After attending school, he first completed community service in a youth education facility. Beckmann then trained as a radio and television technician at the University of Cologne. There he also studied German as well as theater, film and television studies. Beckmann worked for WDR as a freelancer from 1980. He delivered documentary, cultural and music contributions for the program "Aktuelle Hour". In 1985 Beckmann also began working for the WDR sports department. In 1987 he created some TV reports. In 1988, Beckmann moderated the shows "Dreizeit" and "Flic-Flac" on NDR. In 1989 he returned to WDR to host the "Offshow" alongside Helge Schneider. In 1990, Beckmann switched to private television, initially joining "Premiere" as head of the sports department. From 1992 he worked for "SAT.1", where he headed the sports program area and launched the football programs "ran" and "ranissimo".

In 1993 he was promoted to program director of the private broadcaster. Two years later, Beckmann created the "SAT.1" programs "ran-Exklusiv" and "ran story". In 1999, Beckmann returned to public television, where he initially moderated the Saturday evening show "Guinness - the show of records" for ARD. He also developed and produced the talk show "Beckmann" for "First", which has since been broadcast regularly under his moderation. Beckmann was awarded the "Golden Camera" in 1995. He received several other international television awards. His broadcast format "ran" was named the best studio program three times by "Sport-Bild" from 1995 to 1997. On the occasion of the 2000 World Cup, the journalist demonstrated his skills as a live commentator. In addition to his TV appearances, Beckmann also became managing partner of his production company "Beckground TV + Filmproduktion GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburg".

Meanwhile, he wrote as a columnist for the Hamburg weekly newspaper "Die Zeit" and for "Welt am Sonntag". Beckmann was also appointed moderator for the new ARD sports show, which was broadcast from August 2, 2003, and which returned the Bundesliga premiere to the first program on public television after 14 years. The new edition of the legendary broadcast format, which contributed to German television and Bundesliga history from 1961 to 1991, will also be moderated by Gerhard Delling and directed by Steffen Simon. In 2005 he received the "Peter von Zahn Prize". Beckmann was also active as a live reporter at numerous major sporting events such as the 2004 European Football Championship. In 2006 he commented on the broadcast of the FIFA World Cup final for ARD. For his interview with Bert Dietz on May 21, 2007, he received the German Television Prize 2007 in the "Best Moderation Information" category. In 2008 he was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit.
