Gullane+ Nabs Distribution Rights to Cannes Classic Doc ‘Para Vigo Me Voy’ About Legendary Brazilian Filmmaker Cacá Diegues
Image
Gullane+, the fast-growing distribution arm of top Brazilian production company Gullane Entretenimento, has acquired both Brazilian and international distribution rights to Lírio Ferreira and Karen Harley’s “Para Vigo Me Voy.”

The documentary, playing at Cannes Classics, is a portrait of the legendary Brazilian filmmaker Carlos Diegues told through the weaving of film excerpts and rare footage into a journey through 60 years of Brazilian cinema.

Speaking with Variety out of Cannes, Gullane co-founder and producer Fabiano Gullane calls the documentary a “tribute to one of the most important directors and producers we ever had in Brazil,” adding that Diegues was pioneering in how he “paved the way” for Brazilian cinema in the international market. It is a particularly poignant homage considering that the country recently landed its first-ever Oscar for Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here” and is in a prominent position at this year’s Cannes Film Festival as the...

Speaking with Variety out of Berlin, where Gullane is heavily promoting its distribution efforts, Fabiano Gullane said the three partners always “really liked the distribution part of the process” and realized they could employ their many years of expertise in handling some of their titles. Initially, Gullane+ will focus on documentaries and smaller productions, with major projects still benefiting from their long-standing partnership with Brazilian distributors like Paris Filmes.

Rio2C Projects Showcase Opens Up to True Crime, Sports, Impact Content
Image
In Brazil, a country of overwhelming scale and opportunity, it’s fully fitting that its project pitching event at the industry heart of Rio2C is equally super-sized.

Over June 5-7, the Rio2C Market will host 30 film-tv pitches, presentations from 24 startups and 12 pocket music acts, plus both a dozen creator pitches and another dozen unveils of literary IPs looking for big or small screen adaptation.

The 30 Audiovisual Pitching Sessions also reflect powerful market forces at work in Brazil and beyond.

There are six Sessions in all. Half of their categories are new, however: True Crime, Impact Content and Sports.

“The demand for non-fiction audiovisual content “has never been higher,” said Diego Assis, Universo Online’s general manager of special features, when drilling down on the strategic partnership between Uol, the biggest Brazilian internet portal, and Lb Entertainment, behind “Sintonia,” Netflix’s biggest franchise in Brazil.

“People want to feel like they are still grounded,...

Of Beast and Man: Ana Vaz’s Ecological Dreamscapes
Image
Artist in Focus: Ana Vaz is now showing on Mubi in many countries. It Is Night in America.Immersed in the universe of the Brazilian artist Ana Vaz you may find yourself equally entranced by and alienated from the beauty of nature. The appeal of Vaz’s installations and experimental films resides in this dichotomy. It’s devastating to see the ways in which humans have the power to plunder natural habitats, by design or recklessness, yet it is also frightful to ponder post-human landscapes—particularly the sublime beauty that may yet arise in the world without us. Gifted with a formidable visual and aural sensibility, Vaz creates images that are as tactile and immediately graspable as her stories are multilayered. And while there’s something incredibly melancholic about her films, particularly her post-apocalyptic dreamscapes, she often portrays time as so vast, expanding into primordial ages and futuristic eons, that...
