The Inspiration Behind This Breakout Horror Movie Is Still One of the Most Frightening British Films Ever Made
Image
Ghostwatch, a 1992 BBC film, blurred the line between fact and fiction, influencing films like Late Night with the Devil. The film presented a live investigation into a haunted house, using real BBC personalities and advanced technology to create a sense of reality. Ghostwatch sparked mass panic in England, leading to its banning and the tragic death of a teenager who believed the film's demonic entity possessed him.

In the early days of cinema, the dividing line between fact and fiction was crystal clear. Outside the odd occurrence like the infamous War of the Worlds controversy instigated by a young Orson Welles in the 1930s, audiences generally took for granted that what they heard on the radio and what they saw on television was, more often than not, make-believe. As technology (not to mention storytelling ingenuity) advanced, that line became harder and harder to differentiate.

Ghostwatch At 30: The Brilliant BBC Halloween Stunt That Terrified The Nation
Image
I was still dressed as a mummy when I sat down to watch TV after trick-or-treating on Halloween night in 1992. I was a skinny lad, so binding my limbs tightly in bandages made me look more like a weird spindly white insect than King Tut. Self-conscious of this, I wore my Adidas bench coat over the costume, which completely ruined the effect.

I couldn't tell you what my costume was 12 months earlier or the following year, but Halloween of '92 remains so clear in my mind because that was the night of "Ghostwatch." I loved anything related to the supernatural, so I just couldn't wait: The BBC was conducting a live paranormal investigation into poltergeist activity! It was a big event heavily publicized in the run-up to Halloween, and 11 million viewers tuned in that night. The next day the whole country was talking about it.

"Ghostwatch" wasn't a real live ghost hunt,...

How an Audience Member Saved (and Starred in) ‘Into the Woods’
As they say, if the glass slipper fits! There was more than just one fairytale unfolding in a recent Manchester Royal Exchange production of “Into the Woods” when audience member Melissa Bayern made her professional theater debut as the Witch. Vet British actor Gillian Bevan was originally cast in the role, but when she fell ill and dance captain Rachel Goodwin was forced to fill in (script in-hand), Bayern leapt at the opportunity to step into Bevan’s shoes and left her contact info for director Matthew Xia at the door. Having just played the Witch in a theater course with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, the material was fresh. “It was a case of, ‘Is there a doctor in the house,’ except it was, ‘Is there a witch in the house?’ ” she recently told The Stage. The theater publication reports that Bayern first heard back from Xia politely declining her offer,...

Tom Hardy has Ptsd in Samarkand
Never one to sit on his laurels (or indeed, even take a day off from working), Tom Hardy has attached himself to yet another movie, this time an indie drama called “Samarkand”. Based on a script by bros Greg and Olly Williams (with Greg scheduled to make his feature film directorial debut on the movie), “Smarkdand” would find Hardy playing “a British special forces soldier returning from the Middle East with post-traumatic stress disorder” who then struggles “to re-integrate into society after his tour of duty with the British regiment, the Sas.” Hardy previously worked with the brothers on the short film “Sergeant Slaughter – My Big Brother”, though when he’ll time to actually do “Samarkand” in-between the 20 other films he’s currently got going on is anybody’s guess. Then again, who needs sleep? Here’s a look at the full “Sergeant Slaughter” short film, which co-stars Ben Macleod...

DVD Review: Ghostwatch
Ghostwatch

Stars: Michael Parkinson, Sarah Greene, Craig Charles, Mike Smith, Gillian Bevan | Written by Stephen Volk | Directed by Lesley Manning

Back in 1992, in the halcyon days before Paranormal Activity, The Blair Witch Project and Most Haunted, the BBC used Michael Parkinson to terrify the nation in a one-off TV special called Ghostwatch. Viewers were invited to watch as real-life presenters including Sarah Greene and Craig Charles investigated the spooky goings on in ‘Britain’s most haunted house’ in the hopes of either a few cheap thrills (mostly provided by a hammily hateable Charles) or the uncovering of a hoax, but over 90 minutes they got a hell of a lot more.

Let’s get the bad out of the way first: Ghostwatch has not been treated well by either time or a DVD release. The twenty years since its first broadcast have seen a meteoric rise and fall of found-footage films...
