Spanish Comedy King Santiago Segura’s ‘The Night My Dad Saved Christmas’ Nabbed by Filmax (Exclusive)
Image
Barcelona-based indie studio Filmax has nabbed international sales rights to Joaquín Mazón’s “The Night My Dad Saved Christmas,” starring Spain’s king of comedy Santiago Segura (”Father There Is Only One”) and Ernesto Sevilla (“I Can Quit Whenever I Want”).

A Spain-Mexico co-production, the film teams Spain’s tax incentive structure La Navidad en Sus Manos Aie with three of Spain’s most successful film production companies: Nadie Es Perfecto, Esto También Pasará Producciones and Bowfinger International Pictures.

The family comedy, scripted by Francisco Arnal and Daniel Monedero, is set in the days leading up to Christmas, when Santa – played by Segura – has an accident on his sleigh, right in the middle of Madrid, and ends up in hospital, where he will have to stay until after Christmas.

Fortunately, Salva, the guy he’s sharing a room with at the hospital, is willing to step in and take on his all important Christmas work.

‘Valley of the Dead (Malnazidos)’ Review (Netflix)
Image
Stars: Miki Esparbé, Aura Garrido, Luis Callejo, Álvaro Cervantes, Jesús Carroza, María Botto, Mouad Ghazouan, Sergio Torrico | Written by Jaime Marques, Cristian Conti | Directed by Javier Ruiz Caldera, Alberto de Toro

Netflix’s Spanish Civil War zombie movie Valley of the Dead (Malnazidos) is an entertaining stumble through familiar undead territory, courtesy of co-directors Javier Ruiz Caldera and Alberto de Toro. As such, it won’t surprise anyone who’s seen a zombie movie before, but it pushes all the right buttons, thanks to genre-savvy direction, likeable performances and a snappy script.

Valley of the Dead begins in 1938, in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, which has bitterly divided the losing Republican side and the Nazi-assisted Franco-led Nationalist side. In a chilling opening sequence, Nazi soldiers murder a wedding party and then spray the corpses with a blue gas, under the watchful eye of their Commandant (Francisco Reyes).

Risen review

From director Kevin Reynolds comes Risen, a faith-based movie with interesting pros and cons...

The trailer for Risen declares it “the most important manhunt in history”, which means they obviously haven’t seen The Fugitive. Let’s tread a bit carefully, though. I’m not about to knock anyone’s religion, but if Risen has a problem, it’s that it takes a stance on the divinity of Christ.

This isn’t a theological or ethical problem; it’s a narrative one. See, Risen bowls along quite agreeably as a sort of police procedural, benefiting from the mystery of whether a man really has risen from the dead or not. But when it makes a decision on this, the intrigue is lost and your interest wanes a bit.

Yes, a police procedural. Battle-scarred Roman tribune Clavius (a beefed-up Joseph Fiennes) is busy shoving his sword through people...

Film Review: Reverent, Joyful & Inspirational Jesus in ‘Risen’
Chicago – I am a recovering Catholic, which I’ll tell you a million times – or maybe shortly after I meet you – and I have to say I had a well of nostalgia while experiencing “Risen,” the story of Jesus’s Resurrection and aftermath. It is enjoyable, in a strange way, for Christians and film fans alike.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

There is a lightness to the story, with a little historical re-creation thrown in for good measure. The Jerusalem of Christ’s time is portrayed with the dirt and grit of the age, which also lent an air of authenticity. It reminded me of the 48 hours after the John F. Kennedy assassination, in which the shock of the event reverberates like a wave. The intrigue of whether Jesus – called by his Hebrew name Yeshua in the film – was the true Messiah played right into into the I-wash-my-hands of those who were charged with nipping it in the bud.

Joseph Fiennes and Tom Felton retell the Resurrection in 4 clips from Risen
Many are familiar with the biblical story of the Resurrection, but Risen attempts to give it a different perspective.

Told through the eyes of a non-believer, Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) is a powerful Roman Military Tribune who must solve the mystery of Jesus’ disappearance from the tomb after his crucifixion. Along with Lucius (Tom Felton), the two men must disprove the rising of Jesus in order to prevent an uprising in Jerusalem.

In four new clips from the film, we see how Clavius and Lucius began as enemies but came together in order to help solve this grand mystery. Many familiar figures are introduced, most notably Mary Magdalene, played by Argentinian actress Maria Botto.

Fiennes has made a career out of playing notable historical figures, most famously in 1998’s Shakespeare in Love. We’re excited for his return to the big screen—almost as much as seeing Felton shed his Draco...

Joseph Fiennes in La Résurrection du Christ (2016)
Risen Trailer Emerges Online
Joseph Fiennes in La Résurrection du Christ (2016)
The life, death and resurrection of Jesus has been the subject of many movies and TV series through the years, but Risen is looking to explore a different angle on part that particular story. Check out the first trailer for the film, which features Joseph Fiennes, Tom Felton and Peter Firth. Kevin Reynolds’ film, which he co-wrote with Paul Aiello, follows Roman military tribune Clavius (Fiennes), a firm believer in his empire’s power and someone tasked with removing resistance. But when it appears that Jesus of Nazareth has – in accordance with his followers’ beliefs – risen from the dead after his crucifixion, Pontius Pilate (Firth) assigns Clavius and his aide Lucius (Felton) the task of figuring out the mystery, to avoid an uprising in Jerusalem. It’s certainly a sideways look at the story, and one that hasn’t often been tackled to such a degree. It could prove controversial,...
