Johnny Depp’s Upcoming Movies: Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is on the Card?
Image
His life and career may have met a significant downfall over the recent years, but Johnny Depp is very much back to turn the tables and mesmerize his audiences to the core – both with his exceptional acting chops as well as his impeccable charms. For one, he is all set to return to the screens with quite a few projects lined up.

Though he is renowned for his Jack Sparrow role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, that very Disney saga left him alone during his messy divorce with Amber Heard. This had him pledging that he wouldn’t return to the lore, no matter what.

Johnny Depp's 78% Fresh Drama Is Losing Its Streaming Home Next Month
Image
A Johnny Depp movie that some of his fans might not even know exists is about to leave Hulu. Minamata will depart the streaming service in July.

Depp fans will have until July 7 to watch Minamata before the 2022 biopic about photojournalist W. Eugene Smith is removed from Hulu. Depp portrays Smith, often described as "perhaps the single most important American photographer in the development of the editorial photo essay," in Minamata, which chronicles his documenting of the effects of mercury poisoning on the citizens of Minamata, Kumamoto, Japan.

While the biopic was a box office disappointment, grossing less than $1 million worldwide off a $13 million budget, the movie was largely well-received by critics. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Minamata holds an approval rating of 78%, based on 80 reviews, with the audience score even higher, at 92%. Many critics praised Depp's portrayal of Smith, with The Austin Chronicle noting that it was...

Johnny Depp Sports a Grey Beard and Shabby Jeans in 'Day Drinker' Set Images
Image
Johnny Depp is slowly making his way back into Hollywood, but images from the set of his latest film, the action crime movie Day Drinker, has given a first look at the unrecognizable former heartthrob sporting a scruffy beard and long greying hair. However, it is all for the character he is playing, and the beard is not a permanent fixture that those who still follow Depp’s every move need to worry about.

Day Drinker will be the first major studio movie to star Depp since his legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard. While Heard has settled herself into a life away from the glare of Hollywood, Depp has been very slowly building a new portfolio of niche projects on his way to bigger things. While there are still several rumors circling the waters around a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie featuring Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, that...

Borja Cobeaga’s Malaga Title ‘Breaking Walls’ Offers Humorous Look at Fatherhood Amid ’80s Upheaval: ‘Comedy Is, for Me, a Revenge Against Reality’
Image
In the late 1980s, Bilbao’s working-class suburbs were a microcosm of newly democratic Spain’s broader socio-economic transformation. Amidst this, Borja Cobeaga’s upcoming comedy, “Breaking Walls” (“Los Aitas”), heads comedically into the evolution of fatherhood during this pivotal era. “Breaking Walls” is produced by Sayaka Producciones (“Colossal”), in collaboration with Inicia Films (“Glimmers”), Bteam Prods (“Schoolgirls”), and Despadres Aie. It follows a group of young gymnasts, all girls, whose fathers are “forced” to chaperone them on a trip to Berlin – a journey that coincides with the historic fall of the Berlin Wall. This road trip becomes a catalyst for these men to discover and redefine their roles as parents.

Cobeaga, collaborating with co-writer Valentina Viso (“Salve Maria”), grounds the film in the political, cultural and economic climate of the time. The opening features industrial stills of Bilbao, interspersed with references to the Pact of Ajuria Enea and the leadership of José Antonio Ardanza.

It also opens in the UK starting in October. Ingrid and Martha were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation. Starring Julianne Moore as Ingrid & Tilda Swinton as Martha, with Alessandro Nivola, John Turturro, Alex Høgh Andersen,...

Films From Carla Simon, Óliver Laxe, Jaime Rosales Feature in Our First Look at the Buzziest Catalan Titles Coming in 2025
Image
Catalan films have impressed at festivals and awards ceremonies around the world for years now as the region continues to punch far above its weight in the screen industries. As the fall festival season transitions into awards season, we wanted to take a look at the buzziest Catalan titles set to make their debut sometime next year.

Carla Simon, among the most exciting young filmmakers working in Europe today, will return with her fourth feature, “Romeria,” which is shooting now. The film tells the story of Marina, who travels to Vigo in the northwest of Spain to meet her biological father’s family after he dies of AIDS. The film is particularly close to Simon, who lost her parents to the disease when she was only six years old.

Óliver Laxe made headlines when his next production, “After,” was unveiled in January with Pedro Almodóvar’s El Deseo producing alongside...

The Room Next Door Review | A Beautiful Time to Die with Pedro Almodvar
Image
The Room Next Door is a sharp, solemn, and darkly funny English-language feature-length debut by filmmaker Pedro Almodvar. As it stands, his last two titles the short films The Human Voice (2020) and Strange Way of Life (2023) were also shot in English. And if they were teasers to a new level for Almodvar, then The Room Next Door is a veritable confirmation of many more exciting things to come from the Spanish writer and director, who is now in his 50th year behind the camera. His film, which just made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, contemplates death, perhaps even embraces it, but in doing so, Almodvar effectively underscores the need to embrace life and joy.

Based on the novel What Are You Going Through by Sigrid Nunez, The Room Next Door stars Julianne Moore as best-selling author Ingrid, who finds herself in New York City to...

Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘The Room Next Door’ Earns Mega 18-Minute Ovation At Venice Film Festival
Image
Pedro Almodóvar unveiled his latest feature, and his first in English, The Room Next Door, here at the Venice Film Festival this evening, receiving a mega 18-minute, 36-second ovation.

As soon as the lights came on and the audience stood, Almodóvar kissed the hands of both leading ladies, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. The unusually long length of the ovation was likely due to the cast and Almodóvar descending from the gallery and staying for awhile, clapping along with the crowd.

The Spanish maestro was joined at the world premiere screening by stars Moore and Swinton. Also featuring in the cast are Alessandro Nivola, Juan Diego Botto, Raúl Arévalo, Melina Mathews and Victoria Luengo, among others.

In the film, Moore stars as Ingrid, a best-selling writer who rekindles a relationship with her friend Martha, a war journalist played by Swinton. The two women immerse themselves in their pasts, but Martha...

The Room Next Door: Almodvars First Feature In English Is An Oddly Fractured Experience [Venice]
Image
It's always fascinating to see a master filmmaker work in a different language, especially when their work is singular. Tone, personality, and rhythm can come across very differently, and sometimes be difficult to recreate, in a new cultural context. Some take to it right away, others require time to find their footing. Pedro Almodvar's first feature-length film in English, The Room Next Door , is somewhere in between. The Spanish director's fingerprint is there, undoubtedly. But the movie feels strangely incomplete, as if made with one hand tied behind his back.

Venice Film Festival: 5 Can’t-Miss Premieres
Image
The 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival officially kicks off on Wednesday with the eyes of the film world focused on the Lido.

Long-running festival director Alberto Barbera and his team have unveiled a star-studded lineup, including possible awards season contenders. But which premieres can’t be missed amid the busy program?

THR‘s chief movie critic David Rooney looked through the selection of the big Italian festival to pick some of the most intriguing prospects.

The Brutalist

When Brady Corbet was in Venice at age 16 with Mysterious Skin, instead of flying home with his director Gregg Araki and co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, he stayed on a couple extra days to see the new Claire Denis film, The Intruder. That same cinephile curiosity is evident in the choice of filmmakers with whom he’s worked, among them Michael Haneke, Sean Durkin, Lars von Trier, Olivier Assayas and Mia Hansen-Love. Co-written with Mona Fastvold,...

The Oscar-winning Spanish director’s first English-language feature, “The Room Next Door,” was confirmed Tuesday morning as expected to premiere at the 2024 Venice Film Festival in competition. That was all in service of preparing to make his first movie entirely in English, “The Room Next Door,” led by “The Human Voice” star Tilda Swinton as a war correspondent named Martha. Good Behavior Season 2: Recap & Finale Explained
Image
Good Behavior season 2 marks the end of the series, leaving a cliffhanger about Letty and Javier's dangerous romance. The season ended with Letty killing for the first time, pushing her and Javier over a line they may not recover from. Despite creator Chad Hodge's hope for a finale, no plans for a Good Behavior season 3 have been mentioned in five years.

Good Behavior season 2 was the end of the road for TNT's twisted romantic thriller. Good Behavior follows freshly released criminal Letty, played by Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey). However, while she should focus on gaining custody of her estranged son Jacob, she falls back into bad habits. After overhearing information about a planned murder, she tries - and fails - to stop the assassin Javier (Juan Diego Botto) from taking out his target. Letty and Javier soon form a dangerous romance, which makes up the bulk of the drama on Good Behavior.
