When "National Lampoon's Van Wilder" surprised its distributor, Artisan Entertainment, by grossing $38 million worldwide on a $5 million budget in 2002, the film industry had no choice but to sit up and examine why this teen-skewing sex comedy far outperformed pricier studio offerings like "Slackers," "Sorority Boys," and "Stealing Harvard." All told, it's a lousy movie, but casting director Barbara Fiorentino unquestionably struck gold by gifting director Walt Becker, who would go on to make even lousier movies, with such primed-for-stardom actors as Kal Penn, Simon Helberg, and Ryan Reynolds.

As the title character, Reynolds worked a more-than-minor miracle by coming on like a Bill Murray-Chevy Chase hybrid. He was flippant as hell, but exuded a sexiness that eluded Chase in his "Saturday Night Live" prime. Reynolds was so charismatic that you wanted to laugh at his every utterance, but the script and Becker's direction stymied him at every turn.

Wild Hogs 2: Bachelor Ride was canceled due to Disney's focus on big-budget movies like Tron: Legacy, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and John Carter. The poor performance of Old Dogs, starring John Travolta, and other comedies like College Road Trip, likely influenced Disney's decision to cancel the sequel. Wild Hogs' negative critical reception may have also contributed to the cancellation of the sequel.

Exclusive: Independent Artist Group (Iag) is making a big push in lit with the hire of A3 Artists Agency’s Adam Kanter.

The company is looking to bolster its ranks with directors and writers with Kanter becoming Head of Motion Pictures at the company.

Kanter, who spent three years as Head of A3’s Motion Picture literary department and partner, will bring a slew of clients with him including Girls Trip’s Malcolm Lee, Get Smart’s Pete Segal and There’s Something About Mary’s Bobby Farrelly.

The move was just announced internally by Iag CEO Jim Osborne and EVP, Head of Content Development Kyle Loftus.

The move will see Iag, which was created after APA merged with music touring agency Artist Group International last summer, look to build out its director and writing clients, bringing in more agents and helmers and scribes.

The Oscars have announced that 276 feature films are eligible for this year’s Academy Awards, with nomination voting set to begin Thursday, Jan. 27 until Tuesday, Feb. 1.

Last year, the Academy extended the eligibility year until Feb. 28, 2021 due to the pandemic, which produced 366 eligible films, the largest number of submissions since 1970. With only 10 months in this period, 2022’s eligibility list is on par with previous submission years.

Paramount Pictures has announced it is developing a sequel to 2021’s family-friendly adventure “Clifford the Big Red Dog.” The studio has not disclosed whether the newest installment will play only in theaters or simultaneously on digital platforms, like the original.

The first film premiered in theaters earlier in November and has since generated $34 million at the domestic box office while playing concurrently on Paramount Plus. Though the company didn’t provide any tangible metrics, Paramount says “Clifford the Big Red Dog” has become the nascent streaming service’s most-watched original film to date. It should be noted that Paramount Plus rebranded from CBS All Access last March with limited cinematic offerings, so “Clifford” didn’t have much competition to cement its place as the streamer’s most popular new film.

The live-action family movie based on the 1963 Norman Bridwell children’s classic book, opened on Nov. 10 in theaters and dropped on Paramount+ in homes day and date. The movie has grossed $34.6M stateside to date. Clifford in his first weekend on the studio’s Ott service was the most watched original film to date. No release date has been set yet for the sequel, and it’s yet to be determined whether the film gets a hybrid or exclusive theatrical window.

The news about a Clifford sequel comes in the wake of Paramount greenlighting a sequel to Paw Patrol: The Movie, that movie grossing $130.1M worldwide and buzzed to be a profitable title for the Melrose lot, even with a day and date release stategy on Paramount+ in the U.S.

Owing to concerns about the spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19 and the impact it may have on theatrical revenues, Paramount has pulled its upcoming family film “Clifford the Big Red Dog” from its release schedule, TheWrap has confirmed.

The film was originally set for Sept. 17. But given that the situation with Covid-19 remains uncertain as large numbers of unvaccinated people directly aid the spread of the disease, Paramount will be making a decision on the film’s new release date at a later time.

While we got a first look at “Clifford The Big Red Dog” — which horrified some because of its blood-red color and kaiju size — the first full trailer for the live-action film shows just how impractical having a pet of that size in New York would be.

This trailer shows Clifford playing with another dog and accidentally licking it up into its mouth before spitting it back out. It also shows Clifford chasing giant inflatable balls in which people in the park are rolling around inside for exercise, only for Clifford to proudly knock them across Central Park and carry the deflated shells back to his humans.

“This dog is killing me,” Clifford’s owner (played by Jack Whitehall) says in the trailer.

The first full trailer for “Clifford The Big Red Dog” also gives a look at some of the film’s co-stars, including Kenan Thompson, Tony Hale and John Cleese.

Paramount Pictures released the first look at its adaptation of the Scholastic’s popular children’s book Clifford the Big Red Dog and the large canine looked very red… or something close to it. After Paramount debuted a first look at the new CGI version of the children’s classic “Clifford the Big Red Dog” on Wednesday, fans took to the internet to express their displeasure at the title Labrador retriever’s “scary as hell” appearance.

A3 Artists Agency has hired industry veterans Andy Patman and Adam Kanter as partners in an effort to build its literary division and grow the company.

Patman has been hired as co-head of television content and Kanter has become co-head of motion pictures.

Patman spent more than 20 years at Paradigm, where he sold “Desperate Housewives” to ABC and represented William Broyles, Marc Cherry, David Henry Hwang, Robert and Michelle King, and Kenny Ortega.

Kanter spent 24 years at CAA before joining Paradigm in 2014 in the motion picture literary department. He was let go in March as part of layoffs that hit more than 100 Paradigm employees amid fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic. Kanter had been involved with “The Bourne Identity” franchise, “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “Rescue Me” and “Suits” and has represented Malcolm D. Lee, Pete Segal, Joe Johnston, Walt Becker, Carl Franklin, and Amy Heckerling.

Paramount Pictures and Entertainment One have closed a deal to co-finance “Clifford The Big Red Dog” and “Monster Problems,” with “Maze Runner” star Dyan O’Brien.

Under the deal, announced Thursday, eOne will distribute all rights directly in Canada and the UK, excluding television in the UK, and Paramount shall distribute all other rights including in the Us.

“Monster Problems” is directed by Michael Matthews and stars O’Brien, Michael Rooker, Dan Ewing, Jessica Henwick, and Arianna Greenblatt. Brian Duffield and Craig Johnson wrote the project. Paramount will produce alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen via their 21 Laps banner. John Starke will serve as an executive producer. Production on the film began in March.
