As Benjamin Franklin famously wrote, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
The horror genre offers a controlled environment in which viewers can reflect on their own morality, whether it be via catharsis or escapism, but a personal loss can complicate one’s relationship with horror. Even the most hardened of fans may struggle to find comfort in the genre after experiencing the death of a loved one.
45 years ago today, Phantasm helped viewers confront death head-on while subtly exploring the grief that accompanies it. In the film, 13-year-old Mike (A. Michael Baldwin) convinces his older brother-turned-guardian Jody (Bill Thornbury) and their affable neighborhood ice cream man, Reggie (Reggie Bannister), to investigate a mysterious mortician dubbed The Tall Man (Angus Scrimm).

Key takeaways: Some horror movies use trippy and surreal elements to create a unique and terrifying experience. The incorporation of hallucinatory imagery and surreal elements can heighten the scares in a horror movie. These movies often play with time, space, and the medium of film itself to disorient and frighten viewers.
While the horror genre can be pretty straightforward in its scares, some of the genre’s weirder efforts use their trippy, surreal tone to terrify film fans. Horror movies are usually creepy, but they aren’t always strange. Some uninspired slashers and supernatural horror movies rely on the same familiar jump scares, gruesome gore, and predictable tropes to unsettle audiences. However, plenty of horror movies delve into weirder, more offbeat territory in their attempts to scare viewers. Some horror movies feel more like a bad acid trip than a standard issue scary story, and this makes them all the more effective.

The Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead episode of The Black Sheep was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Brandon Nally, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
It’s a rare thing to see a horror series with near complete creative control from one person. Currently, Damien Leone seems to be in the drivers seat for the Terrifier series that we are certain to get more entries in and I’ve talked about the Chucky/Child’s Play series that Don Mancini is the driving force for. There’s also another Don that’s in charge of another important horror series. Don Coscarelli gave us one of the most original and successful independent films of all time with 1979’s Phantasm. He wrote, directed, shot, and edited that first movie with his dad helping produce it and his mom doing costumes, production design,...

Many of us have people in our lives who just aren’t as into horror as we are. Come October, it is tempting to simply hide away, shunning them for a month as we indulge in our favorite genre, as we no doubt will do at least some of the time. But then, they may be open to getting into the Halloween spirit at least a little bit.
For that, there are a number of terrific movies that take place on and around the holiday that are not out of the question for the squeamish. Some fit comfortably into the horror genre and some are far from it, but all beautifully capture the essence of the season.
So, here are a few of our favorite family Halloween movies to get you and the scaredy cat in your life into the Halloween mood for spooky season…

Jeremy Sumrall writes and directs this slasher flick that will see release through Wild Eye Releasing. Set in the 1980’s, a trend in horror (and other genres) that I enjoy, regardless of how overdone it’s perhaps becoming, this is a ritualistic serial-killery (is that a word?) and sexually frantic film about a resurrected murderer named Alex Black.
There is, indeed, a lot of sex here. I mean, it’s part and parcel of the slasher sub-genre, right? Teenagers doing the horizontal mambo while a maniac is on the loose? It happens a lot here, perhaps to the point of annoyance, and perhaps even to the point where most slasher fans might even say…...

Flay
Stars: Elle Lamont, Violett Beane, A. Michael Baldwin, Kaylee King, Johnny Walter, Aaron Spivey-Sorrells, Dalton E. Gray, Emily Grace Dunn, Sarah Joy Byington, Noé de la Garza , Peggy Schott, Mike Dell | Written by Matthew Daley | Directed by Eric Pham
Name: Flay
Age: 2019
Appearance: CGI-laden ghostly horror, featuring a Slenderman entity, a haunted painting, a cursed chain, teenage angst drama and a cameo from A. Michael Baldwin, aka “Mike” out of Phantasm.
Not another Slenderman film?
With his faceless stare and fine suit, it looks like Slenderman but it’s actually the ghost of a murdered American Indian who went by the name of Flay.
So, why does he wear a suit and tie?
The film opens with a prologue set in the 1800s showing Flay refusing to wear western clothing and is tortured to death by having his face skinned whilst being chained.
Hence the cursed chains!
Yes!
And the faceless man!

An independent production company that successfully sued Sony over their attempts to stop their movie from being released has not only won the case but set a release date for the title.
Flay, originally due for release in 2017, tells of a young woman who goes up against a malevolent faceless spirit. Sony claimed Phame Factory’s film was a rip-off of the Slender Man legend, which the studio believed they had exclusive rights to. As a result of the messy legal tangle, writer and producer Eric Pham opted not to release the film until he met the studio in court.

Exclusive: Flay, the feature film that Sony claimed was a rip off of its own Slender Man, is set to finally be released after independent production company Phame Factory and the Hollywood studio resolved their differences.
Last year, Sony served the indie with a cease-and-desist order to stop the release of Flay as it claimed that it was a rip-off of the Slender Man character, which it had the exclusive rights to.
However, Phame Factory filed a lawsuit in July seeking a judgement that its promotion and distribution of Flay didn’t infringe Sony’s copyrights. It has now won the right to release the film and has reached an agreement with Sony, albeit with a disclaimer on advertising materials, trailers and the movie itself.

Phantasm is easily one of the best horror movies in the genre. With it's tightly constructed plot, the film often moves from accessible to opaque with careless abandon. However there is enough there to really create a film that is inimitable. It's why we still discuss/debate it today. It's also why yours truly recently turned in a podcast to this site in which I broke down the film on a minute by spine tingling minute basis.
As excellent as Phantasm is, like any franchise, it certainly doesn't hit a home run every time out of the park. That said the "Phans" of this film are a rabid lot. I consider myself a part of this group. So no matter how much I might get frustrated by any one film in this franchise, I am always going to come back for more when it is offered.
For this article my ranking system was fairly basic.

When Kenny & Company came out in 1976, it barely registered at the box office. However, it would soon usher in a host of other "kids" films, namely E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Stand By Me (1986) and all of the John Hughes movies from that era as well. These films had bigger budgets, studio muscle behind them, and they were able to stick around long enough to find their audience. Kenny & Company didn't have this luxury. And, while it did have a nice DVD release via Anchor Bay (remember them?) in 2005, the film has essentially been forgotten.
I first watched Don Coscarelli's Kenny & Company on a Sunday evening. I don't recall what grade I was in or how old I was, but something about this tale of 3 friends (Kenny (Dan McCann), Doug (A. Michael Baldwin) and Sherman (Jeff Roth)) hanging out around Halloween stayed with me. It would be many years later but...

We round up the latest horror-tinged Blu-ray and DVD releases....
So, after a brief hiatus, it turns out a lot’s happened in the few months between these round ups. A snap general election has been called, terror has struck at the heart of Manchester and a scandal approaching Watergate levels has hit the U.S presidency. More importantly, Troll 2 has finally come to UK Netflix and is the cherry on the cake made entirely of a series of kind of wonderful, kind of… not films on DVD and Bluray.
So, 1990’s Troll 2, you may or may not be aware of, is generally regarded as one of the very greatest 'so bad it’s good' movies. There are many worse (The Rollerblade Seven or Gary Oldman little person rom-com Tiptoes come to mind), though it’s difficult to think of many other truly awful movies...

In 1979, Don Coscarelli was 23 years old when he made a haunting, off-beat tale of two brothers facing off against an inter-dimensional threat known as The Tall Man, who Angus Scrimm (Coscarelli’s best friend) played with psychopathic intensity. “Phantasm” became a cult phenomenon, spawning four sequels; the purported finale, “Phantasm: Ravager” (Well Go USA), opens this week. But Scrimm’s no longer around to help promote it, and Coscarelli’s left on his own to contemplate a rocky career.
Whether or not it’s truly the last, “Ravager” does mark Scrimm’s final performance. The actor died in January at the age of 89, not long after production wrapped. When “Phantasm: Ravager” premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, alongside a new 4k restoration of the original film (aided by Jj Abrams’ production studio, Bad Robot), the screenings had the air of a wake.

Phantasm: Ravager is a cult sequel to a cult franchise made for a specific cult of fans. If you’ve never been sucked into Don Coscarelli’s do-it-yourself supernatural series, David Hartman’s fifth (and most likely final) tale of Tall-Man-terror will disappoint and frustrate. Obvious budgetary restrictions whittle down most scenes to “goofy” effects and minimal locations work, but this is everything true fans will be expecting. Hartman’s fivequel is a sentimental, fulfilling finale meant for fans who love watching airborne metallic orbs eviscerate victims, like a Coscarelli-approved bearhug that comforts through carnage.
Haters, stay away – this isn’t your movie.
Phantasm‘s latest chapter begins with Reggie (Reggie Bannister) appearing in the desert, four-barrel shotgun and all. He recalls the tragedies of his past, and reminds viewers that the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) can pretty much do whatever the hell he wants. This is the only fitting setup,...

While there may be a serious lack of theatrical horror coming our way this Halloween season, fear not genre fans, as we have over 15 different horror and sci-fi titles making their way onto smaller screens this October, which should help take the sting off a bit. Several great films I happened to catch earlier on this year at various festivals – The Greasy Strangler, In A Valley of Violence and Under the Shadow – are all making their VOD debuts this month, and you also have the remastered version of Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm and the series final sequel, Phantasm: Ravager, to look forward to as well.
Other notable VOD releases for October 2016 include The Windmill, The Unspoken, ClownTown, Fear, Inc., Vampyres, Halloweed, and Goddess of Love from Jon Knautz (The Shrine, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer).

Late Nite Grindhouse is proud to be bringing Phantasm in it’s newly remastered form, which they are dubbing as Phantasm: Remastered, to the Moolah Theatre & Lounge in St. Louis, Missouri. If you haven’t heard about this, J.J. Abrams and his company Bad Robot stepped in and performed a remaster/restoration on the film, which was in dire need considering Coscarelli’s own print wasn’t in the best of shape.
The residents of a small town have begun dying under strange circumstances, leading young Mike (Michael Baldwin) to investigate. After discovering that the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm), the town’s mortician, is killing and reanimating the dead as misshapen zombies, Mike seeks help from his older brother, Jody (Bill Thornbury), and local ice cream man Reggie (Reggie Bannister). Working together, they try to lure out and kill the Tall Man, all the while avoiding his minions and a deadly silver sphere.

From the tender ages of 23 - 25, Don Coscarelli worked on a movie involving a tall, macabre undertaker who caused a lot of undead, little-person shenanigans in the fictional Morningside Cemetery and the small town around it. Coscarelli didn't know it then, but what he created was The formative surrealist nightmare work that would go on to influence a generation of filmmakers and fascinate fans of strange cinema for decades to come. We now know that film as Phantasm. In the movie, Michael (A. Michael Baldwin) follows his brother Jody (Bill Thornbury) around like a stray puppy. Seeing as he's an orphan, I'm not surprised, and it's as endearing as it is annoying. Michael catches the local undertaker loading up the coffin into a hearse all by himself, which is weird...

Back in 1979, an up-and-coming filmmaker by the name of Don Coscarelli unleashed Phantasm, his terrifying and surreal exploration of fear, onto unsuspecting horror fans. Now, over 37 years later, we are about to celebrate the release of Phantasm: Ravager, the final installment of the iconic franchise that recently enjoyed its world premiere at the 2016 Fantastic Fest. It’s a project that Phantasm fans have been waiting to see for a long time, and I have to say that by and large, longtime Phanatics should be absolutely pleased with how Ravager has turned out.
Co-writer/director David Hartman’s genuine passion for this franchise is engrained in every single moment of this sequel, which perfectly embodies the scrappy “can-do” attitude that has gotten the Phantasm series this far. The film is also a beautiful tribute to the legacy of the franchise’s villain, The Tall Man, portrayed by Angus Scrimm, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

"If this one doesn't scare you, you're already dead." Horror fans already know this one well. Back in 1979, director Don Coscarelli introduced The Tall Man and his deadly silver Sentinel Spheres to the world in a sci-fi horror film called Phantasm. The film built up a cult following over the years and, believe it or not, they're just about to release the fourth sequel titled Phantasm: Ravager (see the trailer for that here). In addition to the release of that new film, Coscarelli's original film that started it all is getting a re-release as Phantasm: Remastered. This brand new 4K rereleae also features remastered 5.1 surround sound, all overseen by J.J. Abrams and the folks at Bad Robot. The film stars A. Michael Baldwin, Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister and Bill Thornbury. If you've never seen this film, it's worth checking out. Seriously. Here's the new high def trailer for Don Coscarelli's Phantasm: Remastered,...

Former ice cream man Reggie has played a good game against The Tall Man, but that game is not quite over. There is one more round to be fought in the fifth film in Don Coscarelli's frightening franchise, and that final showdown is teased in the official trailer for Phantasm: Ravager that was recently unveiled by EW.
Phantasm: Ravager will be released On Demand and on Digital HD this October 4th, followed by a theatrical release on October 7th from Well Go USA Entertainment. A special behind-the-scenes sneak peek of the film will be revealed at Art House Theater Day screenings of Phantasm: Remastered on September 24th.
The fifth and final film in Coscarelli's frightening franchise was directed by David Hartman, who co-wrote the script with Coscarelli.
