    French mystery novelist, often in partnership with Pierre Boileau. A student in literature and philosophy at the Sorbonne, he was a teacher before commencing his writing career in 1951. A specialist in macabre, intricately plotted suspense stories, much of his work has been adapted by such noted directors as Alfred Hitchcock and Henri-Georges Clouzot.
