late on American Horror Story, and it looks like The Gambler...

Jessica Lange Will Play Mark Wahlberg’s Mother
Jessica Lange
Jessica Lange has signed on to play Mark Wahlberg's put-upon mother in The Gambler, according to Deadline. The movie, directed by Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Rupert Wyatt, is a remake of the 1974 film of the same name, which starred James Caan as a college professor with a gambling addiction so out of control that he steals money from his own mom (played by Jacqueline Brookes). This remake has been kicking around in a few different iterations for what feels like forever, but now it's really happening. Lange and Wahlberg, together at last.

Rupert Wyatt
Mark Wahlberg and Director Rupert Wyatt Team Up for The Gambler
Rupert Wyatt
Mark Wahlberg and director Rupert Wyatt are in talks to join The Gambler remake at Paramount Pictures.

Last August, Todd Phillips signed on to direct, taking over for Martin Scorsese who had been attached to direct since August 2011. Leonardo DiCaprio was, at one point, attached to star, but he is no longer involved. Deals for both Mark Wahlberg and Rupert Wyatt are still coming together, and Rupert Wyatt does have an option on an untitled project at 20th Century Fox that he may still go ahead with.

James Caan starred in the original 1974 drama The Gambler, which followed a literature professor who is addicted to gambling and gets into hot water with some local gangsters. Paul Sorvino and Lauren Hutton co-starred in the film, which was directed by Karel Reisz.

William Monahan (The Departed) wrote the screenplay for the remake, with Irwin Winkler set to produce. No production schedule was given.

Todd Phillips Set to Direct The Gambler
Todd Phillips
Director Todd Phillips, who is set to go into production on The Hangover Part III soon, has lined up his first drama project with Paramount's remake of The Gambler.

We first reported on this project last August, when Martin Scorsese was attached to direct from a screenplay by William Monahan. The story centers a UCLA literature professor, who has a serious gambling addiction and gets in trouble with with gangsters. Our earlier report indicated that Leonardo DiCaprio was circling the lead role, but it isn't known if he is still involved.

Irwin Winkler, who produced the original, is back on board as a producer. It is believed that this could be Todd Phillips' next project after he wraps on The Hangover Part III, although that has not been confirmed.

The Gambler was released September 1974 and stars James Caan, Paul Sorvino, Lauren Hutton, Morris Carnovsky, Jacqueline Brookes, Burt Young, Carmine Caridi,...

James Caan in Le flambeur (1974)
Martin Scorsese and William Monahan Team for The Gambler
James Caan in Le flambeur (1974)
Don't get your panties in a bunch, Kenny Rogers fans! Director Martin Scorsese and writer William Monahan are remaking The Gambler. But rest assured, it's the 1974 drama from director Karel Reisz that starred James Caan as an English professor with a gambling problem. Not a reimagining of the great bearded one's time spent in the old west.

Leonardo DiCaprio is wanted for the lead role in this new version of The Gambler, though no deal is in place yet. Irwin Winkler, producer of the original, will be back to produce this new version as well.

William Monahan will base his screenplay on the short novel of the same name from Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The story finds this New York teacher so desperate to bet his meager wages that he ends up extorting money from his own mom and eventually has one of his students rig a basketball game.

Martin Scorsese is...
