Doc NYC 2024 Awards: ‘Yalla Parkour,’ ‘Stone Mountain,’ and More Among Winners

The 2024 Doc NYC festival has unveiled its winners.

The critically acclaimed festival, which is the largest documentary festival in the U.S., marked one of its most successful in-person editions yet, with more than 20,000 viewers having watched films over nine days in New York alongside more than 1,500 filmmaker and industry guests participating in screenings and panels.

The juries for each respective award, along with the coveted Audience Award, had tough competition among this year’s festival.

Among eight international features, Areeb Zuaiter’s feature debut “Yalla Parkour” was selected as the winner. “Yalla Parkour” had its world premiere at the festival, and centers on young parkour athletes in Gaza who practice the sport on a “conflict-scarred” landscape.

Actress and singer Krysta Rodriguez (Halston) has joined the cast of Out Of Order, a new comedy starring Brandon Routh, Sam Huntington and Brooke Shields.

Routh, who starred as Superman/Clark Kent in Superman Returns, and in The CW’s TV series DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will star as John Slater, an unsuccessful lawyer on a mission to win back his model girlfriend, played by Tao Okamoto, while juggling the most challenging case of his career. Star Jones to Serve as Judge on ‘Divorce Court’ This Fall (TV News Roundup)

Fox announced that lawyer, journalist and former “The View” co-host Star Jones has been appointed judge of the first-run syndicated series “Divorce Court,” starting in September.

As television’s longest running court show, “Divorce Court” dates back to the late 1950’s, when actors used to reenact actual divorce proceedings. Today, the program features real people and real cases — ranging from divorce court proceedings to other domestic disputes.

Judge Faith Jenkins will continue through the end of Season 23 and Jones will join for Season 24. Jones, a former assistant district attorney in New York and former legal correspondent on NBC’s “Today Show,” “Nightly News” and more, said that she will “offer the parties before ‘Divorce Court,’ as well as viewers, a no-nonsense approach to the law and a decision driven by my proven legal expertise, compassion and empathy, personal experiences and hard-earned common sense.”

Ghenea, who plays classic movie star Sophia Loren in the fashion film, will take on the role of accomplished yachtswoman Naomi who embarks on a solo trip through the Caribbean to meet her boyfriend Jackson (played by Westwick) in Grenada.

When a storm forces Naomi of course, she encounters survivors of a shipwreck who, it soon transpires, are actually drug traffickers. Peacock is turning up the heat this holiday season with some exciting content.

The streamer on Thursday confirmed premiere dates for the original movie The Housewives of the North Pole, competition series, Baking It, and a one-hour special titled Chrisley Knows Thanksgiving.

Starring previously announced Betsy Brandt and Kyle Richards, The Housewives of the North Pole will be available to stream Thursday, December 9.

‘Terror Lake Drive’ Renewed For Season 2 At Allblk

AMC Networks streamer Allblk has renewed Terror Lake Drive for season 2, which will pick up two years after the events from the season 1 finale.

The upcoming season of the anthology will focus on traveling nurse Deja, the newest tenant at the troubled Freeman Lake Apartments who relocated to Atlanta, Georgia from Austin, Texas for a job assignment. There she will room with an awkwardly shy and eclectic Doula named Shana, who works at Atlanta University Hospital, where Deja will also be employed.

Deja is unaware of the apartment building’s checkered past and unknowingly becoming a target of the latest eerie coincidence to inhabit the troubled complex.

Exclusive: Sacred Hunger, the Booker Prize-winning novel by Barry Unsworth, is set for a small-screen remake.

Plan B and Marshall exec producer Chris Bongirne and his production company Smokestack Films have teamed up with financier Stephen Leist to acquire the rights to the book, which follows the journey of a struggling young English doctor aboard 18th century slave ship the Liverpool Merchant.

The book was published in 1992 and it shared the Booker Prize that year with Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient, which went on to become Anthony Minghella’s Oscar-winning film starring Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Jerry Lamothe is directing the pic, which follows Maurice (played by Sylvince), a downtrodden immigrant with aspirations of becoming a boxer and seeking a better life in America after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Indie comedy drama "Multiple Sarcasms" will go out to theatres in New York as well as Los Angeles and Seattle some time in March next year. The film expands to additional areas in April and May via Multiple Avenue Releasing. Starring are Timothy Hutton, Mira Sorvino, Dana Delany, Mario Van Peebles and Stockard Channing. Brooks Branch directs as well as writing the screenplay alongside Linda Morris. Chris Bongirne produces. The film focuses on a man who has a successful professional life as well as beautiful wife and a daughter. However, he realizes that he is not happy, quits his job and moves to write a play about his life which jeopardizes his marriage.
