Oliver Stone: making 'Snowden' was a “desperate venture”
Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Snowden (2016)
Maverick director discusses funding battle and says “evil” Hillary Clinton deserves “the [biopic] full treatment”.

Director Oliver Stone laid bare the financial challenge of geting biopic Snowden made during a Zurich Summit keynote on Saturday [24].

Stone and longtime producer Moritz Borman said that the film, about Us mass surveillance whistleblower Edward Snowden, was passed on by all major Us studios for distribution and production.

“It’s so difficult to make any movie unless you have a studio up front,” Stone said. “This was a desperate nail clinging fucking venture, there’s as much drama in [making Snowden] as there is in a film itself.”

Backers on the €40m feature include Open Road Films (which will release in the Us), Endgame, Borman/Kopeloff Productions, Vendian Entertainment, Tg Media, and KrautPack; Wild Bunch handles international sales.

Stone told the select gathering that according to him many big companies in Americas would self-censor themselves rather than join a project like Snowden, which debuted...

Oliver Stone Interview: Why ‘Snowden’ Is His Answer to American Bullies
Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Snowden (2016)
Nobody owns Oliver Stone. I’ve talked with this filmmaker for decades, and he’s consistent to a fault. The Oscar-winning writer-director (“Platoon,” “JFK,” “Wall Street”) has always gone his own way. If there’s an impediment, he’ll find a way around it. Hell, he’ll even con the El Salvador government to give him army soldiers for a movie critical of El Salvador.

Which is one reason why Stone met with Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden in Moscow, not once, or twice, but nine times. Stone will tell you: You can’t trust the United States government. You can’t trust the Nsa, CIA, or FBI. You can’t trust the Hollywood studios, because those are corporations run by lawyers. And you certainly can’t trust the media.

‘Playmobil’ Producers Rip Weinstein Company In Cross Complaint Over Toy Movie
Image
A week after The Weinstein Company went after Open Road and the producers of the upcoming Playmobil movie over who actually has the right to distribute the animated pic, the other side hit back – and they’re not playing around.

“There was never any contract with TWC,” says a cross-complaint (read it here) filed today by producers Moritz Borman and Dimitri Rassam and their respective companies in Los Angeles Superior Court. “TWC launched this controversy, masking its current financial instability by filing a strike suit with no written license attached,” the eight-page filing claims, also calling the whole matter a case “about a failed movie license negotiation which cratered.”

It goes on to claim that “the producers learned the production lending bank for the Project would neither trust nor accept as collateral a promise from TWC to pay a minimum guarantee, due to the bank’s negative perception about TWC’s disintegrating liquidity.

Back in November, On Animation Studios revealed that they are developing a new animated movie based on the popular Playmobil toys. We haven't heard anything about the project since then, but today, Variety has a new report that reveals the project is currently in production, under the new title Playmobil: Robbers, Thieves & Rebels. Cross Creek Pictures has acquired domestic distribution rights, with the studio planning a late 2018 release.

Bob Persichetti, who served as head of story on Monsters Vs. Aliens, Shrek 2, Puss in Boots and the upcoming animated reboot The Little Prince, will write and direct Playmobil: Robbers, Thieves & Rebels. No voice cast members have been announced at this time, but the $75 million Playmobil movie was recently introduced to buyers at the Toronto Internnational Film Festival. The project has already locked in pre-sales in numerous international markets, such as France, Germany, Latin America, Benelux, Switzerland and the Middle East.
