Terry based Hacksaw Ridge on the documentary The Conscientious Objector - a film he also wrote, directed, and produced.
At age 10, Terry read the book The Unlikeliest Hero - the story of Desmond Doss. At age 12, he met Desmond at summer camp. Years later, Terry would go on to make Desmond's story into the Oscar-winning film Hacksaw Ridge.
