Netflix Goes All-In on 'Bet' With Huge Season 2 Update
Image
A little over a month after its Season 1 debut, Netflix has officially renewed the psychological thriller Betfor a second season. Premiering on May 15, the show is loosely inspired by the massively popular Japanese manga series, Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler, which was created by Homura Kawamoto and Tōru Naomura way back in 2014, and got an anime adaptation in 2017. Starring Miku Martineau as Yumeko, the English-language Canadian offering has divided fans and critics, but its strong performance on Netflix warranted the streamer giving it a renewal.

Per Variety, Betperformed well for Netflix around the globe with a strong showing on the international viewing charts, which is the main reason they're more than willing to continue the series. Developed by Simon Barry (Warrior Nun), in addition to Martineau – who played the younger version of Michelle Yeoh's character in Star Trek: Section 31, Bet features an ensemble cast composed of relative newcomers, including Ayo Solanke,...

Let the games continue! Bet renewed for season 2 at Netflix
Image
If you enjoyed the first season of the new live-action series Bet, you'll be glad to know that Netflix has just given the show the green light for a second installment. That's right! Bet season 2 is officially happening at Netflix, meaning fans can expect more high-stakes gambling as the drama at St. Dominic's Prep heats up.

Bet's season 2 renewal comes a little over a month after the first season's release. We'd say this is a pretty early renewal by Netflix standards, given that the streaming giant usually takes a few months to evaluate a new show's performance before making a decision.

However, we shouldn't be that surprised since the teen thriller performed well on the streamer overall. According to Deadline, the first season ranked among the top 10 most-watched English-language shows worldwide on Netflix for three weeks in a row. In other words, the show was very popular and had...

Netflix announced today, June 24, 2025, that Bet has been renewed for a second season. In a statement, showrunner Simon Barry said: "I'm extremely happy for our amazing Bet fans from all over the world, who get to enjoy another season, and for this incredible cast and crew to return to St.

‘Bet’ Trailer: Netflix Gambles on a Live-Action Manga Adaptation This Spring
Image
For 11 years, Homura Kawamoto’s manga “Kakegurui” has delighted readers with its hammy, enjoyably ridiculous story of an elite private school where student popularity is determined through a cutthroat underground gambling circuit. Combining intensely serious gambling battles with a strong dose of lesbian homoeroticism, “Kakegurui” (which translates to “Compulsive Gambler” in English) has spawned an entire franchise since its first publication in 2014, including two seasons of an anime series produced by Studio Mappa, a live-action Japanese series, two spin-off manga, and two live-action films.

Now, Netflix — which licensed the anime series for international distribution — is taking the gamble of seeing whether this weird, campy property can make the same successful adaptational leap that manga like “One Piece” have in the past, rather than flop on its face like some other attempts to translate anime to new mediums (see “Cowboy Bebop”). The streamer has today announced that an English live-action adaptation of “Kakegurui,...

Netflix has a mixed track record for its live-action anime and manga adaptations. However, the streamer has seen recent success thanks to adaptations of One Piece and Avatar. Next on the list is the adaptation of Kakegurui, with Warrior Nun creator Simon Barry at the helm. Coming to Netflix in 2025, here’s everything we know so far about the series.

The series is from Warrior Nun creator Simon Barry. While Warrior Nun was canceled at Netflix and revived later with a different team, Barry has moved on to BET, the American live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga Kakegurui by author Homura Kawamoto. Jeff F. King, David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, Jon Rutherford, and Nick Nantell are joining him as producers. Barry is also directing.

Why Netflix Canceled Warrior Nun
Image
In the case of a troubled TV show, few things are more powerful than a passionate (read: loud) fan base. Fandom fervor can often be the one thing standing between a series and outright cancellation, even if a renewal isn't immediate.

So it was for "Warrior Nun," a Netflix Original based on the American manga "Warrior Nun Areala." The series follows Ava (Alba Baptista), a young girl who's accidentally resurrected by an ancient Catholic relic and later joins a secret order of... well, warrior nuns. It was something of a cult hit, attracting fans who were hungry for queer representation and general female badassery on screen. Their love for "Warrior Nun" kept the series alive: the fans campaigned hard for another season of the series, and Netflix eventually obliged. Unfortunately, that same strategy wouldn't work for season 2.

"Warrior Nun" returned in November 2022, but its second season failed to meet Netflix's shrewd viewership standards.

10 Time Travel Movies & TV Shows With Surprisingly No Plot Holes

Time travel is frequently utilized in film and TV in a variety of interesting ways. It can be used as a narrative plot device, serve to deepen character development, or even disturb the status quo in a later bid for a series shakeup. Shows and films such as Lost, X-Files, The Twilight Zone, and many others have employed time travel to varying degrees of success to deepen side characters, explore narratives from a new viewpoint, or simply throw in a twist or two.

Warrior Nun's Return Faces Possible Setback After Production Company Financial Probe
Tristán Ulloa and Alba Baptista in Warrior Nun (2020)
Warrior Nun's return faces a potential setback after a financial probe of the production company working on the series' revival. Following the end of Warrior Nun season 2, the action fantasy series was cancelled by Netflix, leading to a global fan movement to revive the series. While a return was promised in 2023, it was revealed to be a revival movie trilogy produced by Dean English with the involvement of comic creator Ben Dunn. Since then, there has been very little news about its return, including formal, public information about whether the series will be a reboot or a sequel.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the production company and film financier Productivity Media Inc. faced a financial probe that could be a setback for Warrior Nun's comeback. CEO William Santor was suspended after reports of financial mismanagement within the company. Some producers on the company's independent films have reportedly not been paid in full,...

Upcoming Netflix Anime Adaptation Has A Massive Live-Action Challenge That Wont Be Easy To Solve
Image
BET faces challenges in replicating Kakegurui's unique visual style in a live-action adaptation. Previous Kakegurui adaptations include a Japanese live-action series and two movies. Netflix's BET must find ways to make the gambling sequences engaging and exciting in live-action.

BET, Netflixs next English-language live-action manga adaptation after One Piece, has a major challenge ahead of it when it comes to replicating the best thing about Kakegurui. Hollywood live-action anime adaptations have improved recently, namely with One Piece. The Netflix live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Odas manga avoided several issues that could be found in virtually every other Hollywood remake of beloved anime and raised the bar for similar projects. Per THR, Warrior Nun showrunner Simon Barry is behind BET, which will star Miku Martineau as Yumeko.

BET will not be the first live-action adaptation of Kakegurui. The hit manga and anime series was turned into a two-season live-action Japanese series,...

Why Im Worried About Netflixs Next Live-Action Anime Adaptation (Despite One Pieces Success)
Image
Kakegurui has had 3 live-action adaptations already. Netflix's Kakegurui-inspired BET may be a major departure from the manga, at least in terms of setting. It's too soon to predict if Netflix's English-language adaptation of Kakegurui will work.

While One Piece was great, I am worried about Netflixs next American live-action anime adaptation BET, based on Kakegurui. Warrior Nun creator Simon Barry is helming a live-action adaptation of Kakegurui for Netflix (via THR), with production having already started in Toronto. BET will join the long list of live-action anime adaptations made by Hollywood, some of which worked much better than others. The series, whose cast will be led by Miku Martineau as Yumeko, will have 10 episodes and is described as an English-language adaptation of the Kakegurui manga by Homura Kawamoto and Tru Naomura.

One Piece season 1 was a game-changing release for Netflix when it comes to live-action anime series. Not...

Netflix Announces ‘BET,’ Live-Action Series Based on Popular Manga and Anime ‘Kakegurui’
Image
Gambling School, also known as Kakegurui is a manga series written by Homura Kawamoto and drawn by Tōru Naomura. The story takes place in a prestigious academy attended by wealthy students who have adopted their own hierarchy based on their gambling skills. The manga has been published since March 2014, and there is also an anime adaptation that currently has two seasons (24 episodes), as well as a prequel manga. Kakegurui is one of the more popular series outside the mainstream works, and it seems that the popularity of the series inspired Netflix to produce a live-action series based on the Kakegurui manga and anime. The series will be titled BET and it has been officially announced recently!

To make it clear, BET won’t be a direct live-action adaptation of Kakegurui, so it is not like Cowboy Bebop or One Piece; instead, it will be a standalone live-action series that is...

Kakagurui Receives English Live-Action Series from Netflix: Meet the Cast - Main Image

While there’s no word yet on the characters they’ll portray, this is a promising announcement as it should mean the show’s production continues to ramp up.

Meet the Cast of Netflix’s Live-Action Kakegurui Adaptation

Kakegurui is a significant show for Netflix as it was one of the streaming platform’s biggest anime hits. After all, the first season was released in 2018, when Netflix didn’t have a big anime library yet.

Since the first season’s release, the anime got renewed for another season, and it got a prequel spinoff that follows Mary Saotome.

Pierce Brosnan returns to espionage for A Spy’s Guide to Survival
Image
With all the questions surrounding the next James Bond, Pierce Brosnan has given all of the two cents that he could. He’s dusted off inquiries and given his advice to the possible next actor, straight from his own experience of filling in the tux of the famous Ian Fleming 007 agent. While rumors still run rampant about Aaron Taylor-Johnson being courted for the role, no announcement has been made. However, Brosnan did give his approval of him for the role, saying, “I think the man has the chops and the talent and the charisma to play Bond, very much so.”

Brosnan himself is set to pick up a new dossier outlining his next mission. According to Deadline, the former MI6 agent has signed on to be in the new romantic thriller A Spy’s Guide to Survival, which comes from Uri Singer’s Passage Pictures. A Spy’s Guide to...

Warrior Nun Season 2's Original End-Credits Scene Would Have Been A Better Ending For The Show
Image
Beatrice's final scene in Warrior Nun season 2 would have been a better conclusion to her character and the show, with more satisfying goodbyes involving the other characters. The original scene, which was cut due to time constraints, would have seen more characters saying goodbye to Beatrice. The upcoming Warrior Nun movies may or may not provide closure for fans, as it remains unclear how they will tie into the show and if they will involve the original cast.

Beatrice’s final scene in Warrior Nun season 2 was almost very different, and it would have been a better conclusion to both the character’s story and the show. Warrior Nun joined the list of fantasy shows canceled too soon, leaving viewers to wonder what happened to Ava in the other world and when she was going to reunite with Beatrice. Fan campaigns for Warrior Nun season 3 continue, but as of now,...

The Warrior Nun Movies Should Ignore Season 3's Risky Villain Plan
Image
The Warrior Nun movie should avoid turning Ava into a villain, as it would not allow for enough character development in a shorter film format. Replicating the villain twist from Warrior Nun season 3 would be a risky move for the movie, as it has already been done in other popular shows. Keeping Ava's character moving forward instead of backsliding into a villain role would be a better choice for the movie adaptation.

While the Warrior Nun movie would really benefit from trying to replicate much of what the Warrior Nun television series did, there is one idea from the show's unmade season 3 that the movie should definitely not use. Warrior Nun is a TV series made by Netflix and based on the comic book character Warrior Nun Areala, written by Ben Dunn. The series follows 19-year-old Ava Silva who wakes up in a morgue and discovers that, not only does...

Warrior Nun Season 3's Ava & Beatrice Plans Make The Show's Cancellation Even Worse
Image
The cancellation of Warrior Nun is even more disappointing considering the potential storylines for Ava and Beatrice in Season 3. The absence of many creatives involved in the show suggests that the movie trilogy may diverge significantly from the original series. While the movies may not provide a complete resolution for Ava and Beatrice's storyline, there is still hope that their importance in the holy war will be acknowledged and they will have a happy ending outside of the Order of the Cruciform Sword.

Ava and Beatrice’s relationship was at the front and center of Warrior Nun seasons 1 and 2, and the reveals about where season 3 would have taken them make the fantasy drama’s cancellation sting even more. The campaign spearheaded by the show’s fanbase to bring back Warrior Nun right after its cancellation in December 2022 proved eventually fruitful after executive producer Dean English confirmed Warrior Nun’s return...

6 Biggest Things That Would Have Happened In Warrior Nun Season 3
Image
Warrior Nun season 3 would have seen Ava Silva become sort of a villain, flipping her previous character arc. Reya, the powerful entity from another world, would have manipulated Ava and turned her into a weapon in season 3. Beatrice, who left the Ocs in season 2, would have gone missing in season 3, possibly allowing for a deeper exploration of her character outside of her life as a Warrior Sister.

Warrior Nun showrunner Simon Barry has discussed a few of the ideas the show would have explored in season 3, which, as of now, does not seem like it will happen. While a trilogy of Warrior Nun movies was announced, the project appears to be disconnected from what Warrior Nun season 3 would have been, as the show's creator will not be involved with it. What the future of the Warrior Nun franchise will be remains to be seen, but Barry already knew where the...
