Adaptations of Doctor Who stories from novels and comics add depth to the show's expanded universe. The show's off-screen adventures offer unique and ambitious storylines that couldn't be adapted for TV. Doctor Who's non-tv adventures, such as comic strips and audio dramas, provide rich and emotionally rewarding experiences.
The best Doctor Who stories aren't restricted to TV screens, as demonstrated by a raft of classic untelevised adventures from novels, comic books and audio plays. When Russell T Davies brought back Doctor Who in 2005, he adapted several of these stories for the screen. For example, the Christopher Eccleston episode "Dalek" was adapted from Robert Shearman's excellent Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) audio, "Jubilee". More recently, Russell T Davies adapted Pat Mills and John Wagner's classic comic strip "The Star Beast" for Doctor Who's 60th anniversary specials.

Warning: Spoilers for Doctor Who #590A new Doctor Who tie-in comic strip sees the destruction of the Sonic Screwdriver, potentially leading to a revamped version of the iconic device coming this year. The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine offers the official first story for the new Fourteenth Doctor, something that's been considered unprecedented as it marks the first time that a new Doctor's full story debut has been in a comic strip. The story in question picks up right where "The Power of the Daleks" leaves off. It is also worth noting that the comic was overseen by returning Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies himself.
"Liberation of the Daleks, part 7" by Alan Barnes and Lee Sullivan puts The Doctor in an altercation with the Supreme Dalek, one that ends with the latter knocking the former's Sonic Screwdriver out of his hand. The Doctor tries to argue that his device is useless to them,...

David Tennant's Fourteenth Doctor has already faced the Daleks, likely ruling them out of a substantial appearance in Doctor Who's 60th-anniversary specials. Russell T Davies' three special episodes will reunite the Doctor with Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) as they take on Beep the Meep, the Wrarth Warriors, and if rumors are to be believed, Neil Patrick Harris' Toymaker. There's been no sign of the Daleks out on location for the specials, nor has there been any hint of them in the brief teaser trailer released on Christmas Day.
This doesn't mean that the Daleks won't appear in some form during 2023's anniversary specials, but it significantly lessens their chances of being the main threat. This might come as a welcome change for those Doctor Who fans who felt that the Daleks were overused during Jodie Whittaker's era. For the fans that do want to see the Fourteenth...

Tom Kingsley, the director of Doctor Who's second 60th anniversary special has provided a tease for his episode that supports a theory as to the identity of who Neil Patrick Harris is playing. Later in 2023, three feature-length episodes of Doctor Who will celebrate the show's 60th anniversary by pitting David Tennant's Fourteenth Doctor against Neil Patrick Harris' enigmatic antagonist, and fan-favorite comics monster Beep the Meep. The first special is directed by Rachel Talalay, who directed some of Peter Capaldi's most acclaimed episodes, with Tom Kingsley and Chanya Button on directing duties for the second and third entries, respectively.
The three directors were interviewed in Doctor Who Magazine #589, where they gave a great deal of insight into how they approached these hotly-anticipated special episodes. Director Tom Kingsley described receiving and almost rejecting Russell T Davies' script for the second special, because he was unsure how he could...

Doctor Who's Centenary Special, "The Power of the Doctor," brought back David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor - and his adventures are continuing in the most delightful way thanks to Doctor Who Magazine. Doctor Who is the world's longest-running science-fiction TV series, and its fandom is one of the most devoted. Doctor Who Magazine's comic strip has been released since 1979, usually featuring the Doctor of the day but often accompanied by original companions.
Doctor Who Magazine hasn't always tied in to the TV series particularly well, but Russell T. Davies dreamed of changing that when he relaunched the show in 2005. He originally planned the Doctor Who comic strip to show the Eighth Doctor's regeneration, telling the story of how Paul McGann turned into Christopher Eccleston. "For so many years the strip had been ignored, or relegated by the fans to second- or third- or fourth-best after the novels, the audio dramas,...
