This Creepy Doll From The 90s Became A Trend In India Long Before Labubu Or Annabelle(Photo Credit –Prime Video)
Om Phat Swaha, said by none other than Tatya Vinchu, still sends a chill down the spines of the ’90s Indian kids. Now, many creepy dolls like Annabelle, Chucky, and most recently, Labubu (which people love to flaunt) may have become trendy but for us, desis, none of these “dolls” come as close to us as our own Tatya Vinchu.
Tatya Vinchu is so popular primarily because he is considered India’s original iconic horror doll. He first appeared in the 1993 Marathi horror-comedy film Zapatlela. Tatya was created by director Mahesh Kothare, designed and operated by ventriloquist Ramdas Padhye, and voiced by actor Dilip Prabhavalkar. From 1993 to today, Tatya has been a huge cultural phenomenon, and rightly so!

Subhash K Jha is back with another look back at films, with a This Day That Year installment, this time focussing on Govinda’s brother’s directorial, the odd tale told in Pyar Diwana Hota Hai, which released 23 Years ago.
Govinda’s brother Keerti Kumar directed his star-brother in seven films. Of them, Radha Ka Sangam in 1992 was an honourable misfire with some fabulous songs by Lata Mangeshkar.
Then there was Keerti’s Pyar Diwana Hota Hai, released in 2002 with its weird mixture of mirth and morbidity proved a nerve-wracking experience for the audience.
There are two main categories of films. Those that enlighten and those that entertain. Some do both, while the rest do none. Pyar Deewana Hota Hai…. falls in the none category. It’s a strange story about a small-town boy, Sundar (Govinda), in Mumbai, whose only mission in life is to get a girl to smile and speak to him.

Tom Holland's 1988 film "Child's Play" was initially meant to be a satire of the commercial madness that swept the world when Cabbage Patch Kids proliferated through the marketplace a few years before. What if, "Child's Play" asked, the soul of a vicious serial killer possessed your ultra-hot Christmas toy? The result was a genuinely creepy supernatural thriller about a young boy named Andy (Alex Vincent) his single mom (Catherine Hicks) and the mysterious Good Guy doll who likely contains the personality of Charles Lee "Chucky" Ray (Brad Dourif), known to the police as the Lakeshore Strangler.
Like many of the slasher films of the 1980s, "Child's Play" was extensively sequelized. The mythos of Chucky the killer doll expanded, leading to strange byzantine rules of voodoo magic (Chucky uses a magical amulet and magic spells to shunt his soul into a doll body), as well as inter-doll mating, and a lot of queerness.

’Rrr’ has struck a chord with foreign audiences and its song, ‘Naatu Naatu’, with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which awards the Oscars. Wish there was a category for choreography as well at the Oscars, for, I think, that has created the magic that ‘Naatu Naatu’ has become known for.
We had Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ and, later, Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, both of which made it big at the Oscars. We were thrilled about it. But they were not the products of any of the Indian film industries. They merely had India-related stories.
Quite a few other filmmakers tried for nominations at the Oscars
The earlier one was Mehboob Khan’s ‘Mother India’. They probably did not identify with a woman refusing to compromise even while her kids were starving. It was the post-World War II era and there were stories about women known to compromise...
