If you’ve seen a trailer for Salt, then it’s likely you know too much about this film. Though, even if you’ve somehow escaped the movie’s terrible trailer, Salt doesn’t give audiences very much to cheer for. With a cartoonish plot, an unsympathetic main character and overly convenient plot devices, Salt takes itself far too seriously. A spy movie without suspense is like a romantic comedy without a silly misunderstanding or a slasher film where a good-looking teen victim is merely punched in the nose. Without suspense, the entire film will just hobble down its lifeless path en route to a grave sin for the genre: a predictable ending.

Five years ago, the character Edwin A. Salt was a badass CIA agent in the vein of Jason Bourne or a new iteration of James Bond. Producers shopped the script — titled, predictably enough, "Edwin A. Salt" — to the studios, hoping to entice an A-list actor to sign up for some explosion-filled action. But they came up short.

Then, for awhile in 2007, Tom Cruise was circling the role, but still, the project never shifted into production. Eventually the team switched gears ... drastically.

Edwin became Evelyn, making way for Angelina Jolie to step into lead role, and the film was rechristened "Salt." Jolie's Salt is a CIA agent who goes on the run to clear her name after she's accused of being a Russian spy.

Is Angelina Jolie a Russian spy? An American spy posing as a Russian spy? A blond or a brunette? Extremely attractive or attractive in the extreme? In the new Salt trailer, the answer seems to be All of the Above.

When Kurt Wimmer’s (Equilibrium) script for Salt was originally picked up by Columbia Pictures, Tom Cruise was attached for the lead. However, scheduling conflicts or it’s resemblance to Mission: Impossible caused him to take a walk, leaving the role wide open for Angelina Jolie.

A few gender tweaks were all they needed to turn this Cold War thriller into an action vehicle for a strong woman. Having read the script, audiences are in for one hell of an awesome flick in July 2010.

If you recall, the espionage thriller Salt was at one time to be centered around a male lead and be titled Edwin A. Salt. That male lead was to be Tom Cruise. When he stepped out of the role, the male lead turned to female and in stepped Angelina Jolie. Goodbye Edwin A., hello Evelyn. This left us with only Salt, about a CIA operative on the run and out to clear her name from accusations of being a Russian spy involved in a plot to assassinate the President of the United States.

German filmmaker Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck, writer and director of The Lives of Others, which won the 2008 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, is in talks to direct The 28th Amendment, a long-gestating Warners project about conspiracy and intimidation at the White House. Amendment has been described as The Firm set in the White House; its premise is that for a good part of the 20th century, the president has been the puppet of a small, lethal gang that kills anyone who defies its wishes (JFK did and paid the price, according to one iteration of the script).
