Discoverys Ending Sets A Star Trek Record & Creates 2 New Admirals
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery's Series Finale - "Life, Itself"

Discovery Star Trek's series finale set promotion records for Burnham and Saru, both rising from Commanders to Captains to Admirals during the show's five seasons. Burnham and Saru's promotions showed a realistic portrayal of career advancement in Starfleet, with nearly every crew member on Discovery also moving up the ranks. The finale epilogue also introduced Captain Leto Burnham, Michael's son, continuing the tradition of notable promotions in Star Trek: Discovery.

Star Trek: Discovery's ending set a record for Star Trek promotions by creating two new Starfleet Admirals. Written by Kyle Jarrow and Michelle Paradise, and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 10, "Life, Itself", concluded the series by resolving Captain Michael Burnham's (Sonequa Martin-Green) hunt for the Progenitors' life-creating technology. Discovery's finale also ended with an emotional coda that jumps 30+ years into the...

Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead remake earns an R rating
Image
Nearly four years have gone by since it was announced that Treehouse Pictures was developing a remake of the 1991 Christina Applegate cult classic Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (watch it Here) that would be directed by Bille Woodruff (Beauty Shop and the Honey quadrilogy) from a screenplay by Chuck Hayward (Dear White People). All that was revealed about the project at the time was that it would be “a present-day retelling centered on a black family.” Then that’s the last we heard about it. Apparently it made its way through production while flying under the radar, though, because Film Ratings has revealed that the remake has already received its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board… and it’s a surprising one. While the original film was rated PG-13, the remake has earned an R rating for “teen drug use, language and some sexual references.”

Gattaca: 10 Reasons to Revisit Ethan Hawke and Jude Law's Underrated Sci-Fi Gem
Image
It’s been 26 years since Gattaca was released. This sci-fi film wasn’t a great box office success, and it was kind of forgotten, but its themes, performances, and style have made it a must-watch. This is the story of Vincent (Ethan Hawke), a man created by love in a world where babies are made genetically perfect. His genetic deficiencies make him an “invalid”, someone who can only be part of a maintenance staff, while he dreams of going to space. To do so, he switches identities with Jerome (Jude Law), a “valid”, who had an accident and is in a wheelchair, and who will give him his blood, urine, and other body samples, so Vincent can pass the daily tests at Gattaca, his place of work, and go to space.

Who In Strange New Worlds Fought In Star Trek: Discovery’s Klingon War & Who Didn’t?
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2.Star Trek: Discovery's Klingon war continues to cast a long shadow over Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, as many veterans are now serving aboard the USS Enterprise. Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) triggered the Federation-Klingon War in Discovery season 1, and it caused the deaths of a hundred million Federation citizens between 2256 and 2257. The threat of a second war with the Klingons would hang over the Federation until 2293, when the First Khitomer Accords were signed.

The fallout from Discovery's Klingon war hampered the efforts of Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) and the crew of the USS Enterprise to rescue LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) from Cajitar IV. As the planet was located on the fringes of Klingon space, it was a hotly contested location for the mining of the Dilithium needed to facilitate warp travel. The rescue mission to Cajitar...

Star Trek: Every Captain of the Enterprise
Image
Here is a breakdown of all USS Enterprise Captains across the various Star Trek movies, live-action series, comics, and books. Beginning with Star Trek: The Original Series, the Starship Enterprise has been at the very heart of the enduring sci-fi franchise created by Gene Roddenberry in 1966. Of course, the two most famous Captains of the Enterprise are James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), who shared the big screen together in 1994's Star Trek Generations, but Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is quickly achieving greatness in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Star Trek has introduced other successful spinoffs set on different starships like Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Discovery, as well as the space station-based Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. But, in the eyes of many fans, it isn't truly Star Trek unless it's about the Enterprise. The men and women who have commanded the Enterprise...

Every Star Trek Discovery Captain Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Star Trek: Discovery has featured a surprisingly high number of commanding officers over its first four seasons, but only one captain is the show's true leader. Part of the novelty of Discovery's original premise was that it would be the first Star Trek show where the captain was not the main character. Instead, the show would be told primarily from the perspective of Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), a former Starfleet commander who was tried and convicted of mutiny at the outset of the Federation-Klingon War in the mid-23rd century.

That approach opened up the show to try some new narrative tricks with the captain of the USS Discovery. The ship's captain's chair would go on to be inhabited by a number of different characters including Mirror Universe tricksters, misguided admirals, and even legitimate Star Trek icons. After the ship and its crew jumped to the far-flung future of the 32nd century,...

Discovery Season 4 Finally Broke The Show’s Weirdest Captain Trope
Image
One of the weirdest Star Trek: Discovery tropes about the USS Discovery's Captain finally ended in season 4. In the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her eponymous starship embark on a hunt for "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy." It promises to be a welcome reset toward galactic adventure following the dire cataclysms of Star Trek: Discovery's previous seasons.

Star Trek: Discovery had a strange habit of not settling on who was Captain of the Discovery in its first three seasons. The show began with the Disco controlled by Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs), who was eventually exposed as a sinister imposter from the Mirror Universe. Vice Admiral Katrina Cornwell (Jayne Brook) briefly sat in Discovery's Captain's chair, and Commander Saru (Doug Jones) also served as Acting Captain. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) commanded the Discovery in season 2, and Saru was promoted to...

Discovery Set Up Why Tng’s Enterprise Missed DS9’s Dominion War
Image
The reason the USS Enterprise missed Star Trek: Discovery's Klingon War could explain why Captain Jean-Luc Picard's (Patrick Stewart) USS Enterprise-e didn't lead the fighting in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Dominion War. The main conflict of the Dominion War coincided with the time frame of Star Trek Insurrection, when Picard and his crew protected the Ba'ku and the Briar Patch from being exploited by Starfleet Admiral Dougherty (Anthony Zerbe) and the Son'a. The war was ultimately won by the coalition of Romulans, Klingons, and the United Federation of Planets led by Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks).

Of course, the real-world reason why Picard and the Enterprise - the Federation flagship - didn't take the lead in the Dominion War is because the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast was making movies. The Dominion War took place entirely on DS9, and it was a storyline executive producer Rick Berman wasn't fond of.

Star Trek: Discovery Still Hasn't Had A Better Villain Than Lorca
Image
Star Trek: Discovery still hasn't topped its best villain, season 1's Captain Gabriel Lorca. The show took a lot of chances when it debuted on CBS All Access in 2017, from unwelcome changes to the Klingons to its serialized narrative structure. Plus, viewers had to wait until Star Trek: Discovery's third episode to see the titular starship and meet its captain.

Star Trek: Discovery bucked tradition by making its captain one of the main villains, but it paid off with Gabriel Lorca. Jason Isaacs's performance in his earlier episodes really sold the character's assumed identity as a flawed yet engaging hero. Then Lorca's unmasking in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, episode 12, "Vaulting Ambition," as the Mirror Universe counterpart to the real, missing Federation captain was a high point of the first season. The audacity and ambition of the Mirror Universe Lorca's long con, and his near-success achieving it, made him a great villain.

Star Trek Brings Back A Classic Starfleet Admiral Trope
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks' Season 3 Finale - "The Stars At Night"The finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 revisited a classic, and infamous, Starfleet Admiral trope: Vice Admiral Les Buenamigo (Carlos Alazraqui) was evil all along. In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3's finale, Admiral Buenamigo tried to force the decommissioning of the California-class starships and replace them with his creation, the Texas-class starships, which are fully operated by artificial intelligence. However, Ensign Samanthan Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) and Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) of the USS Cerritos foiled Buenamigo's scheme, and the corrupt Admiral was killed by his own USS Aledo when the robot ship went rogue and attacked Starfleet.

Perhaps Captain Freeman should have guessed Admiral Buenamigo's was evil because Starfleet has a long history of flag officers who turn violently insane. Buenamigo's motivation was simply career advancement; even after rising to Vice Admiral, he...

400 Female Writers & Showrunners Call On Major Studios To Take Action To Protect Workers In Anti-Abortion States
Image
More than 400 prominent female writers and showrunners sent a letter today to the heads of the major studios expressing their “grave concerns” about the companies’ “lack of specific production protocols” to protect their workers in anti-abortion states.

The letters, which state that “it is unacceptable to ask any person to choose between their human rights and their employment,” also demanded that the companies “pledge to discontinue all political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees immediately.”

Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.

The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

Lost in Space: Why the Third Time's the Charm
Ryan Britt Dec 26, 2019

Lost in Space made its big Netflix comeback count by going back to basics.

Editor's note: This story appears in our latest Den of Geek special edition magazine presented in parternship with Netflix. You can find more infomation on the issue here.

Before the Netflix reimagining premiered in April 2018, the idea that any new version of Lost in Space would be decent—much less excellent—seemed unlikely, if not outright impossible. Prior to the Netflix version, there were two reboots: one you’ve forgotten and another you’ve likely never seen—the underwhelming 1998 Lost in Space film from New Line Cinema and an unaired 2004 series directed by John Woo called The Robinsons. Like some of the Alpha Centauri colonists who failed to dodge the death-ray from a robot, both failed spectacularly. So, the challenge facing a new version of the Robinsons’ epic adventure was clear: How could...

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Emmy submissions: Will CBS All Access drama follow in Emmy winning footsteps of past ‘Trek’ series?
Wilson Cruz, Robinne Fanfair, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Blu del Barrio, Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, and Mary Wiseman in Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Will “Star Trek: Discovery” win Emmys this year? It would be a major breakthrough for CBS All Access, a new streaming service that earned its first nomination in 2017 when “The Good Fight” contended for its main title theme music. And it would be a major comeback for the “Star Trek” franchise: “Discovery” is the first “Trek” series since “Enterprise” ended in 2005. But the “Trek” shows have a strong track record with the television academy. Scroll down to find out what actors and episodes were submitted by the show across all Emmy categories save music composition (those races follow different procedures and don’t release public ballots).

The original “Star Trek” series ran from 1966-1969 and didn’t win any Emmys, but it was nominated 13 times, including twice for Best Drama Series (1967-1968). “Star Trek: The Next Generation” followed two decades later and aired for seven seasons from 1987 to 1994, during which...

‘Star Trek: Discovery 1×14 – The War Without, The War Within’ Review
Now that the Discovery is back from the Mirrorverse I’m sure I’m not the only one that wanted to see the return of Lorca (Jason Isaacs). It seems if that is going to happen we’ll have to wait, as this week’s Star Trek: Discovery decides to focus on the small issue of taking on the Klingon Empire.

The Discovery is back in their own universe back to their own universe, and Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Saru (Doug Jones) find themselves face-to-face with Admiral Cornwell (Jayne Brook), Sarek (James Frain) and a boarding party demanding Lorca be turned over. With the revelation of his apparent death, the focus soon turns on taking on the Klingon Empire.

With the pace that Star Trek: Discovery has been on in the last few episodes, it almost feels strange that this week things are slowed down. In reality though, this makes...

‘Star Trek: Discovery 1×08: Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum’ Review
In the first episode of Star Trek: Discovery, one thing that the Klingons made clear is the fact the Federation may say they come in peace, but many times they don’t. This week that peacefulness is put to the test on a new planet.

When U.S.S. Discovery takes a high priority mission to a planet called Pahvo they encounter a new lifeform. When the lifeform offer Saru (Doug Jones) a way to calm the unrest in his mind, it once again pits him against Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) who fights to keep them on mission.

One thing that I’m starting to notice with Star Trek: Discovery is that there is a cycle of episodes. We have the ship based ones, ones that feature more of the Klingons, then ones that question the Prime Directive and how the crew of Discovery can manage to bend the rules around it.

‘Star Trek: Discovery 1×06 – Lethe’ Review
Now that we are six episodes into Star Trek: Discovery it is easy to pick out the interesting and fan favourite characters. With this week’s episode of Discovery, it we start to get into moments that shape these characters for what is to come.

With Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif) now a part of the crew, people are intrigued to find out more about him. For Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) though, her thoughts are off the ship as Sarek (James Frain) calls out for help. While she is allowed to go search for him, Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs) is visited by Admiral Cornwell (Jayne Brook) who is worried about his tactics.

While fan favourites Michael, Tilly (Mary Wiseman), and Stamets (Anthony Rapp) get a lot of focus on Star Trek: Discovery, it seems now that Ash Tyler is going to be another to have a connection with Michael. The fact that...

Star Trek: Discovery episode 4 review - The Butcher's Knife Cares Not For The Lamb's Cry

Discovery delivers another great modern Star Trek episode in its fourth instalment. Spoilers and geeky spots ahead in our review...

1.4 The Butcher's Knife Cares Not For The Lamb's Cry

What a title this episode has. If Discovery has done nothing else, it’s brought back the spirit of the original series’ episode titles, which were essentially “how grandiose and Shakespearean can we be in fewer than 10 words”. Turns out: very.

Of course, it’s not completely without meaning. There are lots of butcher’s knives in this episode, and lots of lambs crying. Metaphorically, of course. The most Star Trek thing about this episode was Burnham’s insistence that science and compassion prevail over, like, randomly shooting stuff in the face.

CBS All Access’s newest iteration of “Star Trek” continues to spark with imagination: In “The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry,” Burnham makes a big discovery, the Klingons fight both Starfleet and each other, and a character we barely met last week meets a tragic end.

Soul Windows: Burton Returns to the Biopic with Flagging Interest

Long judged as a director clearly intent on recycling the same motif, themes, and styles, generally with the same few cast members, Tim Burton throws an interesting curveball with his latest film, Big Eyes, a reenactment of the art world Keane scandal of the 1960s. Scripted by Burton’s Ed Wood (1994) scribes, the title that remains the sole point of comparison with which his latest will be compared, many will be disappointed to find a rather basic film, devoid of Burton’s customary flourish or that earlier, celebrated title’s ingenuity. And though the film’s greatest challenge will be to breathe under the weight of its creators’ own reputations, it’s a likeable recapitulation of 1950s era America and the strange mutations that occur involving those humans attempting to buck the wrongly conditioned trappings of gender based social mores.

Private Practice Exclusive: A.J. Langer Has Eyes For [Spoiler Alert]
A.J. Langer
My So Called Life alumna A.J. Langer is joining Private Practice in a recurring role, TVLine has learned exclusively.

There’s just one problem: It’s anyone’s guess who she’s playing.

Her character, Erica. “will be someone from one of the Oceanside doctor’s pasts,” is all an ABC rep would say.

Perhaps Shonda Rhimes is staging an onscreen reunion between Langer and her former Eyes costar Tim Daly? It’s doubtful considering A) Pete is a widower and B) we already met a woman from his past in Season 2: Meg Porter (played by Jayne Brook).

Episode Recap: Castle - 1.02: "Nanny McDead"
Castle (Nathan Fillion) has to sign waivers to work with Beckett (Stana Katic) , so that no one; including "My lifeless body, can sue the city." Beckett just wants to shoot him now. That's another comment about wanting to shoot him, last episode she said she has a gun. Must be trigger happy. She has a case and he's got paperwork. Now did she seriously think she could elude him, it's like Castle's got eyes and ears everywhere. A nanny is found in the dryer and Beckett notices the bleach bottle and blood on the floor. He's already there, as Castle says she thought she'd given him the slip. Never. And refers to the Db as 'Nanny Mcdead'. Beckett is his inspiration and he doesn't know when inspiration will strike (usually at the end of the episode when he actually gets to write.) Well inspiration is a slow process and...
