After graduating from Williamsburg High School in Williamsburg, Ohio in 1969, Barry enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed at a base in South Korea. Three years later, he returned and enrolled at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio on the GI Bill. He graduated in 1976.

Is a spokesperson for the Wildlife Land Trust.
