It's always a delight to see someone as peculiar as Aubrey Plaza make it big. Known for her deadpan affect and zany antics, Plaza has made a name for herself in the industry through both her comedic and dramatic roles. Indeed, though she is best known for her sardonic sense of humor and stony expression, she's shown us her range in recent years, mobilizing her natural intensity for a fascinating assortment of roles. From starring in Francis Ford Coppola's divisive "Megalopolis" to voicing a cat named Tardar Sauce in "Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever," Plaza's projects run the gamut.
Plaza's fans know that her talk show appearances are just as delightful as her films and television shows. Remember when she got up on the desk and licked Stephen Colbert's face? Or when she went full witch for Seth Meyers? But, as wonderful as Plaza's public persona is, we're...

No matter how bad your summer vacations have been, they could in no way compare to the sheer horror of the villa getaway in “The Decameron,” one that is as filled with black comedy as it is with the Black Death.
Set in 14th-century Italy, Newtflix’s eight-episode limited series finds a group of (mostly) nobles fleeing the death and decay surrounding them to wall themselves away in a fortified palace, where they plan to frolic, drink, and generally be merry. Human nature being what it is, however, their plans are quickly derailed, and the show takes on a darker tone as the body count rises.
Along the way, there are enough secret identities and miscommunication to populate a Shakespeare play (though Giovanni Boccaccio’s book predates the Bard by a few hundred years). With a large ensemble and ever-shifting alliances, the costume design must pull its weight to keep...

Netflix’s latest dark comedy The Decameron answers the question: How would a group of wealthy people, isolated from the rest of the world due to a pandemic, act? If that premise is sounding eerily relevant to the last few years, it’s no coincidence.
Showrunner Kathleen Jordan was inspired by what the world had experienced during the early days of Covid-19, and by “the concept of examining the slice of life moment of a pandemic.” Loosely based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s short story collection set during the Black Death, Jordan found a way to tell this story to a modern audience.
A jam-packed ensemble cast — including Tony Hale, Zosia Mamet, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Jessica Plummer and Tanya Reynolds — comes together in an Italian villa in an attempt to wait out the plague. While the concept itself doesn’t immediately read comedy, through Jordan’s unique tone and the acting, the...

The Decameron is a modern take on a 650-year-old tale, full of relatable characters and humorous situations. Through deception and indulgence, the noble characters in The Decameron navigate the Black Plague with humor. The show offers a uniquely cathartic and satirical narrative that reflects the absurdity of selfishness amid chaos.
Although set in 1348 during the time of the Black Plague, The Decameron is full of modern language as well as plenty of modern music that helps to set its cheeky tone, which makes Netflixs latest medieval dark comedy feel more relevant than ever. Oddly enough, the series is based on the Italian short-story collection of the same name by Giovanni Boccaccio, which was published in the 14th century shortly after the epidemic that ravaged Florence, Italy, finally came to an end. The Decameron is the eighth most-watched series globally on Netflix in this week's trending shows. The series draws mixed reviews for its irreverent humor and lack of social commentary. Strong performances from the cast make The Decameron enjoyable to watch.
The Decameron earns a spot on Netflix's global streaming chart. The historical and dark romantic-comedy series sees the wealthy elite and their servants fleeing to a countryside villa when a plague, known as the Black Death, spreads at an alarming rate. A 14th-century short story collection written by Giovanni Boccaccio titled The Decameron served as a loose inspiration for the series, although Netflix leans more into comedy than social commentary, leading to a 68% Rotten Tomatoes critical score and overall mixed reviews.

The Decameron, like other historical comedies, blends modern storytelling with 14th-century themes during the Black Plague. The Decameron and shows like The Great and My Lady Jane aren't too concerned with historical accuracy, instead providing audiences with comical interpretations. While waiting for news on a second season of The Decameron, audiences can enjoy other period comedies exploring similar themes.

Named for the 14th-century work by Giovanni Boccaccio, Netflix's The Decameron tells the story of a group of Italians trying to escape the torments of the bubonic plague. The Decameron on Netflix isn't the streaming service's first foray into the Middle Ages, and it veers from what Boccaccio wrote in many ways. However, there are echoes of truth and honesty in The Decameron that attest to the spirit of its namesake. The Decameron does not recount exactly what happened in Boccaccio's work. Rather, the show adapts the source material to be relevant and eerily familiar to viewers who have their own experiences with life during a pandemic.
Boccaccio's 100 short stories and 10 storytellers are the inspiration for The Decameron's eight episodes.

“I was inspired by the concept of examining the slice of life moment of a pandemic,” The Decameron showrunner Kathleen Jordan says to The Hollywood Reporter about the inspiration behind the new Netflix show.
The dark comedy, which released on the streaming platform last week, is loosely based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s short story collection set during the Black Death. The Decameron finds a group of characters, both nobles and servants, making their way to a villa in the Italian countryside in an attempt to wait out the plague.
While a plague-set show isn’t typically a touted as a “wine-soaked sex romp,” as The Decameron is, the Zosia Mamet and Tony Hale-led show manages to land laughs during a bleak time period.

Zosia Mamet shines in Netflix's raunchy comedy, The Decameron, despite the show's mixed reviews. Before The Decameron, Mamet guest starred in Dickinson, putting forth a hilarious take on Little Women novelist Louisa May Alcott. Mamet's role in Dickinson, another period comedy, prepared her for The Decameron.

Netflix's The Decameron is based on the novel by Giovanni Boccaccio, set during the Black Plague in Italy. The show deviates from the original book's humor and wit, relying more on character antics for comedy. Boccaccio's Decameron used humor to mock the Church and societal norms, with a lasting influence on modern storytelling.
Netflix's medieval black comedy The Decameron is based on a classic historical novel. The show follows a group of nobles and servants who isolate themselves in the Italian countryside to wait out the Black Death, or plague. Unlike in the plot of the source material, the group indulges in sex and wine until they begin to scramble for survival. The show and the original book of The Decameron are set during the Black Plague, the deadliest pandemic in human history. Also, to keep with the authenticity of the original story and setting, The Decameron was filmed in Italy.

Modern television has provided ample evidence that time does not dictate genre. The Emmys learned this the hard way, when they tried to bypass the comedy or drama debates by using runtimes to decide category placement, only to be swarmed by even more controversy during their confounding, seemingly arbitrary appeals process. Yes, it turns out half-hour shows can be dramas and hourlong shows can skew comedic. Look no further than some of TV’s buzziest, best shows: “The White Lotus”, “Succession”, and “The Bear” (let’s not start that up again).
But while time may not determine what a series is labeled, it does often weigh heavily on a series’ success. More important than shoving a show into one box or another is recognizing that many of these shows are successful because they blur the lines. “The Bear” serves up intense kitchen scenarios that can skew toward sitcom set-ups, yet...

‘The Decameron’ 2024 Review: An Abysmal Spoof Show About Medieval Italy That Could Have Been A Movie
Movies and television shows in the spoof genre must be tackled wisely. Not everyone can magically put out good spoofs; the material must make sense, and the context has to be understood by the audience watching it. Hotshot, Meet the Spartans, This is Spinal Tap, and The Dictator are some examples of spoof films that have mostly worked for people who enjoy a good laugh and understand the cultural context and significance.

The Decameron, created by Kathleen Jordan, transports us back to 14th-century Italy, where a few nobles are forced to stay together in a mansion due to a pandemic. The mansion was one of the last quarantine zones left that was safe and not infected by pestilence, so the nobles had no option but to stay there and bear with each other, though, in an ideal world, they would have torn one another apart. The narrative is chaotic; it’s cluttered with characters; it’s full of drama, though I am not very sure if it is as humorous as the makers would have wanted it to be. I personally haven’t read Giovanni Boccaccio’s short story collection of the same name, so I came to watch this series without any sort of expectations. I believe it would have been disappointing for those few who expected it to be an...

The Decameron, the Netflix series releasing on July 25th, takes its inspiration from Giovanni Boccaccio’s collection of short stories that he wrote around the same time period in which the series is set, i.e., the 1300s. Now, the creator of the show has already stated very explicitly that those who are expecting the series to be a word-by-word adaptation of Boccaccio’s stories will not be very happy after seeing the show. So, it can be said that the essence or the framework of the series is inspired by Boccaccio’s work, but the stories, the characters, their traits, and what they end up doing are totally changed.
If we talk about the similarities, then, just like in the short stories, in the series, a bunch of nobles fled to a palace situated in Fiesole to escape the Bubonic plague. The plague that came to be known as...

The Decameron, created by Kathleen Jordan, is inspired by the tales of Giovanni Boccaccio, in which 10 Florentines stuck in a mansion during the 1300s, tell each other stories when Europe was going through one of the most difficult phases in its history. So it can be said that the series is inspired by his short stories, though the makers have altered a lot of things and taken creative liberties wherever they could.
In the series, the Bubonic plague caused the deaths of millions of people. Nobody knew how to cure it, and so the recourse available was to go to a palace located in the countryside and socially distance yourself from everybody. So, a bunch of people who belonged to the royal bloodline decided to go to Signor Leonardo’s palace and save their lives. Now, everybody who was going there had their own motives and agendas, and I must...

The Decameron miniseries fails to capture the wit and language of Giovanni Boccaccio's iconic work. The plot lacks intrigue and the characters are generally unlikable, making it a slow watch. The show's humor falls flat, lacking guffaw-inducing moments and failing to establish its own unique style.
Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron is one of the most iconic Italian works of the 14th century, comprised of over 100 short stories that range in genre and inspired not only adaptations, but also influenced other authors of the time, including Chaucer and William Shakespeare. Similar to past adaptations, Netflix's miniseries is far more of a loose translation of Boccaccio's work, though unlike prior incarnations, it fails to either create its own language or match the wit of its source material.

The thumbnail image for The Decameron on the Netflix app depicts a naked man charging toward a lake, his backside demurely pixelated out. The image jibes with the streamer’s description of the comedy series as “a wine-soaked sex romp in the Italian countryside.” But the scene pictured is actually the only bit of nudity in The Decameron, which fails to deliver anything remotely steamy, scandalous, or even satirically sexy.
Inspired by 14th-century Italian author’s Giovanni Boccaccio’s short story collection of the same name, The Decameron revolves around a group of Italian nobles who retreat to a Tuscan villa to wait out the horrors of the bubonic plague. Some of them bring servants, all of them bring secrets, and pretty soon their countryside retreat is rife with lies, schemes, and illicit love affairs.

As Netflix’s The Decameron begins, nearly all of our characters are retreating. They might not put it in quite those terms, but it’s exactly what these characters are doing: flocking to the “beautiful, not-infected countryside,” as one character puts it, in hopes of waiting out the Black Plague currently tearing through the continent.
But it doesn’t matter how hard they try to get into “the holiday state of mind,” or how desperately some of them might hope to reorient their fortunes while away. It almost doesn’t even matter how insistently real life intrudes on their getaway. The Decameron is a fitfully funny, occasionally poignant testament to the truism that no matter the circumstances, people will always find a way to be people, in all our petty or horny or heroic glory.

Netflix is dropping a new show this summer that takes a classic old story and spins it into something fresh. “The Decameron” premieres on July 25th, and it’s blending history with modern storytelling in a really cool way.
The show is based on a famous book from the 1400s by an Italian dude named Giovanni Boccaccio. His book, also called “The Decameron,” follows a group of fancy nobles escaping from a nasty plague by telling each other stories for 10 days. This plague, called the Black Death, was sweeping through Italy and everybody was super scared. So these nobles hole up in a nice country house to avoid getting sick.
While there, they pass the time by picking a king or queen each night who gets to pick a theme for the stories. Over the next few hours, each noble has to spin a yarn that fits the theme. Boccaccio...

Netflix's The Decameron (2024) is a unique historical comedy inspired by 14th century Italian short stories by Giovanni Boccaccio. The humor, romance, and historical backdrop of The Decameron have drawn comparisons to Bridgerton. The Decameron features a talented ensemble that includes Tony Hale, Zosia Mamet, Tanya Reynolds, and more.
Netflixs The Decameron (2024) follows a unique, hilarious group of characters to an Italian villa in 1348 as they try and escape the Black Death in Florence. The series was inspired by the 14th century Italian short-story collection of the same name by Giovanni Boccaccio. Though they have their differences, the romance and historical setting have led people to compare Netflixs The Decameron and Bridgerton. The Decamerons raunchy humor makes it a sex comedy as well, with the villa characters often just as, if not more concerned with sex and romance as staying alive.
That is partially what makes The Decameron stand out among other medieval TV shows.

"The Decameron" is a medieval black comedy set in the middle of the 14th century. The upcoming show's tone, inspired by Giovanni Boccaccio's work, separates it from the popular historical romance series "Bridgerton." While both series involve romance, "The Decameron" offers raunchy humor during the Black Death, taking place more than 400 years before "Bridgerton."
While Bridgerton takes a (presumably long) hiatus between seasons 3 and 4, Netflix is releasing a new TV series that is seemingly similar to Shonda Rhimes' popular period drama but is actually very different. The historical romance show, created by Chris Van Dusen, is based on Julia Quinn's book series of the same name and follows the lives of the Bridgerton family. Falling in line with the set of eight novels, every season of Bridgerton revolves around one Bridgerton sibling and their love story, with Daphne's being told in season 1, Anthony's in season 2, and Colin's...

Netflixs New Comedy Looks Like The Best Replacement For This Daniel Radcliffe Show Canceled Too Soon
Netflix's upcoming show, The Decameron, is inspired by 14th-century short stories and offers a fun riff on the period-piece genre. The show shares a comedic take on the era with Daniel Radcliffe's Miracle Workers, exploring high-class elements with a snarky comedic bent. The Decameron could be the perfect replacement for Miracle Workers fans, as it delves into the ruling class in medieval times with a goofy but grisly approach.
Netflix's upcoming The Decameron could be the perfect show to fill the hole left behind by the cancelation of Daniel Radcliffe's hilarious TBS series. Inspired by the 14th-century short stories of Giovanni Boccaccio, the show focuses on a group of nobles trying to escape the Black Death in Florence by hiding in a Tuscan villa. Starring Zodia Mamet, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Tanya Reynolds, Amar Chadha-Patel, Leila Farzad, Jessica Plummer, and Tony Hale, it looks to be a very fun riff on the period-piece genre.

The deadliest pandemic in history has a saucy bunch of nobles in medieval Italy entangled in a countryside sex romp in the official trailer for Netflix’s The Decameron.
“I’ve been having sinful thoughts,” Lou Gala, who plays Neifile, a God-fearing and highly sexual young guest at a countryside villa during the Black Death pandemic, says at one point in the trailer for the series. (Think Love Island, with people also infiltrating a villa for temptation, but taking place in the hills of Tuscany in 1348.)
Social rules among the nobility and their servants eventually wear thin during this soapy dramedy from creator/showrunner Kathleen Jordan and executive producer Jenji Kohan as a wine-soaked sex romp ensues. People then begin to die but more from an orgy of riches and wine that has everyone scrambling for survival.

Wayne Garvie, Sony Pictures Television’s president of international production, has challenged European producers to better exploit Europe’s “treasure house of global IP”.
Speaking at Italy’s Avp Summit, Garvie said Europe has a huge depth of stories from Greek tragedies, Roman emperors, Norse gods, French musketeers, Spanish conquistadors to German fairy tales. “All of them have in various forms entertained the world for thousands of years, and each generation reinvents those stories.”
However, he noted US filmmakers are traditionally better at reinterpreting European stories for international audiences, and then capitalising on their success by building worlds and franchises around their series and characters.

There are so many clichés in the film world. So many of today's films are formulaic. Heck, before there even was a film world there was theater. That Shakespeare guy, even he reworked older stories. For example, Romeo and Juliet. The plot is based on an Italian tale translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1567. Othello comes from the Hecatommithi, a collection of tales published in 1565 by Giraldi Cinthio. Cinthio in turn had been influenced by the Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. Shakespeare's source for Macbeth is the account of Macbeth, King of Scotland, Macduff, and Duncan in Holinshed's Chronicles from 1587, a history of England, Scotland, and Ireland. And so on and so on.

“The Little Hours” has pissed off Catholics in a big way. The Catholic group America Needs Fatima recently launched an online petition opposing Jeff Baena’s comedy about three foul-mouthed, sexually liberated nuns played by Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, and Kate Micucci. Set in Italy in 1347, the film follows the nuns as their world is disrupted by a young servant (Dave Franco) who takes refuge at their convent after escaping from his master. Fred Armisen, Molly Shannon and John C. Reilly co-star in the film, which premiered in the 2017 Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight section.

Writer/director Jeff Baena draws on Giovanni Boccaccio’s 14th The Decameron for The Little Hours, a bawdy, absurd comedy where the F-bombs fly through air thick with schemes and suppressed lust. Some audiences may object to foul-mouthed women religious but for those who don’t, Baena’s comedy is very amusing, as well as a clever updated twist on a medieval classic.
Nuns in the 14th century were different from today, as a convent was a place where prosperous families could send unmarried daughters or in which women without wealth could shelter, as much as a place for the religiously devout.
