Peter Bogdanovich, New Hollywood Auteur of ‘Paper Moon,’ ‘Last Picture Show,’ Dead at 82
Image
Peter Bogdanovich, the celebrated, Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind classics like The Last Picture Show and Paper Moon, as well as a frequent actor, died Thursday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 82. Bogdanovich’s daughter, Antonia Bogdanovich, confirmed his death, saying the director died of natural causes.

Bogdanovich began his career as a film critic and reporter before meeting producer Roger Corman, who’d been so impressed with some of his work that he enlisted him to help out on some of his films. Despite this ostensibly unconventional path into the film industry,...

He was 82. Family members, who were by his side, said paramedics were unable to revive him.

While he would be best known later for his deadpan turn as the shrink’s shrink in The Sopranos, Bogdanovich exploded onto the cinematic scene in 1971 with The Last Picture Show, a box office hit he wrote and directed that drew comparisons to Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane and earned the filmmaker his only two Oscar noms — for Best Director and Adapted Screenplay. Review: Phantom Halo Never Quite Decides What It Wants To Be
Antonia Bogdanovich's feature debut Phantom Halo can never quite figure out which direction to head in. Part family drama, part crime thriller, these two ideas are not necessarily antithetical, and each in and of themselves is not necessarily bad (though each is more than a little cliched). But finding a balance of tone and a steady rhythm is difficult in a film that can't make up its mind, despite efforts on the part of the actors. Samuel (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and his older brother Beckett (Luke Kleintank) live on the brink of poverty with their drunk gambling-addicted father Warren (Sebastian Roche). Samuel performs monologues from Shakespeare in the street, while Beckett pickpockets onlookers. But they need more cash, fast, or risk serious harm from a local...

Review: Crime Thriller 'Phantom Halo' Executive Produced By Peter Bogdanovich
“Phantom Halo” tries to become a modern Shakespearean tragedy and ends up as a painfully generic family crime drama. The Shakespeare connection is not really far fetched, since Antonia Bogdanovich’s (yes, Peter Bogdanovitch’s daughter, he executive produced the film) feature directorial debut, about a family struggling to survive amidst a barrage of economic hardships, contains a father-son duo who are obsessed with the Bard. Bogdanovich’s film even begins with a run of the mill art house black-and-white dream sequence, the kind that Peter Dinklage in “Living in Oblivion” would have made fun of, as the unnecessarily dour voiceover recites the famous soliloquy from “Macbeth.” Alas, “Phantom Halo” tries to be a tale full of sound and fury, but in the end it signifies nothing. Co-written by Antonia Bogadanovich and Anne Heffron, and based on Boganovich’s short film, “My Left Hand Man,” “Phantom Halo” follows the exploits of the Emerson family.
