Here's How Many People You's Joe Goldberg Has Killed
Image
This article contains discussions of child abuse and suicide.

Stop reading this right now if you haven't finished all of "You" — spoilers are coming!

The fifth and final season of "You," the Netflix series that lets noted Taylor Swift fan Penn Badgley play a serial killer convinced he's actually some sort of white knight, is finally out ... which means we can finally assess Joe Goldberg's (Badgley) body count. No, I don't mean how many people Joe has dated throughout the series; I'm talking about how many people he's killed.

In case you've forgotten exactly what went down in the show's first four seasons, here's the overview. Joe Goldberg, who presents himself as a hopeless romantic but actually seems to love murder much more than he loves love, had a very difficult childhood; his biological father abused both him and his mother, and ultimately, a young Joe shoots and kills him.

'Crocodile Dundee' Crocodile, Burt, Dead at 90
Image
Fans of the beloved 1986 action comedy Crocodile Dundee awoke to some sad news this morning, as it’s been revealed that Burt, the saltwater crocodile that became famous for his appearance in the film, has passed away at the ripe old age of 90 – or thereabouts. Inspired by the true-life exploits of Rod Ansell, Crocodile Dundee starred Paul Hogan as Mick, an Australian bushman who’s tracked down by reporter Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski) for a news piece on his legendary status, and then invited back to the big city in your classic fish out of water tale.

Crocosaurus Cove made the announcement on their Instagram account (seen below) regarding Burt’s passing, saying that although no one knew his true age, he was "estimated to be over 90 years old." The reptile made his way to the Darwin, Australia location in 2008, where he became "one of the most recognized crocodiles in the world,...

Susan Seidelman on the Sex And The City pilot she directed: “The opening line of the script is “Once upon a time …” The opening starts off as a happy fairy tale and then it gets dark.”

In the first instalment with Susan Seidelman on her memoir, Desperately Seeking Something (St. Martin’s Press), we were joined by music producer and 99 Records founder Ed Bahlman, who over 40 years ago worked with Susan during the late stages of the editing process for her début feature film Smithereens (which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 1982), starring Susan Berman opposite Richard Hell and Brad Rijn.

In the second instalment Susan Seidelman discusses Dianne Wiest, Emily Lloyd, and Brenda Vaccaro in Cookie, her Sex And The City pilot, friendship and fashion, fairy tales and their dark side, Lina Wertmüller, the passing of Mark Blum, and the lack of female role models in.

Susan Seidelman on Directing the ‘Grittier’ Pilot for ‘Sex and the City,’ Casting Madonna in ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’: ‘She Loved Being Provocative’
Image
It’s New York City, 1989. Susan Seidelman is in the delivery room, in labor with her son. “Siskel and Ebert” plays on the TV, and in between contractions, the two critics are tearing apart her new movie “She-Devil.” “Watching them review my film literally with the doctor’s hand inside of me telling me to push was very strange,” Seidelman recalls.

That surreal scene is just one of the memorable moments the trailblazing director recounts in “Desperately Seeking Something: A Memoir About Movies, Mothers, and Material Girls.” By turns reflective and celebratory, the book covers the surprises and setbacks of a career carved out at a time when women filmmakers were a rarity.

When Seidelman first realized she could aspire to become a movie director, she could barely find a role model. Outside of Elaine May, there was only a small handful of women directing. But Seidelman kept at it,...

Image
To mark the Blu-ray release of Desperately Seeking Susan on 21st November, we’ve been given a copy of the boxset to give away on Blu-ray.

Rosanna Arquette (“The Aviator”) is irresistible in her first starring role and pop star Madonna (“Body of Evidence”) gives a marvelously comic performance in this delightful madcap comedy about mistaken identity. Bored New Jersey housewife Roberta (Arquette) fills her days by reading the personals and following an ongoing romance between “Jim” and “Susan” (Madonna), mysterious drifters who appears to lead the kind of free-spirited lives she can only dream about. And dream she does, until the day she actually shows up at the couple’s pre-arranged rendezvous in New York City… and after a bump on the head, a bout of amnesia turns her into Susan and opens the door to intrigue, laughter and love! Directed by Susan Seidelman (“Making Mr. Right”) with a...

‘Succession’ Season 3 Trailer: The Roy Family Battle Royale Is Fall TV’s Must-See Event
Image
Nearly two years after the second season of HBO’s crown jewel “Succession” delivered a jaw-dropping finale, the Emmy-winning corporate drama is back on October 17. Watch the official full trailer for Season 3 below.

Per HBO, this season’s official logline hints at lots of drama to come: “Ambushed by his rebellious son Kendall at the end of Season 2, Logan Roy begins Season 3 in a perilous position, scrambling to secure familial, political, and financial alliances. Tensions rise as a bitter corporate battle threatens to turn into a family civil war.”

Everything to know about ‘Succession’ Season 3
Image
Cue up the Nicholas Britell, “Succession” fans. The reigning Emmy Award winner for Best Drama Series will finally return for its long-delayed, longer-anticipated third season this fall on HBO and HBO Max. Created by Jesse Armstrong and starring Jeremy Strong (an Emmy Award winner for Best Actor), Brian Cox, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Alan Ruck, Nicholas Braun, and Hiam Abbass among others in its ensemble, “Succession” focuses on the corrupt lives of the ultra-wealthy Roy family and their media conglomerate. Here’s everything to know about Season 3 of the show so far.

Is there a ‘Succession’ Season 3?

Yes, of course. The third season of the acclaimed drama picks up immediately after the events of the Season 2 finale. In that episode, Kendall Roy (Strong) double-crossed his father, Logan (Cox), on live television, naming the Roy family patriarch as the main driver behind their company’s cruise ship scandal and cover-up. ‘Succession’ Season 3 Ignores Covid Because ‘Really Wealthy People’ Aren’t Too Affected by It
Image
HBO’s Emmy winner “Succession” is confirmed to be making its long-awaited return for Season 3 this October, but don’t expect to see the Roy family navigating the pandemic when the new season begins. While many series on television and streaming platforms have found ways to incorporate the pandemic, “Succession” Season 3 will sidestep Covid and carry on business as usual. Creator Jesse Armstrong wrote the third season before the pandemic and did not change the scripts during it.

A new report from Vulture on “Succession” Season 3 confirms: “[Creator Jesse] Armstrong decided early on that the season’s finished scripts wouldn’t be rewritten to incorporate the ongoing pandemic. ‘These are really wealthy people,’ says [Shiv Roy actress] Sarah Snook. ‘And unfortunately, none of the world’s really wealthy people were going to be affected by the pandemic.'”

“Succesion” Season 3 won’t tackle Covid, but Covid directly affected the series. As the Vulture report continues: “In March 2020, Mark Blum,...

Kieran Culkin, Alan Ruck, Brian Cox, Matthew Macfadyen, Jeremy Strong, Nicholas Braun, and Sarah Snook in Succession (2018)
Succession Season 3 Will Not Feature the Pandemic
Kieran Culkin, Alan Ruck, Brian Cox, Matthew Macfadyen, Jeremy Strong, Nicholas Braun, and Sarah Snook in Succession (2018)
Few shows’ schedules were hit harder by the coronavirus pandemic than HBO’s Emmy-award winning drama Succession. As recounted in a sprawling (and superb) New Yorker piece, season 3 of the beloved satire about the wealthy Roy family was set to begin filming in April of 2020 before the pandemic upended the those plans.

According to the series creator and showrunner Jesse Armstrong, HBO executives encouraged him to wait things out until they could have as normal a filming experience as possible “rather than have Logan do a series of Webinars we can put out on HBO Max.” The wait paid off as HBO announced today that Succession season 3 will be arriving in full this October. The network didn’t nail down a specific date yet but let it be known that Sunday, October 17 (the week after Indigenous Peoples Day) looks pretty juicy.

Despite feeling the effects of the pandemic more than other productions,...

Watch: 'Victor in Paradise' Dark Comedy Short by Brendan McHugh
Nicholas Braun
"This would look very nice in my dining room." Ah yes, nothing like a good story about a struggling artist. But this short film has a bit more to offer. Victor in Paradise is a bleak dark comedy short film written and directed by Brooklyn filmmaker Brendan McHugh, and after initially premiering at the Palm Springs International Shortfest, it's now available to watch online. When his landlord arrives to collect long overdue rent, Victor, a daydreaming painter of little means, desperately attempts to gather money needed to stave off eviction. He tries to sell some of his paintings, but it doesn't exactly work out. Poor guy. Starring Nicholas Braun (from "Succession") as Victor, along with Colby Minifie, Mark Blum, Susan Blommaert, and Buddy Duress. There's layers to this short film that many shorts don't even consider. Beyond that, it's just stylistically clever - the film has a bit of a Wes Anderson vibe.

Emmy Video Remembers Nick Cordero, Kobe Bryant & Daytime Stars Left Off Sunday’s Broadcast Memorial
Image
The Emmys’ In Memoriam segment Sunday left out a number of actors we lost in 2020, but the Television Academy hasn’t entirely overlooked them. Nick Cordero, Chi Chi DeVayne, Kobe Bryant, Shelley Morrison, Honor Blackman, and soap actors Roscoe Born, John Callahan, Marj Dusay and John Karlen are among the many names included in a more comprehensive roster on the Academy’s website.

Some of the names, including Morrison, actress Kelly Preston and Saturday Night Live‘s music producer Hal Willner, were represented in a not-particularly easy-to-read memorial segment during the Creative Arts ceremonies last week (see it below) but didn’t make the shorter roster on the Emmys broadcast Sunday.

The comprehensive scrolling roster includes performers whose body of work fell largely in other areas of entertainment – Cordero, Zoe Caldwell, Mark Blum and Brent Carver from the stage, Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green from music, Honor Blackman from film...

Livesteam Theater Review: Richard Nelson’s ‘What Do We Need To Talk About?’ Stakes Claim As First Great Drama Of The Pandemic
Jay O. Sanders
What will theater look like after the pandemic? How will stage artists address the societal upheavals wreaked by Covid-19? Everyone’s asking, no one knows, but Tony Award-winning playwright Richard Nelson and New York’s Public Theater offered up a much-needed and beautifully executed bit of hope last night with the era-suiting livestreamed world premiere of What Do We Need To Talk About?

The fifth and latest installment of writer-director Nelson’s series of dramas known collectively as the Apple Family Plays, What Do We Need… debuted Wednesday on YouTube and the Public’s website, picking up seven years after the last play, Regular Singing. While the first four installments were performed, with minimalist sets, as family dinner conversations on stage at the Public, What Do We Need… was presented entirely as a Zoom chat, with the homebound cast, performing live and in character, enacting the type of socially distanced...

Tom Hanks Pens Heartwarming Letter To Young Boy Being Bullied Due To Coronavirus
Tom Hanks at an event for Il n'est jamais trop tard (2011)
The world has gotten used to condensing several years’ worth of grief into a handful of months in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and the day that Tom Hanks announced he and his wife Rita Wilson had contracted the infection back in early March was no different than any other. The couple was in Australia for a film shoot when they both tested positive, but have since returned to the Us after self-quarantining and receiving treatment.

Even as his condition is vastly improving, though, Hanks continues to make the news. Keeping up his reputation as one of America’s friendliest stars, he was recently lauded for writing a heartwarming letter to an Australian boy who was being bullied for his name, which has received a new and nasty connotation as a result of the pandemic.

As reported by 7News Gold Coast, Corona De Vries wrote Hanks and Wilson a...

Mark Blum obituary
Madonna and Rosanna Arquette in Recherche Susan désespérément (1985)
Actor known for his film roles in Desperately Seeking Susan and Crocodile Dundee

The actor Mark Blum, who has died aged 69 from complications of the coronavirus, gave a memorable performance in the screwball comedy Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) as a harried, unfaithful hot-tub salesman plunged into New York’s grungy bohemian underbelly when his wife goes missing. Searching for her, he teams up with the devil-may-care Susan, played by Madonna in her first major film role, and is exposed to her wayward, outrageous lifestyle.

Blum’s screen test with the singer followed a similar pattern. After first mistaking her for a bike messenger in the waiting room, he was invited by the director Susan Seidelman to rehearse a scene in which their characters are dancing and talking in a nightclub.

I remember him as funny warm, loving and professional when we made Desperately Seeking Susan in 1985!! Others recalling Blum include Marlo Thomas, Dana Delany, Mark Hamill, Judith Light, Josh Radnor and Cynthia Nixon, among many more.

Read the remembrances below.

In addition to starring on stage, in films and on television, Blum was a sought-after acting teacher with New York’s Hb Studio. His generosity with younger co-stars was noted by both Topher Grace and James Van Der Beek.

Van Der Beek, who appeared with Blum in the 1997 Off Broadway production of Nicky Silver’s comedy My Marriage to Ernest Borgnine, recalled the late actor as “generous and kind,” noting “I learned so much from him about how to be a professional – lessons that got me through the insanity that was to come.” Van Der Beek recalls a particular act of kindness Blum showed to one of their co-stars.

‘Amy and the Orphans’ Theater Review: ‘American Horror Story’ Star Jamie Brewer Steals the Spotlight
Clifton Webb in Bonne à tout faire (1948)
Clifton Webb grieved so much over the death of his 90-year-old mother, Mabelle, that Noel Coward was forced to comment: “It must be terrible to be orphaned at 71.” Coward’s spot-on quip about the epicene star of “Laura” and “Sitting Pretty” also applies to the harried brother-and-sister team in Lindsey Ferrentino’s new play, “Amy and the Orphans,” which opened Thursday at the Roundabout’s Laura Pels Theatre. Maggie and Jacob are closer to 60 when their father passes away, but they are quick to call themselves “orphans,” and as played by Debra Monk and Mark Blum they are also hilarious in their...

Amy Hargreaves and Matt McGorry in How He Fell in Love (2015)
Review: It May Be Called ‘How He Fell in Love,’ But Its Female Star Is The Reason To See It
Amy Hargreaves and Matt McGorry in How He Fell in Love (2015)
The title of writer/director Marc Meyers’ third feature film is a curious thing. Rather than fixate on one half of a relationship, “How He Fell in Love” instead becomes a much fuller look at how a relationship travels from casual acquaintances into unanticipated territory. With a sharp focus on an evolving relationship between Travis (Matt McGorry), an ambling part-time musician and Ellen, a married yoga studio instructor, Meyers foregoes easy judgment or condemnation to give a full view of a love with consequences.

Skillfully tracking the emotional parabola of their affair, “How He Fell in Love” gives breathing room to each stage of their interactions, beginning with their chance meeting at a wedding. As the two spend time together, casually flirting inside the yoga studio and beyond, their coded parsing of clues and discussions with friends afterwards help widen the scope of their potential romantic involvement. Early on in their friendship,...

A Wife Alone Finds Revenge
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Don't get me wrong... guys can be hellish too, but anyone who has ever had a run-in with a vengeful loony with a vagina can attest to this fact. Case in point: the latest "devilish noir" flick to head our way, A Wife Alone.

The film will be available through major cable/satellite and On Demand enabled platforms across the United States on June 10th.

From the Press Release

A feature film by Justin Reichman, A Wife Alone is a dark psychological thriller about an ill-fated marriage in the suburbs of upstate New York. The plot centers around Jane, an attractive young bride who marries a naive investment banker named Park, desperate to marry before his 30th birthday.

The young, ostensibly happy couple buys a quaint house in a nice neighborhood and settles into the suburban dream before a visit to Park's godparents,...
