[Note: With the film now set for release in the Us this week, here's a re-posting of our review of Seeds, from the films screening at Frightfest back in 2018]

When his increasingly depraved behaviour spirals out of control, Marcus retreats to his family home along the New England coast. But instead of finding solace, Marcus is haunted by his darkest fears and deepest desires. Could something be underneath the bed, lurking? Is he losing his mind or has something terrible burrowed deep within him? Incubating. Waiting until the climate is right. Marcus must fight to save his crumbling sanity and protect Lily, his beloved niece from a monster that lies in wait.

Is there or isn’t there a monster in the house? Or is the “monster” a manifestation of the monster that is Marcus, a man whose escapes the troubles of one sexual act and walks right into another…...

The Shivering Truth (2018)
‘The Shivering Truth’: Watch the First Episode Before It Airs on Adult Swim
The Shivering Truth (2018)
“The Shivering Truth” premieres next week, as part of the Sunday night block on Adult Swim. But for anyone adventurous enough to take a chance on a stop-motion descent into some dark territory of the human psyche, IndieWire is presenting the first episode in advance of the series premiere.

This quarter-hour creation comes from Vernon Chatman, the co-creator of “Wonder Showzen” who also helped bring “The Heart, She Holler” to Adult Swim back in 2011. Chatman also voices characters in the series, joining a voice cast for this debut episode that also includes Jon Glaser, Kevin Breznahan, Miriam Tolan, and Ivy Chatman.

As part of a certain amount of due diligence, this intro is the time to reiterate that this is an episode of TV that will likely make some viewers uncomfortable. Anyone expected a traditional heartwarming stop-motion special is in for a deep, profound surprise. (To wit: A flipbook sent...

Watch: A.I. Co-Written Sci-Fi Short 'Progress Bar' by Peter McCoubrey
"These days, you think you met your soulmate. Next thing you know, they change their number and steal all your stuff." Can artificial intelligence actually write intelligent scripts? Or at least – interesting scripts? Progress Bar is the latest film partially created by artificial intelligence (the short film Sunspring was the first one). This experimental short film about relationships "attempts to harness the inherent absurdity of dialogue generated by A.I. by placing it within the confines of a more traditional (human-written) narrative film structure." Starring Jennifer Kim, Lucy Walters, and Kevin Breznahan. Made by the same team behind the other shorts The Grey Matter and Therefore I Am that we've featured previously. Worth a watch. Thanks to Pete for the tip on this. Original description from Vimeo: "In a near future, a woman navigates a virtual customer service call via her own avatar and digital assistant." Progress Bar is directed by filmmaker Peter McCoubrey,...

Adrien Brody in Noir Crime Thriller 'Manhattan Night' Official Trailer
"Some secrets should never come to light." Or maybe everyone prefers that kind of creepy tagline better? "No reporter can resist a siren." Lionsgate has unveiled a trailer for a crime thriller called Manhattan Night, a sort of contemporary noir starring Adrien Brody as the pulp writer stuck in the middle of a crazy mysterious story of sex and lies and deceit. The cast includes Jennifer Beals and Yvonne Strahovski, plus Campbell Scott, Linda Lavin, Steven Berkoff and Kevin Breznahan. The trailer sets up the plot better than any text explanation can - this nice family man meets a "seductive stranger" and gets wrapped up in his own twisted story. This seems to be cutting it close to being straight-to-tv quality, so watch out. Here's the official trailer for Brian DeCubellis' Manhattan Night, direct from YouTube: Based on Colin Harrison's acclaimed novel Manhattan Nocturne, Manhattan Night tells the...

Winter’s Bone Front-Runner at Film Independent Spirit Award 2011
“If you had a fleeting chance to escape a life of drudgery and poverty, of living hand-to-mouth in a closeknit rural community, would you take it?”

That’s exactly the thing with Winter’s Bone, an adaptation of Daniel Woodrell‘s 2006 novel of the same name.

The film was written and directed by Debra Granik, and stars lovely Jennifer Lawrence.

Winter’s Bone stars Lawrence as an Ozark teen named Ree Dolly, the sole guardian to her younger siblings, who is forced to search for her missing father in order to save her family’s home.

One of the people she goes to is Uncle Teardrop, played by John Hawkes, an intimidating relative who may have the answer to her father’s whereabouts.

“I think she was strong and stubborn and determined and she had a heart that was almost too big for her,” Lawrence said, describing her character, and...

Review: Winter’s Bone
This is the Pure Movies review of Winter's Bone, directed by Debra Granik and starring Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Dale Dickey, Garret Dillahunt, Shelley Waggener and Lauren Sweetser. Notable for scooping the Grand Jury Prize for best dramatic offering at this year's Sundance Film Festival, like previous winner Frozen River, Winter's Bone is a low-budget slice of American indie filmmaking that revolves around a desperately poor, rural community. Filmed in the Ozarks in Southern Missouri, it follows 17-year-old Ree (Jennifer Lawrence) in her attempts to hold her family together. Her father has jumped bail and disappeared. Her mother has suffered a nervous breakdown, leaving Ree alone to care for her younger siblings.

This week's new films
Winter's Bone (15)

(Debra Granik, 2010, Us) Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan. 100 mins

What No Country For Old Men did for west Texas, this striking landscape thriller does for Missouri's Ozark mountains. This is no country for poor women: an insular rural community clouded by drugs and patriarchy where they do things their way. So when Ree learns her father's skipped bail, and the family home was his security, she must ask difficult questions in dangerous places – chiefly among her extended outlaw family. Tough suspense, documentary-like observation and character drama are perfectly balanced.

I'm Still Here (15)

(Casey Affleck, 2010, Us) Joaquin Phoenix, Sean Combs, Anthony Langdon. 107 mins

What was Joaquin thinking? This film won't clear that up, but it at least shows you what he was doing: taking drugs, falling out with friends and the movie biz, rapping badly and descending into mumbling incoherence – apparently.

The Other Guys (12A)

(Adam McKay, 2010, Us) Will Ferrell,...

Film review: Winter's Bone
With an outstanding performance from Jennifer Lawrence, Winter's Bone is a backwoods classic, says Peter Bradshaw

Hillbilly-gangster-realist-noir is a genre new to me, and Winter's Bone may be the only example. Starting on a downbeat note of indie miserablism, it builds inexorably through successive stages of tension to an extraordinary finale of horror: a white-trash nightmare, featuring a chainsaw and a horrible visit to a moonlit lake. But it is all given unironic dignity and power due to the outstanding lead performance from 20-year-old Jennifer Lawrence as Ree, a young woman who must take on some scary neighbourhood types to protect her family.

The action takes place in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, where teenage Ree is effectively the only sentient adult in her household: her mother has become catatonic with depression and her younger brother and sister need looking after. Ree is considering joining the Us army, on account...

Winter's Bone (2010)
Directed by: Debra Granik

Written by: Debra Granik, Anne Rosellini, Daniel Woodrell (novel)

Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Dale Dickey, Garret Dillahunt, Shelley Waggener, Lauren Sweetser

Jessup Dolly has had a long history with meth amphetamines in the small community of the Ozark Mountains. The man's a cooker, and a good one; as such, he's cultivated a deep involvement with the criminal underground of his small impoverished town.

He's also disappeared while out on bond. His daughter, Ree Dolly, soon finds that her dad had used their ancestral home as collateral for bail. If she can't find her father, alive or dead, then the small family - which includes her two young siblings and her nearly catatonic mother - will be put out of their home and onto the street with barely a dollar to their names.

While Jessup was an addict and a criminal, Ree has kept herself clean.

Winter’s Bone Review
Winter's Bone Directed by: Debra Granik Written by: Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini (screenplay), Daniel Woodrell (novel) Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Dale Dickey Debra Granik, director of the 2010 Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner, Winter’s Bone, exhibits a rare confidence in her vision that nearly supersedes criticism. Her film is a portrait, and her brush-strokes are so self-assured that I suspect she could provide two diametrically opposed interpretations and pass a polygraph test with flying colors each time. In a way, that’s what nags me about it. My stubborn inclination, despite the potent, pea-soup atmosphere of dilapidated shacks and leering, shadowy characters, is to dismiss it all as 'almost great.' The story is kick-started by a strong, simple premise — that 17 year old Ree (Jennifer Lawrence) must track down her father who, having put the family house up for a bail bond, must be returned by...

Exclusive: John Hawkes Takes Us Inside Winter's Bone
John Hawkes on playing Teardrop in Winter's BoneJohn Hawkes is one of those actors that might not have the name recognition of the A-list Hollywood elite, but his performances have certainly created a lasting career in and out of the Hollywood system. From big screen performances in films like Identity, Me and You and Everyone We Know, Miami Vice and American Gangster along with roles like Sol Starr in Deadwood and Dustin Powers in Eastbound & Down, Hawkes is certainly a diverse performer in a variety of different genres. Hawkes returns to the silver screen this weekend playing the rugged character Teardrop in the new film Winter's Bone, which opens in limited release on June 11. I recently had the chance to speak with this talented actor over the phone and here's what he had to say.

Can you talk about your first reactions to this script and how you came across this project?...

By the time we hit the November time frame this list of 87 total films will most likely be whittled down to what I assume will be about 30 or so titles of actual contenders. The real question is just how many from this preliminary list will be left standing once we get to that point? 20? 15? Less?

No matter, this is all for fun anyway as well as taking a moment to introduce you to a few films you may not have known were coming out this year. After all, isn't it better to be "in the know" so you can impress your friends?

In today's fourth and final installment we have the final 13 individual films to make my preliminary list followed by the ten films I can currently see as Animated Feature Film contenders as...

"Winter's Bone" cast talks to MakingOf about their award-winning film
link: http://makingof.com/posts/watch/1297/the-cast-of-winter-s-bone

Director Debra Granik's film "Winter's Bone" won big last month at the Sundance Film Festival. Not only did the independent movie secure distribution with Roadside Attractions, it also was awarded the dramatic competition grand jury prize. The ensemble cast sat down with MakingOf to share how they got involved with the project, what filming in the Ozarks was like and how they each connected with Granik and their characters.

The film, which tells the story of an Ozark Mountain girl who hunts down her missing father in hopes of saving their home, was adapted from the Daniel Woodrell novel of the same name. The cast includes Jennifer Lawrence, Dale Dickey, Lauren Sweetser, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Tate Taylor, Casey MacLaren, Cody Brown and Charlotte Lucas.

Debra Granik's thriller 'Winter's Bone' gets release date
Winter's Bone, recipient of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival’s Dramatic Competition Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, will get a June 2010 release from Roadside Attractions. This thriller (based on the novel by Daniel Woodrell) was directed by Debra Granik (Down to the Bone) and adapted for the screen by Granik and Anne Rosellini.

17 year-old Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) sets out to track down her father, who put their house up for his bail bond and then disappeared...

If she fails, Ree and her family will be turned out into the Ozark woods. Challenging her outlaw kin’s code of silence and risking her life, Ree hacks through the lies, evasions and threats offered up by her relatives and begins to piece together the truth.

The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Dale Dickey, Garret Dillahunt, Sheryl Lee and Tate Taylor. It was filmed entirely...

Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone (2010)
Faces You Should Remember at the "Winter's Bone" Premiere
Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone (2010)
Contrary to the subject matter of their film, the cast of "Winter's Bone" were all smiles at the Sundance premiere of the film at the Eccles Theater in Park City. Joining director Debra Granik on the red carpet were the film's stars Jennifer Lawrence, Dale Dickey, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Casey Maclaren and Lauren Sweester. Granik has an eye for talent -- her last film, "Down to the Bone," provided a breakout role for Vera Farmiga -- so these names and faces are worth remembering.

"Winter's Bone" tells the story of Ree Dolly, a young woman caring for her siblings and ailing mother in the Ozarks. When Ree's father is arrested for cooking meth, he puts the family home up for bail and then flees the authorities. To keep her family from being forced out in to the cold, Ree must pursue her father through treacherous back country and confront...

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Eleven
One month, 280 films and 70,000 words later, my guide to the films of 2010 is now complete. I hope you've enjoyed reading it all - it's been utterly exhausting but an ultimately rewarding venture I've been single-handedly pulling together since early December. If you have liked it, my only request is that you help spread the word about it now that it's all done.

If you're a fellow blogger or site owner, please give it a plug on your site. If you're a reader, give it a mention on Facebook, Twitter or other online places you might venture. A lot of effort went into this, the greatest reward so far has been seeing it talked about and hearing your reactions. I'm glad many of you have gotten a lot of use out of the previous pages, so I hope you enjoy this final part:

Vincere

Opens: 2010

Cast: Filippo Timi, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Corrado Invernizzi,...

Sundance Film Festival Details Released
I feel a special bond with the Sundance Film Festival. Not because I’ve been there, but because the guy in charge of it this year, John Cooper, shares my name. Because we share this bond, I feel that I’m able to take license in referring to the man as Coop for the rest of this article.

For the annual event held in Park City, Utah from January 21-31, thousands of films are submitted and screened — this year, 3,724 films were viewed by the festival’s ten programmers. I wonder when they slept.

Coop has high hopes for the festival as a whole:

“We may even be going into a golden age for independent films, in that the technology will make it possible for the films to be made and for audiences to see them. The industry is going through a major evolutionary stage right now, there’s no doubt about that,...

Sundance Unveils 2010 Competition Lineup
The Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineup of films playing in competition from January 21 through January 31, 2010. The early fest typically debuts some of the best films the year has to offer, like 2009’s Precious, (500) Days of Summer, and Moon.

I’m bummed I won’t be in Park City, Utah next month because the lineup looks great, and these are just the films playing in competition. Here’s a few that stood out to me:

The Allen Ginsberg trial film Howl starring James Franco, a documentary by Alex Gibney (a truly great filmmaker) on Jack Abramoff, Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious, a doc about Joan Rivers, the directorial debut of “How I Met Your Mother” star Josh Radnor titled Happythankyoumoreplease (I wrote a glowing script review of it here), Hesher with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, and Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

2010 Sundance Film Festival Line-up Unveiled
Photo: Sundance Today the Sundance Institute announced the films that will be in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in both the U.S. and International dramatic and documentary categories. The festival will run from January 21-31 in Park City, Utah. There are a few changes this year as there will be no opening-night picture and the festival will take select festival films to eight cities during as the fest plays out.

Last year notable films such as this year's major Oscar contenders Precious and An Education debuted at Sundance 2009 as did audience and critical favorite (500) Days of Summer.

As for this year's crop I have highlighted a few titles among the list below in red, but I have primarily done so considering the names attached to the pictures not necessarily based on any advanced buzz I've heard around any of the films. Names to look out for include Ryan Gosling,...

Competition Line-up Announced for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival
The Sundance Film Festival is where some of the great films of the year will get their first viewings, and if you don’t believe me, here’s just some of the great films this year that made their debut at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival: Precious, World’s Greatest Dad, Big Fan, Bronson, Moon and even (500) Days of Summer, which I didn’t care for but made a big splash.

The festival is where buzz starts happening and now Sundance has released the list of which films will be in competition for 2010. Keep in mind that there are plenty of other films which play out of competition and can be just as great. But some of the big names fighting for the crown are the Allen Ginsberg obscenity trial film Howl starring General Hospital’s James Franco, Hesher starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo’s directing debut Sympathy for Delicious,...

Sundance unveils 2010 lineup
Robert Redford
Although the Sundance Film Festival might have tried to wring some extra sunshine from its selections last year, the 2010 lineup looks to be back to its typical mirthless self. One could say it has gone from "You gotta give 'em hope" to "You gotta give 'em mope."

"That's our filmmakers," festival director John Cooper said with an amused mix of pride and resignation. "There's some lightness in here somewhere."

Yes, it's wedged back behind the assassinations, political corruption, war carnage, crumbling educational system and Khmer Rouge revelations. The fest, which runs Jan. 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah, might start to feel like 11 Days of Glummer.

But perhaps that's to be expected. The implosion of the independent distribution system amid the ever-present threats of a maimed economy and two wars has provided festival organizers and filmmakers an opportunity to cut loose and follow their probing passions,...
