While we already provide extensive monthly new-release recommendations and weekly streaming recommendations, as distributors’ roll-outs can vary, this is a one-stop list to share the essential films that may be on a screen near you.

Afternoons of Solitude (Albert Serra)

Albert Serra’s new film Afternoons of Solitude is more akin to two hours of Sky Sports than you’d expect from the guy who once made Story of My Death. Following the rules, if not the spirit, of ever-festival-fashionable observational and direct cinema, we spend most of its runtime in long takes observing Spanish bullfighting rings, our eyes focused on Andrés Roca Rey, a Peruvian “exemplar” of the sport engaged in utmost, ritualized savagery. We’re very sensitized to...

Familiar Touch Review: Sarah Friedland’s Wonderfully Gentle Debut Heralds a New Voice
Image
Note: This review was originally published as part of our Venice 2024 coverage. Familiar Touch opens in theaters on June 20.

In a sunny kitchen in California, Ruth prepares a sandwich with the muscle memory that only a lifetime allows. Bread is toasted and left to cool; dill is picked and chopped efficiently; sour cream, radish, and salmon are arranged to resemble a blooming flower. After going to get ready, she serves it to a man named Steve (H. Jon Benjamin) who she doesn’t seem to recognize. When he tells her he’s an architect, she responds, “My father builds homes. Maybe you’ll meet him one day.” Caught off-guard, her son can only offer a loving smile and say “I’d like that.”

This uncertain space––part clarity, part blur––is the subject of Sarah Friedland’s moving debut feature Familiar Touch. It’s the story of an older woman...

‘Bob’s Burgers’: H. Jon Benjamin Teases Big Family Secret & What It’s Like Playing Drunk Bob
Image
All bets are off in this week’s unhinged episode of Fox’s animated comedy Bob’s Burgers as the Belchers visit Silver Strand, a down-on-its-luck casino in “The Lost City of Atlantic.” Mom Linda’s (voiced by John Roberts) late grandfather Max once tended bar at the gambling house, which features a mermaid tank that mesmerized Linda as a kid. Now, the Belchers are there to cash in casino chips and relive her childhood memories of the smoke-filled spot. Linda and Bob’s (H. Jon Benjamin) children — daughters Tina (Dan Mintz) and Louise (Kristen Schaal) and son Gene (Eugene Mirman) — make their own by raiding the candy bar. But Linda can’t keep her poker face when she learns that Max had a secret daughter with a fellow casino employee — the mermaid she used to marvel at. And now swimming in the tank is Linda’s unsuspecting aunt. “This would...

Familiar Touch Review — Nuanced and Quietly Devastating
Image
After acclaimed showings at the Venice Film Festival and New York Film Festival last fall, Sarah Friedland’s Familiar Touch emerges as one of 2025’s great indie gems — sitting, as of time of writing, tied for the top spot on Metacritic’s highest-rated films of the year. Offering a beautifully nuanced approach to its well-trodden subject matter, Familiar Touch is the type of movie that will move you without feeling like it needlessly tugs at your heartstrings.

Familiar Touch Review

Familiar Touch follows Ruth, an octogenarian, who finds herself struggling to assimilate into her new life after moving into assisted living to receive additional care for her dementia. While Sarah Friedland’s feature debut hits several familiar beats, such as the protagonist struggling in her relationship with her adult child or rebelling against her own decline, it feels like a deconstruction of the preconceived notions we have of aging, whether...

'Now I Talk Like Bob': Bob's Burgers Star Has 'Become' His Character After 15 Years of Voicing the Role
Image
The beloved animated show Bob's Burgers first premiered in 2011, and since recording his lines for the series, voice actor H. Jon Benjamin has been voicing Bob for about 15 years. While he didn't have much in common with the animated character at the start of the show, Benjamin now says that he's basically become a real-life version of Bob Belcher.

Per Variety, Benjamin recently reflected on his casting as the titular character in Bob's Burgers. He said how he'd auditioned for an animated series called Dr. Katz, which future Bob's Burgers creator Loren Bouchard was working on as an editor at the time. As Bouchard was fond of the voiceover work Benjamin was able to bring to animated characters, the pair began to collaborate frequently. When Bob's Burgers was created, Benjamin was the first person who Bouchard had in mind to take on the role of Bob.

“I just kept working with him,...

‘Bob’s Burgers’ Star H. Jon Benjamin Says He’s ‘Become’ Bob as the Show’s Continued: ‘I Didn’t Sound Like This at All 15 Years Ago. Now I Talk Like Bob’
Image
When “Bob’s Burgers” was first released in 2011, few would have guessed it would evolve into a beloved animated mainstay, let alone one of the longest-running comedies on TV. But for H. Jon Benjamin– the voice behind Bob Belcher– it was just the latest step in a decades-long collaboration with creator Loren Bouchard and a continuation of his unconventional path through comedy.

“I was living in Boston doing comedy,” Benjamin recalls while speaking with Variety‘s Artisans presented by HBO. “This comedian, Jonathan Katz, started doing the show ‘Dr. Katz,’ and I auditioned for that.” It was a voiceover role that ended up changing everything. The show birthed a creative network that would eventually lead to “Home Movies,” “Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil,” and, finally, “Bob’s Burgers.” Bouchard, then an editor on “Dr. Katz,” began developing his own shows and continued calling on Benjamin to voice his characters. “I just kept working with him,...

Image
Back after the Memorial Day weekend break, John Oliver wasted no time soaring through a topic needing urgent attention: the air traffic control crisis that has been looming and ongoing for years due to lack of investment.

Beginning Last Week Tonight, the host made a quip about a 2023 headline concerning a FedEx plane that nearly crashed into a Southwest airliner in Austin.

“Well, that is terrifying! Planes should definitely not be landing on top of each other and I say that knowing that there is a nonzero chance Tom Cruise will hear me and immediately greenlight a new Mission: Impossible to do exactly that himself,” Oliver said. “I am not saying that he is trying to die on camera, I’m just saying the only way Tom Cruise passes away peacefully in his bed is if the bed is being dropped into an active volcano to somehow save the ‘live moviegoing experience.

TV Shows That Continued After Cast Members Passed Away
Image
Television has often been described as a mirror of our world. Through various genres and formats, we can see the many ways humankind comes together and interacts with each other, for better or for worse. Just like the people we encounter in real life, the characters on our favorite shows and the people who bring them to life will sometimes have to deal with death.

The cast and crew of Hulu's "Mid-Century Modern" learned this the hard way when the legendary Linda Lavin passed away while the show was in the middle of filming their first season. The Broadway veteran and "Alice" star played Sybil, the wise-cracking, overbearing, and deeply loving mother of Nathan Lane's Bunny Schneiderman, who is the Sophia of the "Golden Girls"-esque series. But when Lavin succumbed to cardiopulmonary arrest in December 2024, her character suffered a similar fate, leaving behind mourners on both sides of the camera.

"We're just going to take this step by step..." Music Box Films has revealed an official trailer for Familiar Touch, a lovely indie drama marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Sarah Friedland. It's worth a watch. This won the Best Actress & Best Director & Best Debut Film awards in the Orizzonti section at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, then went on to play at the Vancouver, London, Tromso, Singapore, AFI Fest, New Films/New Directors Film Festivals as well. Familiar Touch is a coming-of-old-age film about an older woman dealing with memory loss. It's lead by a remarkable performance by Tony nominee Kathleen Chalfant as Ruth. The ultimate destination for adult animation is hiding in plain sight
Image
With hits from ‘The Simpsons’ to ‘Solar Opposites,’ Hulu has quietly built the strongest animated lineup on streaming.

Animated comedies are my comfort food. When life’s chaotic, there’s nothing better than sinking into the couch and putting on an episode of “The Simpsons.” That show has literally been around as long as I have, and it’s still going strong. Then came “Family Guy” about a decade later, and even though the tone is way different, it quickly earned a spot on my go-to list. Between those two, you’ve basically got the blueprint for modern animated comedy. And the best part? They’re both streaming on Hulu, along with a ridiculous number of other hits from FX and Fox. If animated sitcoms are your thing, there’s really no better place to stream. Here’s why Hulu’s the best of the bunch for streaming animated comedy TV shows.

‘Familiar Touch’ Review: A Tale of Memory Loss Rendered in Tender, Sensorial Detail
Image
About an hour into Familiar Touch, Sarah Friedland’s feature directorial debut, a subtle yet striking stylistic rupture occurs. The effects of dementia on octogenarian Ruth Goldman (Kathleen Chalfant) grow gradually more pronounced as her stay in assisted living stretches on. In gentle gestures—most frequently a pronounced pause—Chalfant renders what the disease takes from her character by making present an overwhelming sense of absence.

But when the camera surveys Ruth in a doctor’s chair, following Chalfant’s hands downward as she caresses her chest and arms, the film shifts out of its thus-far straightforward perspective. The scene jumps unexpectedly away from the room to a moment of tender hand-holding that Ruth shares with her doctor at the facility before returning to Ruth grasping her wrist. The tactile has supplanted the temporal, and it jolts the film into an enthralling new register.

This sensorial, rather than sensationalist, approach...

'Resident Alien' Fans Need to See 'People of Earth'
Image
Resident Alien has been a delight since its premiere in 2021, seamlessly blending situational comedy with sci-fi world-building and a quirky imagination. Season 3, perhaps its best yet, premiered more than one year ago, and fans are eagerly awaiting Season 4 as the show heads to the USA Network.

There's a kindness and a deep understanding of the human condition laced throughout that show, and it constantly reminds me of possibly my favorite sci-fi comedy on television, a very similar (and arguably even better) series from 2016 that aired on TBS. It developed a small but loyal cult following in Season 2 after word-of-mouth spread, and was renewed for Season 3. Until it wasn't.

Extraterrestrials and People of Earth

People of Earth was one of the rare shows that critics and audiences agreed was great; it currently has an 89% critics' score and an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Created by David Jenkins (Our Flag Means Death...

Tribbles Used To Be Cute & Cuddly Before Star Trek Changed Them
Image
Tribbles were originally cute and cuddly little balls of fluff before Star Trek kept changing them. Tribbles famously made their Star Trek debut in Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, episode 15, "The Trouble with Tribbles," when Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and his USS Enterprise crew encounter them aboard a space station. When Lt. Uhrua (Nichelle Nichols) brings one of the little creatures up to the Enterprise, one Tribble quickly turns into thousands of Tribbles with truly hilarious results.

Tribbles emit a pleasant cooing sound when held by most humanoids (aside from Klingons), producing a tranquilizing effect on human nervous system, in particular. Tribbles have appeared in numerous Star Trek television shows and movies, both in the background, and as central plot points. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine even revisited "The Trouble with Tribbles" in the excellent season 5 episode, "Trials and Tribble-ations." Although Tribbles were a nuisance to the United Federation of Planets,...

Tribbles Are Proof That Star Trek’s Federation Are Hypocrites
Image
Star Trek's Tribbles may seem like innocuous balls of fluff, but they actually prove that the United Federation of Planets can be hypocritical. Introduced in the iconic Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "The Trouble with Tribbles," Tribbles are small non-intelligent life forms known for their astonishing reproductive rate. As seen in "The Trouble with Tribbles," one of the little creatures could quickly turn into hundreds and then thousands, overrunning even a massive starship or space station. Since their introduction, other Star Trek projects have revisited the Tribbles, revealing more about their troubling history with Starfleet.

The Tribbles have an equally tumultuous history with the Klingon Empire. Although Tribbles emitted a quiet cooing sound when handled by most humanoid species, they reacted negatively toward Klingons. The Klingons saw the Tribbles as a menace to their society and sought to wipe them out entirely. As revealed in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,...
