Her daughter, with Laurens Van der Post, writer Cari Mostert, was conceived when Baker was on a sea voyage from South Africa to the UK to study ballet. Baker was 14 years old at the time. Mostert was raised by Baker's mother and long believed Baker was her sister.

Trained as ballerina from age 6. At age 17 was rejected by Sadlers Wells as too tall & returned to South Africa to train as an actress.
