Fantaspoa 2020 Postponed, “Fantaspoa at Home” Initiative Announced

The Coronavirus is having a widespread impact on people, governments, businesses, and events around the world, and the Fantaspoa Film Festival announced that it will postpone this year's event, with plans to launch "Fantaspoa at Home" to offer seven feature films every week at www.fantaspoaathome.com starting April 1st:

Porto Alegre, Brazil - 24 March 2019 - It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that the Fantaspoa Film Festival announces that it will postpone its upcoming 16th edition due to the Covid-19 pandemic currently sweeping the world. Initially scheduled for this coming May, the festival directors forecast that this year's edition will now take place between the months of October and December, 2020, if deemed responsible and safe at that time.

Due to executive decisions made by the Brazilian government prior to this unprecedented health crisis, Fantaspoa and countless other organizations dedicated to the arts were stripped of all federal sponsorship money.

'Hopefuls', 'Beatriz' among Festival do Rio's Première Brasil entries
Menino de Engenho (1965)
Top brass at the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival announced that 41 feature and 19 shorts from Brazilian filmmakers will screen in the 17th edition, set to run from October 1-14.

The Première Brasil competition section will screen 13 features, of which ten will receive world premieres. An additional two features and two documentaries will screen out of competition.

Other Brazilian productions such as a restoration of Walter Lima Jr’s 1965 classic Menino de Engenho (Plantation Boy) will screen in special Première Brasil sidebars such as New Trends, Panorama, Expectation and Fronteiras.

Première Brasil is the only competitive section of the festival and Redentors will be presented on closing night. The audience will vote on three awards for best Brazilian feature film, best documentary and best short film.

As part of this years commemoration of the 450 years of the founding of Rio, the festival will screen six films that have the city as its setting or reflect the theme of Rio...

One of world horror's true icons makes a welcome return to screens with word that Coffin Joe (Jose Mojica Marins) is on board as one of the four directors of the upcoming Brazilian splatter anthology The Black Fables (As Fabulas Negras) and will also star. SFX artist and splatter-meister Rodrigo Aragao also directs while supervising the project as a whole with Petter Baiestorf and Joel Caetano rounding out the director roster.Put together on a tiny budget - most of which appears to have been spent on blood and creatures - there's no release date for the film just yet but there is a full, English subtitled trailer for the piece which you can get a look at below.
