Eriq La Salle on developing ‘On Call’s’ ‘imperfect’ hybrid style and returning to acting
Image
Since his time on ER, Eriq La Salle has focused on directing for most of the past two decades, becoming a staple in the Dick Wolf universe. He's worked on Law & Order: Svu, Law & Order, Law & Order: Organized Crime, Chicago P.D. (including serving as an executive producer for five years), Chicago Med, and FBI. So it was no surprise when he got the call for the prolific producer's new drama On Call.

"They just called up and said, 'Hey, we've got this cool pilot, we'd love you to do it,'" La Salle tells Gold Derby. "I took a look at it and read it in, I don't know, like, 29 minutes, and said 'yes' in 30 minutes. It was just pretty much a no-brainer."

Signing on in 30 minutes is apt since On Call is Wolf's first half-hour series. The Prime Video police drama follows veteran officer Traci Harmon (Troian Bellisario...

Troian Bellisario talks playing a police officer in ‘On Call’, reflects on ‘Pretty Little Liars’ 15th anniversary
Image
In On Call, Troian Bellisario plays Tracy Harmon, a veteran field training officer in the Long Beach Police Department, navigating the mental and physical toll of her job while mentoring rookie officer Alex Diaz (Brandon Larracuente). The role marks a striking shift from her Pretty Little Liars days, and Bellisario admits she was surprised when first approached to play a police officer.

“Tracy Harmon, veteran police officer, 40 years old. I thought, ‘Oh my god, I’m never going to get this,’” she admits. “I’ve never played anyone older than me, and certainly never a cop.” But something in the script clicked. “The minute I started reading her words, I was enthralled. I’d never seen a cop show like this.”

Unlike traditional procedurals, Prime Video's On Call leans heavily into body cam footage and a half-hour drama format, a fusion Bellisario calls “thrilling” and “raw.” The real-time style gives the show a documentary edge,...

Many Dick Wolf shows have been renewed (but not On Call season 2)
Image
Dick Wolf is a very busy man, and has found so much success creating two well-known and franchises at NBC - Law and Order and One Chicago. The creator has got the procedural formula down, so many had high hopes for his new one on Prime Video. Unfortunately, On Call season 2 is not happening as Prime Video has cancelled the show, and the series has become a short-lived one. On the platform at least.

The Troian Bellisario-led serial drama first premiered Jan. 9, 2025 with eight episodes on the streaming service. So Prime Video waited about four months to announce the fate of the show. That's actually not too bad, as other projects have to wait longer sometimes. Upon its release, On Call, created by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf, got mixed reviews from critics but did well with the audience overall.

Many viewers may have come into it not having watched other Dick Wolf shows.

On Call: Prime Video Cancels Police Drama But Season Two Being Shopped Elsewhere
On Call will not be returning for a second season on Prime Video. According to Deadline, the streaming service has canceled that police drama after one season of eight episodes.

The series from Wolf Entertainment will be shopped to other outlets, though, so viewers could see it return to the small screen at some point. Peacock is one possible home for the series.

Eriq La Salle, Lori Loughlin, Rich Ting, Troian Bellisario, and Brandon Larracuente star in the series, which follows the police officers of the Long Beach Police Department. The series focuses on a veteran female training officer (Belisario) and her rookie male ride-along (Larracuente).

The following was said about the decision to cancel the series:

“Indeed, Amazon a few weeks ago approached the producers of the...

The Fate of Another Dick Wolf Show Has Been Decided by Prime Video
Image
Dick Wolf's first streaming procedural, On Call, is not returning for Season 2 on Prime Video. Deadline reports that the show, starring Troian Bellisario and Brandon Larracuente, has been canceled at the global streamer after Prime Video passed on another season. However, there is some good news for fans of the half-hour police drama. Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television are engaged in talks for a second season on another platform. The cancellation is a surprising development, but not entirely unforeseen given the significant time-lapse between Season 1's debut date and news of renewal or cancellation.

It is being reported that Prime Video was considering a two-season renewal, but the deal came with strings attached. They wanted the two production companies to reduce the series' premium, but that was a non-starter for them, and the two-season deal fell apart. TV economics are changing, and sometimes what worked before no longer does.

Police Series 'On Call' from Dick Wolf Canceled After One Season
Image
Cancelations seem to be the name of the game right now, as hot on the heels of CBS’ decimation of its crime series slate, and NBC’s huge ax swing, Amazon is now in a chopping mood and has decided not to give a renewal to the half-hour action crime drama On Call. This means the series joins a long list of one-season wonders, despite coming from Dick Wolf’s Wolf Entertainment and having a great reaction from audiences.

The decision not to pick up On Call for a second season came as a surprise to many, especially considering that, despite getting a mixed reaction from critics, the series scored an impressive 92% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it seems that this may not be end for the show, as Deadline reported that the team behind the show are already looking for a new home, with Peacock being among a handful of streamers being courted.

“When you left me for dead”: Prime Video’s ‘We Were Liars’ Trailer Is Just ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ But With Amnesia
Image
Emily Alyn Lind plays the lead, Cadence Sinclair, in Prime Video’s new series, We Were Liars. The series is based on E. Lockhart’s 2014 novel of the same name, which received critical acclaim. The teaser trailer of the show just dropped, and from the way it is presented, fans couldn’t help but immediately think of Freeform’s thriller series Pretty Little Liars.

At the beginning, it appears that we are in for a summer vacation show until the mood quickly changes into something much darker. Julie Plec of The Vampire Diaries fame and Carina Adly MacKenzie of The Originals fame serve as the co-showrunners of the show.

Prime Video Pulls the Plug on Dick Wolf's New Cop Drama With 92% Audience Score
Image
Fans of On Call on Prime Video have gotten some bad news. It has been revealed that the show will not be returning with new episodes on the streaming platform, but not all hope is lost for fans of the series just yet.

Per Deadline, On Call will not be moving forward with a second season on Prime Video. The news may come as a surprise to fans, as the series was a hit with viewership, reaching No. 1 on Prime Video's streaming chart in the U.S. after simultaneously dropping all eight episodes of its freshman season in January. It was also largely enjoyed by viewers, earning a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, despite its mixed critics' rating of 53%.

Fans shouldn't give up hope just yet on On Call. Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television are reportedly shopping the series to other platforms, and given its popularity, there's a good chance...

‘On Call’ Done On Prime Video After Renewal Talks Fall Through; Drama Being Shopped To Other Buyers
Image
Exclusive: Amazon is not proceeding with a second season of half-hour action police drama On Call, from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, sources tell Deadline. The series, starring Troian Bellisario and Brandon Larracuente, has been shopped to other platforms, and two of them have engaged in discussions about a potential second season, I hear.

This is a somewhat surprising development as On Call, created by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf, has done well, reaching the #1 slot on Prime Video in the U.S. following the January 9 drop of all eight episodes and earning 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. (The series received mixed reactions from critics.)

Indeed, Amazon a few weeks ago approached the producers of the show about a two-season renewal, sources said. It was looking good until the offer was accompanied by a request to reduce the premium on the series, I hear. Under the widely used current cost-plus streaming compensation model,...

This New Police Drama Has Been Dominating Prime Video's Top 10 for Nearly 2 Months (& You Should Really Watch It)

Nearly two months after its Prime Video premiere, On Call remains in the streamer's daily Top 10 ranking. The police drama series hails from executive producer Dick Wolf, a master of the procedural drama genre.

According to FlixPatrol, On Call has been hovering around the No. 5 and No. 6 spots in Prime Video's Top 10 this week. Chris Pine to Star in 'Fargo' Creator Noah Hawley's 'Nowhere Fast' Feature
Image
Chris Pine is planning to go Nowhere Fast with Fargo creator Noah Hawley. The movie star and FX's favorite television creator are teaming up for the latter's new crime thriller, a film about a small-town criminal in Texas who unwittingly kills the nephew of his boss. The movie is currently titled Nowhere Fast— as you may have guessed from the first line of this story — and sounds like exactly the sort of dark comedy of errors we've come to love and expect from Noah Hawley.

In a new, exclusive report from Variety, it was revealed that Pine would star in the film slated to be written and directed by Hawley, who is perhaps most well known for his work on Fargo, but also created the criminally under-appreciated Legion, as well as Hulu's forthcoming Alien franchise series, Alien: Earth. He got his start in television working on the deeply popular series Bones,...

Troian Bellisario's New Police Drama Is Sitting High On Prime Video's Top Charts
Image
Troian Bellisario has made her mark in a number of projects across several genres. Her TV career before "On Call" includes notable guest turns in shows like "NCIS" and "Suits," as well as the title she's best known for: Freeform's teen drama series "Pretty Little Liars," where she starred as central character Spencer Hasting throughout the show's duration -- and eventually also got to portray the villainous Alex Drake, Spencer's twin sister.

Meanwhile, Bellisario's movie résumé ranges from artsy drama and comedy to science fiction and outright horror. In 2015, she notably starred in the remake of Pascal Laugier's "Martyrs" (2008), one of the best (and most gruesome scary) horror movies ever filmed. While the U.S. version didn't quite reach the blood-spattered heights of the French original, Bellisario's own visibility has only continued to increase since that film ... and with her newest success story on Amazon Prime Video, her...

'The Best We Could Possibly Be': On Call Stars Discuss Amazon Cop Drama
Image
Prime Video's police drama On Call has become a hit with audiences, and the primary reason why is the performances of stars Troian Bellisario and Brandon Larracuente. As veteran patrol officer Traci Harmon and her rookie partner Alex Diaz, the two create a partnership that viewers get to watch grow organically over the course of eight episodes -- from their first meeting to life-changing moments between them.

A police drama executive produced by Law & Order creator Dick Wolf, On Call premiered on Prime Video in early January. The story centers on the rookie Alex Diaz (Larracuente) and the veteran officer Traci Harmon (Bellisario) as they patrol Long Beach, California. The eight episodes use bodycam, dash camera, and cellphone footage to visualize the experience, with Lori Loughlin, Rich Ting, and Eriq Lasalle also part of the On Call cast.

In an interview with TVLine, Larracuente reacted to the fact that Harmon recommends that Diaz restart his probation. Diaz views this as a betrayal, lashing out at Harmon, but Larracuente says that his character comes around to accepting that his partner only wants the best for him. Bellisaro echoed the sense...

Eight years after wrapping up her run as Spencer Hastings on Pretty Little Liars, Troian Bellisario has finally added another television hit to her filmography. On Call, the latest cop show from Dick Wolf, has become a major streaming success on Prime Video.

The show's ratings success comes amid mixed reviews from critics, with review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes noting that On Call has a 54 percent approval rating. Cop Crime Thriller Show With 90% Audience Score Becomes Streaming Hit
Image
Shows about police officers have been around for decades. The conflict and dangerous situations that come with the profession are evidently fertile ground for on-screen drama. Since 2000, a number of cop shows have come and gone, some of which put unique spins on the classic procedural formula. Justified takes the police thriller and mixes it with the Western, Fargo adds comedy, and Hannibal adds horror.

Sometimes, though, audiences are just looking for a more typical show about cops. Recent shows like We Own This City and Mare of Easttown delivered on this front, as has True Detective, The Shield, S.W.A.T., and The Rookie. There's one cop thriller show, however, that has just recently released on Prime Video, and it's quickly established itself as a win with audiences for its grounded storytelling and compelling character drama.

Mare of Easttown season 2 is not yet confirmed, but it has been reported to be a possibility.

On Call Season 2: Will It Happen? Everything We Know
Image
Dick Wolf has brought his signature brand of police procedural to Amazon Prime Video in On Call, but will the gritty cop show score a second season? Created for the small screen by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf, the half-hour police drama follows veteran Long Beach Pd training officer Traci Harmon (Troian Bellisario) and her new rookie partner, Officer Alex Diaz (Brandon Larracuente), as they try to perform their duty in the wake of a tragedy on the force. Being a streaming-exclusive, On Call is a bit more brash than other Dick Wolf projects, but is nevertheless just as accessible.

Originally meant to be an exclusive program on the ill-fated IMBb TV streamer, the series eventually made its way to Prime Video where it premiered in the early days of 2025. Though reviews have been somewhat middling for the new cop show, On Call has proven its advantage over network TV...

On Call's Elliot Wolf & Tim Walsh Are "Kicking Ideas Around" For Dick Wolf Universe Crossovers
Image
Elliot Wolf and Tim Walsh have teamed up for On Call. Wolf finds himself with the full reins on a live-action program for the first time in his career, as his prior work was exclusively in the serialized podcast world. Producing televised crime dramas is in Wolf's DNA, as his father, Television Academy Hall of Famer Dick Wolf, is responsible for fronting the likes of Law & Order and the various Chicago shows. Walsh worked with Wolf's father on Chicago P.D., having produced 69 episodes of the series from 2014 until 2017.

On Call embodies the spirit of the Dick Wolf projects of yesteryear but makes a grand effort to carve out its own niche. The Prime Video series follows Officer Harmon (Troian Bellisario), a jaded veteran cop paired with rookie policeman Officer Diaz (Brandon Larracuente) to patrol the streets of Long Beach, California.

'On Call' Is the "Polar Opposite" of Troian Bellisario's Last Hit Show
Image
For Troian Bellisario, starring in Prime Video's gritty new procedural, On Call, couldn’t be more different than her Pretty Little Liars experience. In that show, Bellisario played Spencer Hastings, a people-pleasing yet highly competitive young woman who delivered some of the greatest lines on the popular Freeform show, which ran for seven seasons from 2010-2017. It’s another world entirely for the Dick Wolf-produced On Call, but the actress still credits her time on Pretty Little Liars for honing her chops.

“It’s very different,” Bellisario told MovieWeb about her On Call vs. Pll experience. “What was really wonderful stepping from that show [into On Call], is that you literally couldn't have, like, shaken a bag and gotten a more polar opposite world." Bellisario continued:

"It’s a primarily male-dominated world [in On Call]. I mean, my hair was never down except for one time. I remember I showed up on set with my...

'On Call': Dick Wolf Police Procedural Tops Prime Video Streaming Chart
Image
Law & Order creator Dick Wolf's new police procedural, On Call, recently debuted on Prime Video and is already dominating the streamer's Top 10 list. The show is currently sitting at number one, was co-created by Tim Walsh (Chicago P.D.) and Elliot Wolf (Law & Order: Criminal Justice System), and is the first straight-to-streaming project for the legendary producer.

On Call follows seasoned Officer Traci Harmon and rookie Officer Alex Diaz as they field calls in Long Beach, California. The production of the show is gritty and realistic, relying on handheld cameras along with body cam footage. It often feels like it's a documentary series rather than a dramatic police procedural.

Rounding out the cast is Lori Loughlin (Full House) as Lieutenant Bishop, Rich Ting (Squid Game) as Sergeant Tyson Koyama, and the always great Eriq La Salle (ER) as Sergeant Lasman. La Salle has been a producer at Wolf Entertainment for several years,...

Fans Waiting For The Return Of Law & Order Should Check Out Prime Video’s New Cop Show, And It’s A Quick Watch

Prime Video's new police procedural, On Call, is the perfect show to watch while waiting for the Law & Order franchise to return. On Call Review: Prime Video Series Is What TV Needs Right Now
Image
The following contains major spoilers for On Call Season 1, now streaming on Prime Video. It also contains discussion of drug use and violence.

Prime Video and Wolf Entertainment have outdone themselves with On Call, which is the perfect police drama for a modern audience. At a time when every TV crime show is scrutinized and met with cynicism, this one works no matter what someone's point of view. It's the anti-procedural that also preserves what fans love about procedurals, from the people who know the genre better than anyone.

On Call centers on a pair of police officers, veteran Traci Harmon and rookie Alex Diaz, as they patrol the streets of Long Beach. Creators Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf weave in some ongoing plot threads regarding the murder of another officer and Traci's past, but the most important part of the show is the day-to-day that the characters face.

Prime Video has been a major topic of conversation in the streaming world lately thanks to the recent release of Red One and The Fall Guy, both of which have been competing for the streamer’s top spot for the last few weeks. Monica Raymund's new TV role is going to devastate Chicago Fire fans
Image
Monica Raymund will always hold a special place in the hearts of Chicago Fire fans. She played Gabriela Dawson for several seasons, and her romance with Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer), while complicated, was one of the defining relationships on the show.

It was sad to see her go, but it has also been exciting to see her venture out and attempt different roles on the small screen. One Chicago fans perked up when they saw Raymund was cast in the new Prime show On Call. A Dick Wolf production, On Call seemed like a perfect use of the actor's skill set.
