Being a Top Gun fan, or a lover of fighter pilot movies, is as frustrating as it is rewarding. As good as these kinds of movies are, they rarely get made. Top Gun: Maverick grossed a whopping $1.496 billion and earned praise from everyone who watched it, yet there is still no news of when a sequel will arrive. Before that, fans had to wait for over 30 years before that particular movie premiered. Cruise and Paramount Pictures focused on everything else but planes and aerial dogfights.

The ‘other’ Hollywood studio version of the Alamo story is quite good, with strong production values, exciting stunt battle action and something Republic Pictures didn’t manage very often, a solid screenplay. Sterling Hayden is Jim Bowie, this version’s central hero, with great backup from Anna Maria Alberghetti, Ernest Borgnine, J. Carrol Naish, and Ben Cooper. But best of all is that old hay-shaker Arthur Hunnicutt, as the movies’ best and most natural Davy Crockett.

For moviegoers growing up in the last 20-30 years, big is the new normal. I’m talking about those big-budget, over-produced, effects/action-packed extravaganzas that are as expected and routine an arrival as a commuter bus, and never more so than during the summer months.
