Pete Best

Trivia

Pete Best

Edit
  • Drummer for The Beatles (August 1960-August 1962).
  • Besides his lack of "chops" as a drummer, the other reason cited for Best's firing from The Beatles was that he'd never tried to fit in as a member of the group; while the other members frequently spent their free time together, Best usually went off on his own, even sitting alone during their breaks between sets. He'd also kept his same duck-tail hairstyle, when the band decided to adopt the "Beatle cut".
  • When he was first let go from The Beatles, manager Brian Epstein offered to put a new group together showcasing Best. Finding this more difficult than expected, Epstein finally pulled some strings with another Liverpool band's manager, who invited Best to join them.
  • In the wake of The Beatles' success, Best was signed to a recording deal on his own, resulting in the dubiously-titled LP "Best Of The Beatles" (a reference to his former band). The album went nowhere, and Best gave up his music career, first becoming a baker, then later a civil servant.
  • Has two brothers, Rory and Roag
  • Mother owned a coffee/club in the family home's basement called the Casbah
  • Belatedly shared in The Beatles' success without him, when early recordings featuring Best on drums were included in 1995's "The Beatles Anthology"; Best's share of the royalties was projected at over $1 million.
  • Mother owned a coffee club called "The Casbah" in the family home's basement. The house still stands to this day, and the basement club is open for tours by appointment.
  • Is portrayed by Scot Williams in Backbeat, 5 garçons dans le vent (1994).
  • In March, 1964, he was living in West Derby, Lancashire, England.
  • Presently touring with his group "The Pete Best Band", featuring music from the 1960-1962 era, prior to the "British Invasion". He also has a one-man show where he talks openly of his days with the Beatles, as well as making personal appearances on TV & radio shows, record/memorabilia collector events, and as a special guest speaker. (2005)
  • Half-brother Roag was fathered by Neil Aspinall, who lived with the Best family in the late 50s/early 60s. Neil later became The Beatles' road manager and now runs The Beatles' record company, Apple.
  • Father of two daughters, Buba and Bonita
  • Due to the Beatles uber-fame, "Pete Best" has been a used term in the music industry for identifying a band member who departs (and is often replaced) before a band (sometimes unexpectedly) makes it to big fame.
