The Hit Apple TV+ Series That Stephen King Called 'Deliriously Nasty'
Image
This article contains a discussion of suicide.

Put that Rolex back where it came from. Spoilers for season 1 of "Friends and Neighbors" lie ahead!

Legendary horror writer Stephen King has many delightful qualities as a public figure, but perhaps his best is that he genuinely enjoys pop culture and consumes it just like the rest of us. On the social media platform Bluesky, King weighed in on a recent Apple TV+ series with a pretty positive verdict: "Deliriously nasty. It's like a John D. MacDonald novel from 1962 with a lot more sex and no good guy. Enjoyable."

The series in question is "Your Friends and Neighbors," which premiered on the streamer in April 2025 and stars "Mad Men" veteran Jon Hamm as Andrew Cooper, a finance guy usually called "Coop" who, in the first episode, gets fired over a fling with a subordinate employee and doesn't know how to keep his expensive life afloat.

‘Your Friends & Neighbors’: Everything That Led to Andrew Cooper’s Firing from His Hedge Fund Manager Job
Image
Andrew Cooper’s world implodes right in the first episode of Apple TV+’s newly released show Your Friends and Neighbors. One minute he is basking in the glory of his high-paying job, the next he is being fired, when he is soaking in a hot tub with his boss! Why?

It is due to his inappropriate s*xual relationship with a junior employee, thereby violating the strict company policy of zero tolerance towards manager/subordinate fraternizing in that sense.

Jon Hamm in Your friends and Neighbors(Credit:Apple TV+)

On the face of it, he seems calm and takes the blow without much protest, it is clear that his carefully curated life, for which he worked hard for years, is slipping away from his hands.

Though he argues with his boss, Jack Bailey, that the aforementioned fling with a junior employee, Olivia Cross, was consensual, the direct breach of the...

Your Friends and Neighbors season 1 episode 1 recap: This is what happens
Image
This post contains spoilers from Your Friends and Neighbors from this point forward.

When you press play on Your Friends and Neighbors, you're probably not expecting to be greeted by a murder scene in the very first few seconds. But that's exactly what happens as Andrew "Coop" Cooper (Jon Hamm) wakes up in a pool of someone else's blood on the foyer of a mansion. There's a lifeless body beside him and he quickly attempts to clean up a bit to no avail before darting out of the house. Outdoor lights flick on, scaring him right into the pool where he reflects on what got him here.

Following the opening sequence that's reminiscent of The Mindy Project's pilot episode, we're brought back to four months earlier, long before that bloody death ever occurred. Nothing in Coop's life is going well. He lost his job after his boss Jack Bailey...

‘Your Friends and Neighbors’ Review: Jon Hamm Pilfers from the Privileged in a Ho-Hum Sad-Dad Drama
Image
“It’s not yours if you can’t keep it.”

In “Your Friends and Neighbors,” this line emerges from Jack Bailey (Corbin Bernsen), a rich old dude who runs a hedge fund and just fired Andrew Cooper (Jon Hamm), a slightly-less-rich, slightly-less-old dude who manages, er, managed a hedge fund. Bailey’s point is basically nothing that belongs to the firm belongs to Andrew, even if Andrew — who goes by “Coop,” because he’s cool and relatable like that — brought in the clients, their investments, and their influence. It’s a shitty thing to say, just like firing Coop is a shitty thing to do, but hey, that’s Jack — and that’s business.

Still, the phrase inevitably springs to mind later, as Coop pivots from taking anyone’s money to make the rich richer and into taking the rich’s money to make himself richer. As he sneaks into his wealthy neighbors’ capacious mansions,...

Your Friends & Neighbors Premiere Review: When the Dream Turns Out to Be a Lie (But the Watch Is Still Real)
Image
Jon Hamm’s Andrew “Coop” Cooper doesn’t fall from grace so much as he’s pushed.

Fired under false pretenses, replaced emotionally by an NBA all-star, and quietly erased from the only world he ever knew — Coop doesn’t fight back. Not at first. He just… absorbs it.

The heartbreak, the humiliation, the financial gut-punch. He’s not angry — he’s stunned. That’s what makes him dangerous.

(Courtesy of Apple TV+)

On the premiere of Apple TV+‘s Your Friends & Neighbors, Coop’s undoing doesn’t feel like karma. It feels like a rigged system finally cashing in on its favored sons, and Coop realizing too late that he was never one of them.

Yes, he slept with a younger employee. One time. Months ago. And yes, she was clearly into him.

Your Friends and Neighbors Episodes 1 & 2 Review: Jon Hamm’s Return to Prestige TV Raises My Expectations, but the Plot Needs Time to Settle
Image
“Welcome to the jungle, it gets worse here every day…”—It feels like Guns N’ Roses unknowingly wrote the perfect anthem for Coop’s chaotic existence. Who is he? The protagonist of Apple TV’s latest drama, Your Friends and Neighbors, and if you think your day has been tough, wait until you walk a mile in his expensive shoes. A former hedge fund manager caught in a downward spiral, his life is spiraling into chaos like a car skidding out of control on an icy road.

Amidst the wreckage of his life, I can’t help but feel there’s something strangely magnetic about his downfall. Created by Jonathan Tropper, this drama series dives face-first into the rotting underbelly of privilege, ego, and broken relationships. Starring Jon Hamm, Olivia Munn, and a supporting cast of characters you’ll love to hate—or hate to love—this isn’t just a midlife crisis.

‘Your Friends And Neighbors’ Episodes 1-2 Recap & Ending Explained: Is Lu Tracking Cooper?
Image
Your Friends and Neighbors opens with Andrew Cooper (known to his friends as Coop), a former hedge fund manager in New York, waking up in a stranger’s house with a dead body lying in a pool of blood right beside him. He immediately starts getting rid of his clothes and all evidence that can prove that he was in that house in the first place. But while exiting through the back door, the automatic lights turn on, which startles an already anxious Coop, and he falls into the pool. As he sinks to the bottom, he starts thinking about how things in his life got so bad, and the episode flashes back in time by four months, where we see Coop meeting a woman named Liv Cross. The two strike up a flirtatious conversation, even though both of them are aware that they work for the same company, albeit...

Your Friends and Neighbors TV Review: Jon Hamm plays the anti-Don Draper in the new Apple TV+ drama series
Image
Plot: After being fired in disgrace, a hedge fund manager still grappling with his recent divorce, resorts to stealing from his neighbors’ homes in the exceedingly affluent Westmont Village, only to discover that the secrets and affairs hidden behind those wealthy facades might be more dangerous than he ever imagined.

Review: Apple knew it had something on its hands when it renewed Your Friends and Neighbors before the first season premiered. When you land a star vehicle led by Jon Hamm and created by the showrunner of Banshee, Warrior, and See, you don’t take any risks. As the trend of stories focused on rich people behaving badly continues to ride on the success of Yellowstone and Succession, Your Friends and Neighbors brings a different angle to the formula. With Jon Hamm portraying an ultra-wealthy guy who has fallen on hard times and resorts to petty larceny from those who live near him,...

Best Procedurals Everyone Forgets About
Image
Television procedurals follow a tried-and-true formula that keeps crime mystery fans coming back for more. Each episode introduces an intense conflict for investigators to solve, or else face dire public safety consequences. The procedural genre has become more crowded in recent years, leaving a select golden few to thrive and others to be forgotten.

Some of the most notable TV procedurals, including Criminal Minds and Law and Order: Svu, unfold their stories in unique and clever ways. They can always keep their audiences guessing. Other thrilling shows, like Life and Murder in the First, try to replicate their successes but are ultimately pushed to the sidelines. Even though these series are typically forgotten by broader audiences, they still offer entertaining adventures.

'The Price Is Right': Bob Barker praises Drew Carey for doing 'the type of thing I did'
Bob Barker thinks successor Drew Carey is doing "a fine job" as host of "The Price Is Right," but he also believes game shows in general aren't what they used to be.

The Emmy-winning daytime-tv legend will be seen again on the weekday CBS program Thursday, Dec. 12 -- the day he turns 90. It's part of a week of episodes celebrating the milestone and also highlighting a mission famously advocated by animal-rights crusader Barker: pet adoption.

The birthday episode was taped recently, and Barker confirms his return to the "Price" set was emotional. However, he also tells Zap2it of the genre, "Some of the shows that they have brought on, and that have disappeared, haven't really been game shows. Though they call them that."

Barker cites such current hosts as Carey, Wayne Brady (CBS' "Let's Make a Deal"), Steve Harvey (the syndicated "Family Feud") and Cedric the Entertainer ("Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,...

Burn Notice Review: The Not Very Good Guys
Sigh. I miss Pearce even more now after watching “Official Business."

That's what happens when her replacement is none other than Agents Bailey and Manaro, who showed up to take advantage of their newest “asset” and mandate that Fiona assist them on a case.

Are Bailey and Manaro from the Cma? The Central Moron Agency? How can these to chuckle nuts be from the same department that brought us Tom Card and Daniel Pearce?!? Honestly, how have they not gotten themselves killed?

Typically, I really enjoy the characters Matt Nix comes up with. For example, this week Durov was creepy and sleazy, while Angela had me completely fooled with her innocent act, followed by the shocking reality of her traitorous real self.

But Bailey and Manaro just bug the crap out of me and I have figured out why: They are recycled characters from another Nix-created program!

Tom Hanks Has Become First Time Grandfather
Tom Hanks has become a grandfather for the first time. The 54-year-old actor's eldest son Colin Hanks, known for his role as Jack Bailey in TV series "The Good Guys", and his wife of nine months Samantha Bryant welcomed their first child, a daughter named Olivia Jane, into the world on Tuesday, February 1.

A source close to the 33-year-old actor told People magazine, "The family is home and everyone's happy and healthy."

Colin, whose mother Susan Lewes, Tom's first wife, died of cancer in 2002, and former publicist Samantha's new arrival could give "Toy Story 3" star Tom the perfect excuse to dig out his most treasured toys, as he recently admitted he still loves playing with his kids' miniature cars and planes.

Tom said, "I play with toys all the time. I play with the little goofy things my kids still have like cars and planes and I hold them...

Fox cancels 'The Good Guys'
The Good Guys (2010)
Fox has reportedly decided to cancel freshman series The Good Guys. The cop comedy-drama stars former West Wing actor Bradley Whitford as old-fashioned detective Dan Stark and Colin Hanks as his straight-laced partner Jack Bailey. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, told the Dallas Observer that a Fox Television Studios executive "was kind enough to call me and let me know as soon as the decision had been handed down." "We liked the show," she explained. "And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren't good." The show's pilot attracted 3.2m (more)...

Matt's Weekend Picks: December 10-12
The Good Guys (Friday, 9/8c, Fox)

Not a great week for quirky crime-fighters. First FX gives the wonderful Terriers the boot, and now we come to the end of the line for Fox's genial but low-rated buddy-cop spoof. We will miss Bradley Whitford as gone-to-seed Dallas detective Don Stack, especially his bushy 'stache. The final episode brings back Gary Cole as Stark's legendary former partner, Frank Savage, and we also meet the ex-partner of Stark's sidekick Jack Bailey (Colin Hanks). Jack's former partner, played by American Pie's Chris Klein, has done well, now the assistant chief of the department, called in when a Mafia informant is murdered and a dirty cop is suspected. Surely not...

New Summer TV Shows: What is Good and what is Not
The summer is now fully here, and with it comes a new batch of summer TV shows –now that networks and cable alike have switched to a varied, year-round schedule that confuses even the professionals in the industry. Among them there are vampires, cops, families trying to fit in and many, many secrets. Of these new summer offerings, almost all of them have already aired –the only exception is Showtime’s The Big C, a show about cancer with Laura Linney that arrives August 16); some have even aired several episodes, so they can barely be called “new”, and some of their plots might have evolved. But I have tried to watch all those series’ pilots to find out what is good, what is bad, what is promising and what might stay or leave soon. Here it is:

(I recently updated this post, but there are still a few shows missing.

The Good Guys (2010)
Colin Hanks on The Good Guys, Mad Men, and Comparing Himself to Dad
The Good Guys (2010)
Ever since Colin Hanks's first major film role in the 2002 teen comedy Orange County, he's been aware of his character niche: a likable, wry, non-threatening everyman. While he's played that type several times and bears a strong resemblance to his two-time Academy Award-winning father, Hanks still displays a balance of comic timing and magnetic sanity he can call his own. Now, on Fox's flashy new cop dramedy The Good Guys, we watch as the 32-year-old actor amps his appeal to an explosive high as Det. Jack Bailey, who must survive duty alongside his Starsky and Hutch caricature of a partner, Dan Stark (Bradley Whitford).

Hanks phoned Movieline last week to discuss what drew him to The Good Guys, his intriguing Mad Men stint, and the reason Turner and Hooch recently made him laugh.

Never trust anyone! That's the first rule of police work. And it's probably an excellent rule for the rest of life, too -- if you want to become a paranoid recluse, that is. ... Still, never trusting anyone is a good rule to follow sometimes. And on 'The Good Guys' (Mon., 9Pm Et on Fox), detective Jack Bailey (Colin Hanks) learns this to his peril.

'The Good Guys' (9Pm, Fox)

Until Tom Selleck returns to primetime next season on CBS' cop drama 'Blue Bloods,' we have to give it up to Bradley Whitford's 'Good Guys' moustache for the Best Supporting Performance by Facial Hair in a Drama Series. Really, look at that thing ... it's truly Selleck-worthy. Meanwhile, there's much to love elsewhere about this quirky new series (which actually falls more in the dramedy category), concocted by 'Burn Notice' creator Matt Nix. Whitford's Dan Stark was once a great cop ... in the '80s, a decade he can't seem to let go of, from the 'stache and his wardrobe to his drinking and his love of his Trans Am. But now he's partnered up with the by-the-book Jack Bailey (Colin Hanks), who embraces modern police techniques and desperately wants a promotion. Jack's more,...

TV Review: New Fox Series ‘The Good Guys’ is Just Mediocre
Chicago – Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford seem like a pair of good guys in real life and the creator of their new show (Matt Nix of “Burn Notice”) has definitely been more-than-good in the past but their new action series, “The Good Guys” might be more correctly titled “The Mediocre Guys,” although that’s not quite as catchy.

Television Rating: 2.5/5.0

On “The Good Guys,” debuting tonight, May 19th, 2010 on Fox, Hanks and Whitford play a pair of Texan cops who are cut from the classic oil-and-water buddy comedy cloth. Hanks plays the buttoned-up Jack Bailey while Whitford plays the unbuttoned Dan Stark. Bailey longs for a more high-profile gig than chasing down stolen humidifiers while Stark barely lives a sober moment, more focused on his mustache grooming than anything else. Jenny Wade plays Assistant District Attorney Liz Traynor while Diana Maria Riva co-stars as Lt. Ana Ruiz.

Bigger Than Dallas: An Advance Review of Fox's The Good Guys
I wanted to like Fox's new action-comedy The Good Guys. I really did. The series, which gets a sneak peak on Fox tonight before its official launch this summer, revolves around anachronistic police officer Dan Stark (The West Wing's Bradley Whitford) who acts as though he's the living embodiment of a 1970s TV cop show and is paired with by-the-book, ambitious younger officer Jack Bailey (Mad Men's Colin Hanks), who resents the fact that his promising career is being held back by this boozy, washed up hack. Created by Matt Nix (Burn Notice), The Good Guys could be fun, escapist fare but the first hour found it trying way too hard to please and the intentional quirkiness of the situation (look for Whitford's Dan to eat moldy cottage cheese and vomit!) often feels laborious and arrives with the subtlety of an anvil being dropped on our heads. Which is...

Jack Bailey
Get the Good, the Bad and the Ugly from the Cast of Fox's 'The Good Guys'
Jack Bailey
Filed under: Features, TV Previews, Summer TV

In the gritty police world of the good, the bad and the ugly, Det. Jack Bailey, played by Colin Hanks, is the good. He's the guy who always tries to do right by doing right, even if he's driving everyone around him right up a tree.

Det. Dan Stark, played by Bradley Whitford, is the bad. The cop who always tries to do right -- even if he has to do a little wrong to get the job done.

So what does that make me in that photo, the ugly?!?

I don't mind. During my visit to the set of 'The Good Guys,' creator Matt Nix's ('Burn Notice') new action comedy, Whitford and Hanks, along with co-stars Jenny Wade and Diana-Maria Riva, were all good enough to make some time to talk about the show. Fox is airing...

The Good Guys Episode Stills: Series Premiere
While the show will air on Fridays this fall (check out Fox's upcoming primetime schedule Now), The Good Guys will get a special series premiere screening this Wednesday prior to American Idol.

The last Fox series to receive such treatment? A little show called Glee.

The Good Guys stars Colin Hanks as Jack Bailey, a Chicago detective whose snarky attitude has landed him with Dan Stark as a partner. This aging cop is portrayed by Bradley Whitford and still lives off his glory days in the 1970s, where he rose to fame by rescuing the governor's son.

Dan also drinks. A lot.

TV Fanatic will cover this show in depth, starting with the pilot episode. For now, get an early look at scenes from it via the following photos:...

Submit Your Questions for 'The Good Guys' Stars Bradley Whitford, Colin Hanks and Creator Matt Nix
Matt Nix
This Monday and Tuesday I'll be in Dallas, Texas to visit the set of The Good Guys, Matt Nix's (Burn Notice) new action comedy series on Fox starring Colin Hanks, Bradley Whitford and Bradley Whitford's mustache.

Whitford plays Dan Stark, a washed-up detective who spends most of his time drunk or re-hashing his glory days. Hanks is Jack Bailey, an ambitious, by-the-book detective, who gets stuck solving annoying petty theft cases that nobody else wants--with Stark as his partner.

I'll also get to chat with Jenny Wade, who plays Assistant D.A. Liz Traynor, and Diana Maria Riva, who has the enviable job of playing Stark and Bailey's boss, Lieutenant Ana Ruiz.

Have questions for creator Matt Nix, Hanks, Whitford or Whitford's mustache (which plays a bring role in the Good Guys promos, as you can see in the video below)? How about for the lovely Ms. Wade and Ms.

Special Preview: Fox New Cop Comedy Code 58
Fox is pulling out all the stops for its new police action comedy Code 58 starring Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks.

The show, from creator Matt Nix (USA’s Burn Notice), is getting a special preview spot before the final episodes of ratings powerhouse American Idol Wed. May 12 and May 19 at 8 Pm, the same time this season’s breakout Glee premiered in 2009.

Code 58 — Dallas police speak for a routine investigation — follows a young, ambitious and by-the-book detective Jack Bailey (Hanks) who’s snarky remarks and habit of undermining himself gets him relegated to the mundane petty crimes department. He is partnered with a boozy, former big-shot detective Dan Stark (Whitford) who spends most of his time rehashing his glory days.

Jack may not see it, but he has little chance of getting out of his situation: his knack for making enemies at the station has assured he is not going anywhere anytime soon.
