His family are distantly related to Sir Walter Scott and through the Ogilvy clan to Angus Ogilvy. His father was a major in the army, his mother worked for the Allied Control Commission and his brother Nigel is a Hong Kong solicitor. Rory was educated at Wellington College and Kings College, London obtaining an honors degree in German and French. He decided to become an entertainer after seeing Rowan Atkinson at the Edinburgh Festival and started out by imitating his teachers to amuse his school pals.
