Trivia

Toni Basil

Edit
  • Was head cheerleader at Las Vegas High School and wears her actual varsity uniform from those days in the "Mickey" video.
  • Was a member of the very first locking group, The Lockers, in the early 1970s. Fred Berry--"Rerun" of What's Happening!! (1976)--was also a member.
  • Her video for the single "Mickey" was the first to incorporate synchronized dancing. The opening stunt, where a cheerleader jumps through the center of a human pyramid, is now illegal in competition.
  • Had a hit single in the early '80s with "Mickey".
  • She choreographed the music video for "Beast of Burden" with Bette Midler and Mick Jagger.
  • 'Weird Al' Yankovic spoofed her song "Mickey" as "Ricky" (about I Love Lucy (1951)).
  • "Breakaway" was a well known tune played on the Northern Soul scene in the UK, and has become very collectable on the original label. It is still being spun on the decks by Northern Soul DJs to this day.
  • Choreographed and danced with Davy Jones in the "Daddy's Song" sequence of the Monkees movie "Head".
  • Friend of Teri Garr.
  • Graduated Las Vegas High School, Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • She has appeared in two films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: Easy Rider (1969) & Cinq pièces faciles (1970).
