Since his time on ER, Eriq La Salle has focused on directing for most of the past two decades, becoming a staple in the Dick Wolf universe. He's worked on Law & Order: Svu, Law & Order, Law & Order: Organized Crime, Chicago P.D. (including serving as an executive producer for five years), Chicago Med, and FBI. So it was no surprise when he got the call for the prolific producer's new drama On Call.

"They just called up and said, 'Hey, we've got this cool pilot, we'd love you to do it,'" La Salle tells Gold Derby. "I took a look at it and read it in, I don't know, like, 29 minutes, and said 'yes' in 30 minutes. It was just pretty much a no-brainer."

“Tracy Harmon, veteran police officer, 40 years old. Dick Wolf is a very busy man, and has found so much success creating two well-known and franchises at NBC - Law and Order and One Chicago. The creator has got the procedural formula down, so many had high hopes for his new one on Prime Video. Unfortunately, On Call season 2 is not happening as Prime Video has cancelled the show, and the series has become a short-lived one. On the platform at least.

The Troian Bellisario-led serial drama first premiered Jan. 9, 2025 with eight episodes on the streaming service. So Prime Video waited about four months to announce the fate of the show. That's actually not too bad, as other projects have to wait longer sometimes. Upon its release, On Call, created by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf, got mixed reviews from critics but did well with the audience overall.

Many viewers may have come into it not having watched other Dick Wolf shows.

On Call will not be returning for a second season on Prime Video. According to Deadline, the streaming service has canceled that police drama after one season of eight episodes.

The series from Wolf Entertainment will be shopped to other outlets, though, so viewers could see it return to the small screen at some point. Peacock is one possible home for the series.

However, there is some good news for fans of the half-hour police drama. Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television are engaged in talks for a second season on another platform. The cancellation is a surprising development, but not entirely unforeseen given the significant time-lapse between Season 1's debut date and news of renewal or cancellation.

It is being reported that Prime Video was considering a two-season renewal, but the deal came with strings attached. The decision not to pick up On Call for a second season came as a surprise to many, especially considering that, despite getting a mixed reaction from critics, the series scored an impressive 92% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it seems that this may not be end for the show, as Deadline reported that the team behind the show are already looking for a new home, with Peacock being among a handful of streamers being courted.

The entertainment company hosted an Emmy season kick-off luncheon on Friday afternoon (April 11) at the Sls Hotel in Los Angeles.

Per Deadline, a new FBI spinoff series is in development with a focus on the CIA. Titled FBI: CIA, the series is eyed for a potential series order for the 2025-26 television season, but it hasn't been officially greenlit just yet. Wolf is writing the series alongside FBI: Most Wanted showrunner David Hudgins, Nicole Perlman (Captain Marvel), and former CIA officer David Chasteen. The possible spinoff would first be given a backdoor pilot in an upcoming episode of FBI to introduce the new characters.

Eight years after wrapping up her run as Spencer Hastings on Pretty Little Liars, Troian Bellisario has finally added another television hit to her filmography. On Call, the latest cop show from Dick Wolf, has become a major streaming success on Prime Video.

According to FlixPatrol, On Call has been No. 1 on TV for Prime Video since Jan. 13, with the procedural drama series being responsible for knocking the reality competition series Beast Games from YouTuber Mr. Beast out of the top spot. The show's ratings success comes amid mixed reviews from critics, with review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes noting that On Call has a 54 percent approval rating. Originally set up at IMDb TV (later Freevee), On Call moved over to Prime Video, with all eight episodes dropping onto the streamer on Jan. 9. Besides Bellisario, On Call stars Brandon Larracuente, Eriq Lasalle, Lori Loughlin, Rich Ting, and Monica Raymund.

Elliot Wolf and Tim Walsh have teamed up for On Call. Wolf finds himself with the full reins on a live-action program for the first time in his career, as his prior work was exclusively in the serialized podcast world. Producing televised crime dramas is in Wolf's DNA, as his father, Television Academy Hall of Famer Dick Wolf, is responsible for fronting the likes of Law & Order and the various Chicago shows. Walsh worked with Wolf's father on Chicago P.D., having produced 69 episodes of the series from 2014 until 2017.
