- A native of Lewistown, Pennsylvania, he enlisted the Marine Corps in 1959 and served in Vietnam in the early 1960s.
- After his discharge from the Marine Corps, he returned to his hometown of Lewistown, Pennsylvania and joined their Police Department. In 1968, he visited Los Angeles and made the decision to relocate there and join the LAPD. He worked his way up to homicide detective before leaving to become a full-time writer.
