MTV Documentary Films Nabs Sundance ‘To Catch a Predator’ Doc ‘Predators,’ Plans Big Awards Push
Image
MTV Documentary Films has acquired worldwide rights to the acclaimed documentary “Predators” after the film’s debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January. The film, from director David Osit, examines the complicated legacy of the Dateline series “To Catch a Predator,” specifically prodding the ethical dilemma at the center of the show and chronicling its downfall.

MTV Documentary Films will release the film theatrically this fall and mount an aggressive awards campaign before its launch on Paramount+ with Showtime. The collaboration comes after the successful partnership between MTV Documentary Films and Sweet Relief Productions following the critically-acclaimed “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” Paramount Global Content Distribution will be distributing “Predators” outside the U.S.

“I’m thrilled to work with MTV Documentary Films and am humbled to have ‘Predators’ included in their excellent slate of award-winning, incisive and thoughtful nonfiction programming. I’m so glad that MTV Documentary Films is...

Sundance Documentary ‘Predators,’ an Exposé of ‘To Catch a Predator,’ Sells to MTV Documentary Films
Image
“Predators,” a look into the rise and fall of the pedophile-baiting series “To Catch a Predator,” has sold to MTV Documentary Films following its debut at Sundance.

David Osit directed and produced the documentary, revolving around the hidden-camera reality TV show that ran on NBC from 2004-2007. On the “Dateline” spinoff series, journalist Chris Hansen worked in coordination with law enforcement while conducting sting operations that exposed adult men who were hoping to have sex with minors. The film raises questions about ethical lines in journalism as well as the public’s obsession true-crime stories.

MTV Documentary Films will release the film theatrically this fall. In a release announcing its purchase, the company said it plans “an aggressive awards campaign.” The movie will then stream on Paramount+ with Showtime.

MTV Documentary Films Acquires Sundance Doc ‘Predators’
Image
MTV Documentary Films has picked up world rights to David Osit’s Sundance doc Predators.

The film digs into Dateline’s popular and controversial series To Catch a Predator. MTV will release the film theatrically this fall and intends to campaign for awards before launching on Paramount+ with Showtime.

To Catch a Predator was a popular television show designed to hunt down child predators and lure them to a film set, where they would be interviewed and eventually arrested.

Predators had its world premiere in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. It will debut internationally at Cph: Dox in Copenhagen before heading on the festival circuit.

“I’m thrilled to work with MTV Documentary Films and am humbled to have Predators included in their excellent slate of award-winning, incisive, and thoughtful nonfiction programming,” Osit said in a statement. “I’m so glad that MTV Documentary Films...

‘¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!’ Director Says Matt Stone Is the Person Trey Parker Most Wants to Make Laugh
Image
After 30 years of partnership, the two South Park creators’ #1 goal is still to crack each other up — I guess they’re good buddies, guy.

When multiple genius artists have been in a state of constant collaboration for even a fraction of the time that Trey Parker and Matt Stone have spent making their beloved TV shows, movies, Broadway musicals, video games and Denver-area dinner entertainment experiences, the usual expectation is that the weight of massive success, wealth and expectations will drive the partners to despise each other, à la The Beatles, Monty Python or Siskel and Ebert. Thankfully, the duo that got paired up for a partner project while they were both enrolled in a film course at the University of Colorado Boulder has shown no sign of the internal strife that’s broken up so many incredible artistic collaborations through the years, and, if blowing $40 million to fix up...

This Was Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s One Note for the Casa Bonita Documentary
Image
If you love stories about wealthy cartoonists pouring millions of dollars into Mexican novelty restaurants riddled with building code violations, boy do we have the movie for you. The new documentary ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor! chronicles South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s efforts to renovate Denver’s giantest, pinkest eatery, in defiance of all common sense and financial logic.

Play

The movie is undoubtedly funny, engaging and even heartwarming, but it also feels like a fairly calculated promotional tool for the restaurant which, perhaps not coincidentally, opened to the public in the very same week that the documentary was released.

According to the film’s director, Arthur Bradford, there’s a very good reason for this. Speaking with The Wrap, Bradford revealed that the project began, not as a feature film, but as an “online marketing video” for Casa Bonita, one that could be shown inside the...

The Casa Bonita Documentary Sidesteps the Restaurant’s Biggest Controversy
Image
While securing reservations to Casa Bonita is about as easy as scoring front-row tickets to an alien autopsy performed by Taylor Swift, at least we can all get a taste (not literally) of what it’s like to visit the novelty Mexican restaurant, thanks to the new documentary ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!.

The acclaimed doc is now available on Paramount+, the streaming home of South Park and Frasier Crane’s nonstop bullshit. It’s certainly an entertaining and funny account of Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s efforts to re-open the troubled venue, but it’s also surprisingly sincere and even heartwarming, ending on a bittersweet note that oddly parallels the classic South Park episode that made the restaurant world famous.

The doc also largely avoids the most highly-publicized controversy surrounding Casa Bonita 2.0: the issue of employee compensation.

In some ways, this omission may not be all that surprising,...

‘¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!’: How Trey Parker’s Obsession Turned an ‘Online Marketing Video’ Into a Real Documentary
Image
When “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker thought they might buy the beloved Denver restaurant Casa Bonita, one of the first calls they made was to director Arthur Bradford. The two Comedy Central powerhouses have worked with the filmmaker for nearly a decade and a half, going back to when he directed their 2011 making-of documentary, “Six Days to Air.”

“Whenever they had a new project or just something that seemed interesting to film, I was always after them to let me do it,” Bradford told TheWrap. The director is currently on the set of Stone and Parker’s upcoming live-action comedy with Kendrick Lamar, working on another making-of film.

Initially, “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” was envisioned to be an “online marketing video” that could be shown as people waited for their food. But as Bradford and his long-standing photography director P.H. O’Brien worked on the project, it became...

Casa Bonita Documentary From South Park Creators Gets Streaming Release
Image
While South Park has managed to take creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone on an incredible journey throughout the years, the duo recently embarked on a different kind of excursion thats explored in the new documentary Casa Bonita Mi Amor!, which has just set its digital release date. Per IndieWire, the Arthur Bradford-directed doc will hit Paramount+ on Wednesday, October 2, following a limited theatrical release earlier this month that saw it take in $125,000 across 14 theaters.

The film traces Parker and Stones journey to revive Lakewood, Colorados legendary eatery Casa Bonita, which is dubbed by many to be the "Mexican Disneyland of Restaurants." First opened in 1974, the 52,000 square foot venue became known for its many attractions, which included various themed rooms, puppet shows, waterfalls, and employees dressing up as gorillas to entertain diners. However, Bonita fell on hard times thanks to Covid-19, which led to its owner filing for bankruptcy,...

Image
If you can’t make the trip to Denver to eat at the famous Casa Bonita restaurant, watching the documentary “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” is the next best thing. And you can do it very soon, as the doc is hitting Paramount+ on Wednesday, the streaming service announced Monday.

“¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” tells the story of the “rise, fall, and revival” of the iconic Lakewood, Colo. landmark, which opened in 1974, went bankrupt in 2021, and was rescued by “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who grew up going to Casa Bonita and immortalized it in a classic 2003 “South Park” episode. The documentary covers Parker and Stone’s ambitious attempt to restore the restaurant to its former glory, which they approach with the same intensity documented in the Emmy-nominated making-of-“South Park” documentary “6 Days to Air,” which shares producers with “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” The project quickly becomes a...

Image
Start planning your fiestas now: Hit documentary “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” will launch on Paramount+ this week.

The film tells the story of how “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker worked to save beloved Colorado-based Mexican restaurant Casa Bonita, which was immortalized in a classic episode of their animated show.

The film has had a very limited theatrical run, but it has performed exceptionally well for a documentary, bringing in just shy of $125,000. “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” has been one of the highest-grossing documentaries of the year.

We’re Getting a New Documentary About Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s First Movie
Image
¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!, the new documentary about Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s restaurant side-hustle/$40 million midlife crisis, is a big hit with audiences so far. Which isn’t all that surprising considering that cable TV has already proven that people like both South Park and watching strangers go through hellish ordeals in restaurants.

Well, soon we’re going to be getting yet another feature-length doc about the exploits of Parker and Stone, thanks to good old physical media. And it also involves the culinary arts — to some degree at least.

Parker’s directorial debut, 1993’s Cannibal! The Musical, is receiving its first ever Blu-Ray release, meaning that we’ll finally be able to see the alleged flesh-eating exploits of Alfred Packer in high definition. And just imagine how crisp the audio will be on songs like “Let’s Build a Snowman” and “Shpadoinkle.”

The film is actually being released by two different companies.

Casa Bonita Mi Amor Review | The South Park Creators' Delicious Documentary
Image
South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone fall headfirst into a money pit after purchasing a treasured theme restaurant from their youth. Casa Bonita Mi Amor! tells the funny, maddeningly frustrating, and eventually triumphant tale after spending an eye-popping fortune. Casa Bonita, a 50,000 square foot gaudy Mexican eatery fashioned after a Disneyland village, opened in 1974 Lakewood, Colorado, to fanfare and acclaim. It became a beloved institution before falling into disrepair and mismanagement, ultimately closing during the pandemic. Filmmaker Arthur Bradford documents Parker and Stone's rescue efforts. What begins as a straightforward renovation spirals to calamity with hopes and dreams running into a brick wall of reality.

Casa Bonita Mi Amor! opens in 2012 with footage of Trey and Matt taking their families to the restaurant for a night of fun. Trey, who absolutely adored Casa Bonita as a child, comments it smells like "chlorine and beans" with a laugh. Everyone...

On-Air Film Review: Meet Some Friends at ‘¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!’
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on September 12th, reviewing the new documentary “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” In limited release on September 13th (see local listings).

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Trey Parker and Matt Stone of “South Park” and “The Book of Mormon” for some reason (mostly nostalgia) purchase the Denver-based Mexican themed restaurant Casa Bonita. But it’s not just any Mexican Restaurant, it’s a bizarre mishmash of tunnels, animatronic mascots, puppet shows, people in costumes running around and yes, cliff divers in a real waterfall pool, which is all available around and during the dining experience. When the reality of being restaurant owners sets into the wacky pair, an original six million dollar renovation budget starts to multiply into many times that sum.

”¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” is in select theaters on September 13th, see local listings, and on Paramount+ later this fall.

‘¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!’ Review: Matt Stone and Trey Parker Revamp a Colorado Classic
Image
When I first moved to Denver, Colorado, I had heard stories about the Mexican restaurant Casa Bonita. Casa Bonita, an off-beat suburban restaurant that’s seen better days, was a staple of many Denverites’ childhoods. Memories filled with exploring vast indoor cave dwellings, watching cliff jumpers dive into a massive pool of water, random gorilla sightings, and a Disneyland-like atmosphere that welcomes guests with cafeteria-style Mexican food, Casa Bonita’s popularity was attributed to a wonderment that consumed all 52,000 square feet of the humongous eatery.

Time has not been kind to one of Colorado’s most visited attractions. The Covid-19 pandemic sent the owners of Casa Bonita into bankruptcy, and many Denver area residents feared the worst: their beloved establishment would close forever. It was looking like that would be the case despite protests and campaigns to save it, but then the most famous Colorado natives decided to live out their dreams.

The Casa Bonita Movie Is a Huge Hit in the One Theater Where It’s Playing
Image
South Park fans and multimillion dollar novelty eatery enthusiasts are no doubt eagerly awaiting ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!, the new documentary chronicling Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s efforts to restore the beloved Colorado restaurant to its former glory.

Instead of being unceremoniously dumped onto streaming services like so many other documentaries these days, ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor! is actually getting a theatrical release. In fact, it’s out right now — but only in one theater in Colorado.

While the movie is coming to select cities on September 13th, it opened this past weekend at the Alamo Drafthouse in Denver, which isn’t far from the actual Casa Bonita. The hometown release was a huge hit even before it began, with booming presales prompting the theater to adjust its screening schedule from two showings a day to “4-5 shows, possibly with more to be added.”

‘South Park’ Creators Putting Cartoon On Hold Until 2025, Why?
Image
Matt Stone and Trey Parker have never been scared of controversy. However, they showed they are unwilling to take on the upcoming controversies this year. As a result, the duo chose to delay the next season until 2025. The creators don’t want to deal with the real-world headaches of 2024.

Here is why Matt and Trey chose to push off South Park until 2025.

South Park Won’t Be Back Until 2025

Any fan who hoped to see a new season of South Park in 2024 will be disappointed. Many fans wanted to see Matt Stone and Trey Parker deliver their scathing criticism of the upcoming presidential election, but the creators want nothing to do with it.

Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny of ‘South Park’

While there will be plenty of chances to spoof the upcoming presidential election, Matt and Trey are tapping out. This is unusual for them since they usually attack all real-world issues with no abandon.

Matt Stone & Trey Parker’s ‘¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!’ Leads Doc Heavy Weekend, Tubi’s ‘The Thicket’, Thriller ‘Red Rooms’ – Specialty Preview
Image
Docs are prominent among specialty releases this weekend with South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker renovating a massive Mexican restaurant and creative takes on psychics, oysters, Abraham Lincoln and Casablanca bread riots. The Thicket starring Peter Dinklage marks Tubi Films’ first non-day-and-date release. French Canadian chiller Red Rooms gets a U.S bow from Utopia. Screens for indie fare have been scarce and are now running over with Tim Burton’s anticipated wide release Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor! starts a limited run this weekend and has been racking up significant presales that promise one of the highest per-screen averages for a documentary since Covid at its first stop, Alamo Denver. Deadline hears theaters initially scheduled two shows a day but have been upping that to 4-5 shows, possibly with more to be added.

Directed by Arthur Bradford, the doc premiered at Tribeca where it won the audience award,...

‘¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!’ Had a Muy Bonita Opening on a Single Screen in Denver
Image
MTV Documentary Films executives are likely dancing the salsa — and perhaps dipping chips in it — over the early returns from their new documentary “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!”

“¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” opened last night with just one showing on a single screen at a single Alamo Drafthouse location in Denver, but combined with pre-sales, the film already has a per-theater-average (PTA) of $19,296, IndieWire can reveal exclusively. The pre-sales figure alone, which by Thursday reached $15,600, was itself enough to have the best PTA of 2024 for a documentary, surpassing “War Game” and “Eno”.

If the numbers persist throughout the weekend, “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” could have the largest PTA for any documentary since Covid. Since 2020, the only film that comes close to the numbers “Casa Bonita” projects to hit is 2023’s “Anselm,” which had a PTA of $21,000 across two theaters.

‘¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!’ Review: Trey Parker and Matt Stone Bite Off More Than Expected Restoring a Bad-Taste Restaurant
Image
Twenty years ago, I was fortunate enough to visit the set of “Team America: World Police,” an ambitious Jerry Bruckheimer-style action parody, starring puppets, for which Trey Parker and Matt Stone had constructed an enormous North Korean set out of cocktail umbrellas and take-out containers. Driven by equal parts obstinacy and nostalgia (for the vintage “Thunderbirds” TV show), it was the craziest thing the “South Park” creators had ever done.

That was before the pair decided to revive another guilty pleasure from their past: Casa Bonita, a beloved Denver-area Mexican restaurant, built by gringos in 1973 as an armchair tourist’s idea of 19th-century Acapulco. On the outside, a bubblegum-pink bell tower loomed tall enough to be seen across town, luring families to the retro fun park within. The food, which was mass-produced far from sight and pushed out through slots in the wall, tasted something like Taco Night at San Quentin.

‘¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!’ Review: Two of Our Most Cynical Comedians Get Surprisingly Sincere About Restoring a Beloved Kitsch Restaurant
Image
Few pieces of media have done a better job of reflecting — or, depending on how much faith you have in art’s ability to shape the public consciousness, contributing to — the mean-spirited cynicism of 21st century America than “South Park.” Trey Parker and Matt Stone have long embraced their Comedy Central series’ status as an equal opportunity offender, finding ways to satirize every demographic and belief system so cruelly that it’s impossible to argue that they’re discriminating against anyone. The only prevailing worldview in their two-dimensional universe is that believing in anything too sincerely makes you a sucker that’s begging to be mocked.

None of which is meant to diminish the show’s brilliance, as it often points its rhetorical knives at an unserious world that deserves the contempt. But it does make the earnestness of “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” more than a little surprising. Arthur Bradford...

‘This is the Most Dangerous Thing I’ve Ever Seen’: Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Casa Bonita Documentary Looks Stressful as Hell
Image
The documentary about the massive Casa Bonita renovation project launched by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone is going to premiere before the restaurant itself opens its doors to the general public — and looking at the trailer for ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!, it’s easy to understand why.

On September 23, 2021, Parker and Stone finalized a deal to purchase the struggling Mexican restaurant and entertainment complex Casa Bonita in Lakewood, Colorado for $3.1 million. At the time, Casa Bonita had closed its doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and with its infrastructure crumbling and its finances doing the same, the closure seemed all but permanent before a couple of obscenely wealth and devotedly nostalgic Colorado natives decided to purchase the towering pink cathedral after falling in love with Casa Bonita back during their childhoods.

However, the sizable sale price on the the failing business would quickly pale in comparison to...

South Park Creators Revive Casa Bonita Restaurant in New Documentary
Image
The creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, will be the subject of a new documentary that hits theaters next month chronicling the duo's quest to bring a famed Mexican restaurant back from the dead. Stone and Parker debuted South Park back in 1997 after developing the animated series from their 1992 and 1995 short films, both of which were titled The Spirit of Christmas. Since then, the animated series has gone on to enter the zeitgeist of popular culture, and become a worldwide franchise comprised of not only the popular show, but movies, albums, and video games as well.

Per Variety, Casa Bonita Mi Amor! will trace Stone and Parkers journey of purchasing Casa Bonita in 2021 to bring it back to life following its closure in 2020 due to Covid, which ultimately led to its owner filing for bankruptcy. The Mexican eatery has been a staple in Lakewood, Colorado for 50 years,...

‘¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!’ Trailer: ‘South Park’ Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone Resurrect a Beloved Mexican Restaurant in Documentary
Image
It’s “Kitchen Nightmares,” “South Park” style.

Documentary “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” takes the animated fandom of the dining establishment Casa Bonita and uses it to revitalize the real-life eatery. Described as the “Disneyland of Mexican restaurants,” Casa Bonita opened in 1974 in a Colorado strip mall. The infamous restaurant was featured in a classic 2003 episode of “South Park,” which IndieWire called the best episode of “South Park” ever, and in the 2017 video game “South Park: The Fractured but Whole.”

Series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone later stepped up to save Casa Bonita after learning that the restaurant was on the verge of bankruptcy. With $40 million, the eatery was restored. Their journey to reopen Casa Bonita in May 2023 was captured in documentary “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!,” which premiered at Tribeca 2024, where it won the Audience Award. The documentary will also screen at Telluride.

Trey Parker & Matt Stone Poke Fun At Their Grueling Casa Bonita Renovation As Doc Debuts – Tribeca Festival
Image
Matt Stone and Trey Parker, born and raised in Denver, were obsessed as kids with Mexican restaurant Casa Bonita, a massive, labyrinthine, Disneyland-ish local landmark that opened in 1974 in Lakewood, Colorado with roving characters, live entertainment — including a cliff diving show — secret rooms and so-so food. It fell on hard times and then closed in 2020 during Covid.

So they bought it after some soul searching and hoped a speedy renovation would delight their kids and others as they had been delighted. The Denver area cheered.

It was not speedy and quickly soared past the estimated $6 million budget — ultimately passing $40 million. Floors, walls and ceilings were rotten, everything electric outdated and dangerous and plumbing a disaster in the 54,000 square foot emporium. A falcon had been dropping pigeon carcasses onto the roof since the 1970s. There is much footage in the new doc ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor! of Parker wandering the site in distress,...

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are to make a rare public appearance at the Tribeca Film Festival later this week.

The South Park creators will participate in a conversation after the world premiere of documentary ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!.

The event, which takes place on Friday June 7, will be hosted by Watch What Happens Live star Andy Cohen and will also feature director Arthur Bradford.

The documentary, which comes from the producer of 6 Days to Air, tracks the rise, fall and revival of the beloved Colorado landmark Casa Bonita.

Casa Bonita opened in 1974 in an unassuming strip mall. As the first competition entry to screen at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival — and the second to be supported by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production deal with Netflix — this raucous doc is bound to get attention, and also makes a nice complement to “American Factory” in showing the range of projects the...
