Vereen Bell(1911-1944)

Son of Georgia State Supreme Court Judge R.C. Bell, Vereen McNeill Bell was graduated from Davidson College (North Carolina) in 1932 and later studied writing in Louisiana. He served as associate editor of _American Boy/Youth's Companion_ magazine for two years, then became a freelance writer. Volunteered for U.S. Navy duty in 1943. He died in WWII while serving as a lieutenant in the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea. In tribute to his career, the Georgia Legislature renamed the entrance highway to the Okefenokee Swamp the Vereen Bell Memorial Highway. Davidson College currently offers a Vereen Bell Award for creative writing.
