The 49-year-old rapper, singer and songwriter showed up to the annual event with his own musical instrument, and while on his way, he dropped a surprise EP titled 7 Piano Sketches.
“I had a piano in my house, and sometimes I would record ideas, or record myself improvising and making up stuff from scratch,” he told GQ of the songs. “A lot of these little moments or songs, they were just fun pieces that I would email to my son, or I would email them to Erykah [Badu], or to my stepdad or other musicians like Q-Tip or Tyler the Creator. If they look in the history of their phones, they’ll find some of these pieces.”

Erykah Badu hasn’t released a new album since 2010’s New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh), but that could all change soon. In a recent Billboard interview, the neo soul pioneer revealed she is working on her first studio album in 15 years.
Adding to the intrigue, it’s being solely produced by The Alchemist, better known for working with hip-hop artists like Freddie Gibbs, Earl Sweatshirt, and Boldy James.
According to journalist Damien Scott, the currently untitled project is a primary focus in Badu’s life. “The album has been taking up most of her time; she says she can’t wait until she’s done,” Scott wrote.
Elsewhere in the interview, Badu explained why it’s been so long between albums. “I tour eight months out of the year for the past 25 years,” she said. “That’s what I do. I am a performance artist. I am not a recording artist.

When “The Piano Lesson’s” hair designer Andrea Mona Bowman was first told she was tasked to create a wig for singer Erykah Badu, she was elated.
She immediately began designing what would be fitting for the Queen of Soul’s cameo as Lucille, the rousing bandleader at a jazz club, in Malcolm Washington’s film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play.
“I was so excited because she’s an icon to me,” Bowman, the head of the hair department, tells Variety. “I just love everything about her style.”
But there was a slight problem.
Due to Badu’s touring schedule, she was available for only one day to shoot.
There would be no time for a prior hair fitting, which meant Bowman had to have several wigs ready in hopes that one would work.

For Malcolm Washington, an appreciation for August Wilson plays runs in the family. Several years ago, his father Denzel committed to producing film adaptations of Wilson’s Century Cycle plays — a collection of 10 works, each covering one decade of the Black experience in 20th-century America. Denzel started with the Oscar-nominated Fences, which he also directed and starred in, and followed that with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which won Chadwick Boseman a posthumous Best Actor Oscar nomination. In 2022, Malcolm’s brother, the actor John David Washington, starred in a Broadway revival of The Piano Lesson.

Get ready to mark your calendars, because one of the most anticipated films of the year, The Piano Lesson, is tuning up for its Netflix debut this November!
Adapted from August Wilson's celebrated play, The Piano Lesson not only brings a powerful story to the screen but also marks the directorial debut of Malcolm Washington. The film will first hit select theaters on November 8, 2024, before making its way to the streaming giant.
Set against the backdrop of 1936 Pittsburgh, The Piano Lesson dives deep into the heart of the Charles family and their most prized possession: an intricately carved piano that echoes their heritage, struggles, and dreams.
The story follows their emotional journey as they wrestle with a life-changing decision -- whether to sell the piano to reclaim their ancestral land or hold onto it as a symbol of their past. As Netflix's official logline teases:
A family clash over an heirloom piano explodes.

Los Angeles, Aug 15 (Ians) Tina Knowles shut down rumours that her daughter Beyonce travels with personal toilet seats while on tour.

Tina explained that the leaked backstage picture of a black container labeled “Beyonce Toilet Seats” was merely a part of the singer’s Renaissance World Tour set.

“Due to lightning in the area, we are currently under a shelter in place order,” the message read. “Fans outside of gates and in the parking lots are asked to return to their cars. All fans inside of the stadium are asked to shelter in place under covered concourse areas and ramps until further notice. Thank you for your patience.”
Approximately 50,000 concertgoers were forced to huddle together under cover as the storm raged overhead...

Beyoncé appeared to drop Lizzo’s name from her “Break My Soul” remix while performing the song at the Boston stop of her “Renaissance World Tour” (get tickets here) on Tuesday night. The lyric change took place just hours after news broke that Lizzo has been sued by her former backup dancers for sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment.
On the third verse of Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul (The Queens Remix)” featuring Madonna, she name-drops Lizzo alongside other queens in the music industry like Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill, and Janet Jackson. During her performance of the song at Gillette Stadium, she repeated Erykah Badu’s name four times, replacing both Lizzo and former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland.
Lizzo and Kelly Rowland’s names were still displayed on the screen behind the stage. See the fan-shot footage below.

Erykah Badu is dropping some severe shade in Beyoncé’s direction.
The neo-soul icon, 52, shot some shade at Queen Bey, 41, in her Instagram Story last weekend regarding a photo of Beyoncé performing in an oversized, metallic hat at her show in New Jersey.
“I guess I’m everyone’s stylist. favorite chrome mirror hat,” said Badu, as she added a side-by-side comparison shot of herself performing in a very similar oversized, metallic hat at a separate show during an unspecified date.

The shade feels even more strange, considering Bey gave Badu a friendly shout-out on her track “Break My Soul” last year, along with nods to Lauryn Hill, Roberta Flack, Kelly Rowland, and Lizzo.

Beyoncé’s back-to-back nights at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, this past weekend were two of the most star-studded shows of the Renaissance tour thus far. Greta Gerwig and America Ferrera watched the show from risers, while singer and songwriter Kehlani was close enough to the stage to snap a selfie with Beyoncé. Laverne Cox attended both nights and penned a heartfelt, revelatory caption about how the concert made her feel born again. Also in the audience was Madonna, who received a shoutout from one queen to another.

Erykah Badu re-wrote and re-recorded her hit song “Tyrone” for Netflix’s new movie “They Cloned Tyrone,” per a request from the film’s director Juel Taylor.
“Everybody I’ve ever talked to, as soon as I told them the [movie’s] title, they were like, ‘So Erykah Badu doing the song?’ and I’m like, ‘Trust me, I’m trying.’” Taylor said, describing the early stages of developing “They Cloned Tyrone,” which is his feature film directorial debut and stars Teyonah Parris, John Boyega and Jamie Foxx. At the time, he hoped he would be able to include a reimagined version of the Grammy-winner’s song.
“You don’t really think it’s going to happen,” Taylor said. “Serendipitously enough, I was able to pitch it to her, and she responded immediately. Thank God for Erykah Badu.”

Denzel Curry is the latest artist to participate in Spotify’s Live at Electric Lady series. The rapper visited the eponymous studio to record a seven-song set comprising tracks from his recent album Melt My Eyez See Your Future, throwing in a cover of the 2000 Erykah Badu song “Didn’t Cha Know.”
It’s not often we hear Curry sing, but his vocals do “Didn’t Cha Know” justice, and the cover even features a guest appearance from a Badu collaborator, the R&b singer Bilal. The EP’s opening track is another cover, this one a rendition of Shogun’s “Lonely Man” (from the Japanese TV series Detective Story).
Elsewhere on the EP is a previously-unreleased track called “Endtroduction” that layers Curry’s distinctive, playfully-aggressive flow over a bold jazzy instrumental. The final four tracks are cuts from Melt My Eyez See Your Future: “Walkin’,” “Troubles,” “Angels,” and “X-Wing.

Erykah Badu has a reminder for those who may have forgotten the true meaning of the word “woke.” In a recent interview with MSNBC, the artist discussed her thoughts on right-wing politicians who’ve turned the term into a pejorative, saying: “I think they mean ‘Black.'”
Although the origin of the phrase “stay woke” is widely credited to William Melvin Kelley’s 1962 essay If You’re Woke You Dig It, Badu played a huge role in bringing it to the mainstream with her 2008 track “Master Teacher.” Her use of the phrase on social media also contributed to its explosion in popularity: “I tweeted it about this group that was detained, Pussy Riot,” she explained to MSNBC’s Ari Melber, referring to the Russian protest art collective. “I said ‘free Pussy Riot’… After that, ‘woke’ took off.”
Melber then proceeded to show Badu a series of clips in which “stay woke” is used,...

It’s been a mere five months since Ice Spice went viral with “Munch (Feeling U),” a coldly efficient putdown of the opposite sex that earned her a million-dollar deal with the label 10K Projects. The Bronx rapper has generated headlines from gossip folks ever since. She was feted by Drake…or is that dissed by him on “BackOutsideBoyz”? She shook her goodies on TikTok in celebration of her 23rd birthday. She inspired a lame “Ice Spice” homage by Memphis rapper Nle Choppa, the cost of doing business in an...

Cody Jinks didn’t mention Austin by name in his 2010 song “Hippies and Cowboys,” but it’s easy to read one particular lyric as a subtle shot at the city and its evolution from outlaws and artists haven to a home for industry insiders and tech bros.
“I never been a part of any musical scenes,” Jinks, who is from just north of Fort Worth, sang. “I ain’t just talking Nashville/if you know what I mean.”

Beyoncé and Madonna have teamed up for a royal collaboration, “Break My Soul (The Queens Remix).” The latest remix of Beyoncé’s Renaissance single arrived on Friday, just in time to get the weekend party started.
The percolating remix interpolates Madonna’s “Vogue” with Beyoncé flipping the script for the iconic spoke-sung section of the 1990 song, where the Material Girl lists Hollywood stars from the Golden Age. In Bey’s take, she pays homage to both current and past influential Black women who have been game-changers for the culture — from Aaliyah,...

Exclusive: Dave Caplan’s directorial debut is a love letter and inspirational hip hop archive about The Doc, a master of the art who is more than likely your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper.
The film chronicles the life of the lyricist and producer who wrote for N.W.A and Dr. Dre, co-founded Death Row Records, mentored Snoop Dogg and left his mark on hip hop culture forever. Thirty years after a devastating car crash that took his voice, The Doc is still struggling with his legacy as a rapper with the greatest cadence before West Coast rap exploded in popularity and he considers surgery that might be able to restore his vocals. The Doc explores this risky decision alongside a cast of celebrities who reflect on his impact in their lives and in the world from music to love to civil rights crusading.

On a quiet side street in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood — a few short blocks from the Barclays Center, and right above a natural-hair salon — is the low-rise red-brick building where Erykah Badu has lived on and off since the mid-Nineties. Walk up to the second floor and follow the vintage funk beats down a narrow carpeted corridor, and you’ll find her place: a cozy two-bedroom artist’s pad that radiates warmth and soul. “You can sit over there,” says the singer, gesturing at a futon in one corner...

Underground rapper Jay Electronica signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, it was announced at an event in New York Friday night. Shortly after, Diddy tweeted “Damn it hurts in a whole other way when someone you felt and I mean really felt was your Friend, Betrays you. It hurts when Breathe” — which many, including Electronica, interpreted as a reaction to the signing. But Diddy later tweeted that he’s happy for the rapper and wasn’t referring to him or Jay-Z in the tweet.
