Matthew Perry Remembered as Charlie Puth Sings ‘Friends’ Theme at Emmys
Image
Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers took the stage at the 2023 Emmys to pay tribute to their former colleague Norman Lear, in addition to other notable television figures who passed away since the previous ceremony.

Charlie Puth and The War and Treaty — comprised of Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter — performed the former’s hit 2015 song “See You Again” for the In Memoriam segment. They finished the segment with a rendition of the Friends theme song that coincided with Matthew Perry being featured as the final name in the video tribute.

In keeping with the ceremony’s theme of celebrating television reunions, Reiner and Struthers reminisced about their time together as co-stars on All in the Family, the classic CBS sitcom that debuted in 1971 and ran for nine seasons.

“There’s a Yiddish word that describes Norman’s genius — it’s ‘kochleffel,'” Reiner said. “For all you non-Jews out there,...

The First Movie in the Purge Saga Could Have Been Very Different
Image
It’s been 10 years since The Purge, the original installment of the ongoing Purge franchise, was released. Back then, neither Blumhouse, Universal nor even director James DeMonaco imagined how that movie would kick off one of the most successful horror franchises of the last few years.

2013’s The Purge presented to the world a dystopian America where the government has decided to celebrate a free-from-consequences crime night once a year for 12 hours. During that time, people are allowed to rob, torture and even kill, and nothing will happen to them... legally speaking.

The story focuses on the Shandin family, who are getting ready to go through an ordinary Purge night locked at their secure home, which is protected by the family head (Ethan Hawke) who dedicates himself to build security systems for rich families to use during that awful night. Everything changes when an intruder gets into the house and Purgers come looking for him.

Beasley sparkled as the retired minister Charles Blackwell in the Robert Duvall-starring and directed The Apostle (1997) and appeared in such other films as V.I. Warshawski (1991), The Mighty Ducks (1992), Rudy (1993), Untamed Heart (1993), Losing Isaiah (1993), Little Big League (1994), Crazy in Alabama (1997), The General’s Daughter (1999), The Sum of All Fears (2002), the 2004 remake of Walking Tall and Firestarter (2022).

Via Zoom: Director Stefan Forbes Wants You to ‘Hold Your Fire’
Image
Chicago – Police reform and procedural alternatives in the U.S. continue to be in a hurricane of evolution. Despite the attention that the George Floyd incident brought to the perception, the law enforcement culture continues to resist. Stefan Forbes goes back to the past (1973), to inform them (and us) that change can work with his new documentary “Hold Your Fire.”

Rating: 4.5/5.0

“Hold Your Fire” is set in the borough of Brooklyn, New York City. It is 1973, and when Shu’aib Raheem and his friends attempt to steal guns from a sports store to be used for self-defense, it sparked the longest hostage siege in the New York Police history. NYPD psychologist Harvey Schlossberg lobbied to avert a bloodbath by using newly developed negotiation techniques, to save the lives of the hostages, police and the four young Muslim men at the heart of the conflict. “Hold Your Fire” is as thrilling...

“Firestarter” Fizzles Out
“Firestarter”, the new science fiction horror feature, directed by Keith Thomas, starring Zac Efron, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Sydney Lemmon, Kurtwood Smith, John Beasley, Michael Greyeyes and Gloria Reuben, has fizzled out at the box office earning only 3.8 million domestic and 5.8 million worldwide over the weekend:

The original "Firestarter" feature starred Drew Barrymore as 'Charlie McGee', who develops 'pyrokinesis':

"...score 'Andrew' and 'Charlie McGee', are a father-daughter pair on the run from a government agency known as 'The Shop'. During his college years, Andy had participated in a Shop experiment dealing with 'Lot 6', a drug with hallucinogenic effects similar to LSD. The drug gave his future wife, 'Victoria Tomlinson', minor telepathic abilities, and him an autohypnotic mind domination ability known as 'the Push'.

"Both his and Vicky's powers are physiologically limited. In his case, overuse of the Push gives him crippling migraine headaches and minute brain hemorrhages,...

Box Office: ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Second Weekend Set to Put Out ‘Firestarter’
Image
The sorcerer continues to reign supreme in North America’s multiplexes of madness. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” should easily top the domestic box office in its second weekend.

The Marvel superhero’s standalone sequel took in 16.7 million on Friday from 4,534 locations, marking an 81 drop from its massive 90 million opening day tally a week ago. As with most Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, “Strange 2” is revealing itself to be a frontloaded box office affair, though there isn’t much on May’s release slate that looks to pose much competition except for Focus Features’ “Downtown Abbey: A New Era” next week and Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” on Memorial Day weekend.

After the expected plummet from a fanatic-packed opening day tally, “Multiverse of Madness” should balance out to around a 67 drop for the weekend. That’s on the steeper side of sophomore weekend drops for a Marvel Studios entry,...

Movie Review: Firestarter
Image
Firestarter doesn’t exactly have a legacy to uphold. Stephen King’s 1980 novel is not considered one of his signature works. Derivative of Carrie (1974), but without its emotional depth and horror, the novel is a pulpy and fitfully entertaining mess. But its pyrokinetic heroine and the suspenseful chase structure could lend themselves to a gripping film adaptation. And maybe one day, they will.

The latest adaptation of Firestarter, however, isn’t it. Both an adaptation of the novel and a remake of the largely derided 1984 film, the movie is a disappointing endeavor hampered by a weak script, lifeless acting, and unconvincing special effects. A few atmospheric and technical flourishes keep it from being a total dumpster fire, but the spark just isn’t there.

The film starts with an intriguing credits sequence, observing young Andy McGee (Zac Efron) and his wife, Vicky (Sydney Lemmon), as they volunteer for a medical...

‘Firestarter (2022)’ Review
Image
Stars: Zac Efron, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Sydney Lemmon, Kurtwood Smith, John Beasley, Michael Greyeyes, Gloria Reuben | Written by Scott Teems | Directed by Keith Thomas

Zac Efron stars in this Blumhouse-produced remake of the 1984 thriller, based on a novel by Stephen King. Unfortunately, though the Blumhouse name is usually a sign of reasonable quality, something seems to have gone wrong this time round, because Firestarter is a distinct disappointment that lacks anything even remotely resembling a spark.

The plot begins with a distortion-heavy flashback sequence that plays during the opening credits and establishes that Andy McGee (Zac Efron) and girlfriend Vicky Tomlinson were both part of an experimental programme in their college years, where they were given a dose of a low-grade hallucinogen called Lot-6 and exhibited special powers. Years later, Andy and Vicky, now married, are on the run with their pre-teen daughter Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), who’s beginning...

All the Spoilers From the "Firestarter" Remake

Based on the novel by Stephen King, "Firestarter" finds the McGee family trying to understand their powers and living their lives quietly. And now that Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) is coming into her powers, she's the target of a dark organization that wants to capture her and study her. The quick 94-minute movie gets you from beginning to end in no time at all - here's everything that goes down.

How "Firestarter" Begins

When Andy (Efron) and Vicky (Lemmon) were college students, they decided to be subjects in an experiment they don't know a whole lot about. We get glimpses of flashbacks as Andy and Vicky, who are both orphans, are questioned about their family history, health,...

Review: Firestarter (2022) Effectively Modernizes the Themes at the Heart of Stephen King’s Story, But Still Falls Short
Image
Nearly 40 years after the release of Mark L. Lester’s Firestarter adaptation, we have a new take on Stephen King’s classic story, this time with Keith Thomas (The Vigil) at the helm. And while this new iteration effectively modernizes some of the concepts and themes at the heart of King’s story and features several killer set pieces that showcase Thomas’ capabilities as a director to boot, where Firestarter (2022) falls short is in its screenplay by Scott Teems that never quite nails the heart of the characters that originally made King’s story so compelling in the first place. Ryan Kiera Armstrong definitely makes for a compelling Charlie McGee this time around—I just wish we were given more reason to root for her character than what we see in this version of Firestarter, resulting in an adaptation that is solid overall, but does feel like it falls short in some ways as well.

‘Stoker Hills’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Tony Todd, David Gridley, Vince Hill-Bedford, Steffani Brass, Eric Etebari, William Lee Scott, Tyler Clark, John Beasley | Written by Jonah Kuehner | Directed by Benjamin Louis

Stoker Hills gets down to business early, starting with a lecture on film by Professor Smith. That gets the film’s celebrity cameo out of the way in the film’s first five minutes. It also uses those scenes to introduce the three of his students who will be the film’s leads, aspiring filmmakers Ryan, Jake (Vince Hill-Bedford; American Fighter) and Erica.

While shooting their class project, a zombie hooker film entitled Streetwalkers, which was also Stoker Hills’ original title, a car drives by and stops just long enough to drag Erica in before racing off with Ryan and Jake in pursuit with their camera still running.

They don’t return but the camera is found and two of the town’s cops...

Ryan Kiera Armstrong in Firestarter (2022)
First Trailer for New 'Firestarter' Remake with Ryan Kiera Armstrong
Ryan Kiera Armstrong in Firestarter (2022)
"She just has to shove it down and keep it hidden."' Universal has unveiled the first full-length trailer for a Blumhouse remake of the iconic horror film Firestarter, adapted (again) from the Stephen King novel of the same name. This is set to debut in May, both in theaters and streaming on Peacock. In a new adaptation of King's classic thriller from the producers of The Invisible Man, a girl with extraordinary pyrokinetic powers fights to protect her family and herself from sinister forces that seek to capture and control her. This looks exactly like the modern, gritty update you'd expect - right down to the cliche lines about how she's a "real superhero", even tossing in "liar, liar, pants on fire." Zac Efron stars with Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Sydney Lemmon, Michael Greyeyes, Kurtwood Smith, John Beasley, plus Gloria Reuben. The Firestarter score is composed by the legendary...
